I could only watch about 5 seconds of that version. 😅 This is definitely a breakup album. Maybe half of the songs are about other situations from the past, but half are about Joe, and several of the others are about an old flame that has reunited during this time period. I’m just going to go ahead and put it out there, it’s Matty Healy from The 1975. You will hear A LOT about the fallout of that situation on TTPD. We’ll never know if she actually cheated but as she says in Labyrinth, “oh no, I’m falling in love again.” Labyrinth is about her relationship with Joe being dead and immediately falling for someone else,” hmm hmm… Matty. She briefly dated Matty a decade ago, but it ended quickly in part due to his heroine addiction. She carried a flame for him the entire time. She confirmed on TTPD that Maroon is about him. It’s good to remember that Taylor is constantly writing, so these albums include songs that might span a few years. A lot of people describe TTPD as stages of grief, but I think that could be said for several of her albums. And the stages aren’t in order so it can give you a little whiplash when trying to figure out what’s going on. It’s honestly easiest when you get to the next album and then you look back at the previous one and you’re like, “oh, I see.” 😅

This basic "theme" of this album was the things that would keep her up at midnight, thinking about. Not a breakup album. Not a love album. It covers several types. So some of the songs are from before Joe. Things and relationships before him. I do think Joe was a safe and soft place for her. But he wasn't the sort to want to go out and have fun and live a vibrant life. He's more of a sort to want to stay home or maybe go to a play or orchestra concert. Her mind is very vibrant and she needs more zest in her life to be happy, I think.

Even though publicly they were together, it was dying a long slow death behind closed doors. I also think that the premise of the songs being about different sleepless nights throughout her life allowed her to explore and write about her current relationship under the guise of it possibly being about some other past relationship. She did the same thing with folklore, saying much of it was fiction but after TTPD there were a lot of clues that many songs which were supposedly fiction were not! You nailed it though that much of Midnights is Taylor in dgaf mode.

This whole album but especially Bejeweled really reveals a lot about where she was in her relationship with Joe, even though they had not said anything publicly or indicated any problem yet when the album came out. In hindsight there are so many clues and breadcrumbs all the way back to folklore and even lover (you have been so perceptive about that in your reactions)! Anyway, I think Bejeweled was that moment when she's sick of being sad all the time and hiding in private and being lonely and neglected by Joe and was like, I'm done with this shit time to shine again!

A couple future thoughts when you're through everything you want to consume....1) you mentioned it in this reaction, and it's something I've wondered/marveled at: the different KIND of voice/sound Taylor chooses to use. It could be fun to id songs across the albums that highlight that diversity. You're a singer - I'm not - how does one MAKE your voice shift like that? :-) 2. Again, once you're done, reviewing the albums in sequence - with all the Taylore you've learned, as well as you're own experience listening/relistening and wondering - what themes do you see, lyrically? What's the growth - in her voice, in production, in themes, lyricism. Because, yes, taylore is baked in... But what is it to simply *hah* think about the albums as text - independent from their history (Is that possible?) Just rambling...!

2025-08-25 20:39:30 +0000 UTCThis album again was released mostly when they were still together, but it’s not exactlyy a breakup album. It’s more specifically a breakdown album!! Like it’s like, they’ve been together so long and over time the hints and cracks were there obviously throughout the albums which we all see now, but this album in particularly really hits that spot of like, processing that the relationship is going to end and that reaches its peak when you get to the last vault track You’re Losing Me after the 3 AM edition!! It will really tie it all up together and yeah. The songs on Midnights can be interpreted in so many different ways but for me I think that not every song is about Joe, but you can think of them in a way that it connects.. The best way I find is to realize that she’s exploring her past relationships and what happened in them in these midnights throughout her life when she can’t sleep because she is so troubled by her current relationship with Joe and trying to figure out what went wrong by using her past experiences. But the main topics of songs such as Maroon, Midnight Rain, Question, etc. aren’t focused on Joe and we kinda knew that since the album dropped but speculation about who each is always kinda rotates and is debated depending on who you ask. I.E. I feel Question…? is definitely about Harry Styles because the 1989 vault tracks have strong correlations and add up to what we know about their relationship, not to mention it samples the first “I remember” you hear from a song ON 1989. Midnight Rain could be attributed to Hiddleston, or even someone from when she was much younger and still went to high school/in her hometown that she left behind for her career, could even not be about anyone in particular. Maroon I have heard and seen sooo many theories about who it could be. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter particularly but sometimes it does help, but definitely don’t think about those songs to be centered on the Joe relationship bc that kinda messed with the actual songs about him and it makes more sense to understand if those don’t get mixed up basically 😭 I mean that in the best way bc I’d love for you to fully fathom the feelings she has bc it really makes the songs have the best impact, at least imo, and I want you to enjoy that!! So happy to finally get to this album!! Super excited for you to do Speak Now Red and 1989 in particular also because those carry so much weight I feel in understanding songs on Midnights as well as the Taylor Cinematic Universe Taylore 😆😆

I don’t want to give away what she talks about but she explains how her songs can be categorized based on each song’s style of lyrics. I also think you would enjoy the NYU speech but I get that it’s a bit long. The one I’m suggesting is a bit shorter though so 🤷🏻♀️ just thought I’d suggest it because of how you mentioned feeling in this reaction going from songs like Labyrinth to Karma, etc.

As a queer woman, I forget to breathe every time I watch it (I promise, I am looking SO respectfully!! And I'm not a gaylor, just a gay person who's a huge fan of her art no matter who the muses are.) A third person. And Taylor is also jumping around in the timeline of her life. The Lore takes some serious unpacking. An important note: Joe & Taylor wrote Sweet Nothings *together* so ... just noodle on that. Also, I am *delighted* that you loved Snow on the Beach & appreciated Lana's contribution, because a lot of listeners couldn't hear the differences in their voices or feel Lana's contributions so much so that they complained about it until Taylor got Lana back in the studio to rerecord the song in a different way! I love the original. I can hear both Taylor & Lana separately & blended. But Lana stans we're pissed that Lana didn't have a verse of her own & said Taylor was hogging the spotlight & intimidated by Lana's voice. All thoroughly ridiculous. Taylor didn't have to add anyone to the track if she didn't want to & Lana thought the verses sounded better & belonged in Taylor's voice. Anyway, Taylor aims to please, so there's another version coming up. There's also another version of Karma with a feature. I think both versions are delightful.

She was in deep guilt because of her long time urning for a situationship with another while she was with Joe and (Super Hot Take) he wouldn't marry "a pathological people pleaser" BECAUSE he may have always thought that he was second best. Shit gets real when TTPD made us all aware that messy Tay while feeling Joe wasn't treating her the way she wanted...she wasn't 100% with him. When I hear Sweet Nothings I think its her self admitting that Joe was a good guy but just not the one for her and maybe some of his perpetual "blue" state was BECAUSE he knew he was not the one.

Don't forget to do You're Losing Me at the VERY END to wrap up the work. At first it was a track only available on the CDs sold at a specific Stadium on the Eras Tour. A YEAR later she released it on streaming, and not long after her and Joe's break up Jack Antonoff, aka Mr Messy 🤣, shared a pic of Taylor writing You're Losing Me and dropped the bomb that she wrote it in 2021...letting us know that her and Joe hadn't been ok for a while before the break up!
