Let's get this idea to Mr. Musk, he has lots of money and ambition! Maybe he can make it happen.
You are always in the draw as usual as patrons, but make sure to enter your name in the scope giveaway form as viewers too to increase your chances: https://goo.gl/forms/Hejod9Kr2XezOWCo1
And of course the 5 power supplies are only for patrons, so good luck!
Love the videos

Was thinking you could do something like wireless charging at lights. On the highway you could use the same coil on your electric car with magnetic fields spaced apart on the road to induce a charge on that coil while traveling on the highway to charge it while traveling.. maybe on a certain lane.. its 4 a.m. and just watched the video and the idea came to me.

How do I enter for the power supply?

True for battery production for current EV's, but with the very frequent recharging of a much smaller storage in Mehdi's idea (or even the use of capacitors instead of batteries) that would be mitigated to a large extent.
Funny how we demand that any solution to a problem be perfect, if it's not, then we're OK to go on using the very inefficient and destructive (in global and human terms) current systems.

prob is, electric cars do a lot of environmental damage and are filthy to make which offsets their "clean in use" credentials. Smelting the materials is a huge problem: <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/sustainable-business/2017/aug/24/nickel-mining-hidden-environmental-cost-electric-cars-batteries" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.theguardian.com/sustainable-business/2017/aug/24/nickel-mining-hidden-environmental-cost-electric-cars-batteries</a>

We will end with nuclear accidents instead of car ones.

That's a horrible excuse.

How long must we wait for “Star in a car?”(I’m talking self-sustaining fusion reactions here!) What kind of cost to development speed could we have if we threw petroleum level dollars at it?

Stop increasing the population? Start looking after the planet?
While economists and career politicians rule the planet that will never happen. It's all about greed, selfishness and power, that's the human way.
Nice video though.

I got scared at 12:58. Wasn't expecting that. Great video as always
2018-10-24 21:31:12 +0000 UTC
probably because it would be way more inefficient and unreliable than direct contact, and the charging would be too brief at highway speeds.

In his defense, he did include an option to skip his climate change rant by telling you what time to fast forward to.

I like how if you don't burn, break, or blow up anything yourself during the video, something just randomly explode without even touching it. You earn every youtube dollar you make. lol

I appreciate the bullshit scare tactics for most of the video. That's pretty awesome stuff right there. I enjoy the silly parodies like the free energy stuff, but not the "poison" gasoline baloney. Was fun being a patron while it lasted.

Out of curiosity, what would be wrong with NFC pads spaced periodically (say every 100 meters) that send a short pulse of charge to the super cap? Gas cars could drive in the same lane and the charge would only occur when the pad is activated.
2018-10-24 16:18:04 +0000 UTC
Give me da... something 😁
By the way, idea with electric route is interesting. Like electric train line. But electric cables under highway will be dangerous, this system must be hidden under route...
2018-10-24 16:08:48 +0000 UTC
Why not just add charging for the entire length of the highway? And for all lanes?
Turing Eret
2018-10-24 14:57:35 +0000 UTC
That's right, but running at fixed speed for 1 km only takes a little extra power, like maybe 1/20 of the charge you will receive. Shouldn't be too hard to compensate for that.

2018-10-24 14:53:51 +0000 UTC
Isn't the 1 minute of charging = 10 km thing for when you're standing still?
So you would have to compensate for the energy used while it is charging.

(rough figures from my research)
Telsa: 20.09 kWh/100 km
So for infinite range at 100km/hour you need 20.09kW
However every two hours you should stop for 15 minutes (<a href="https://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Safety/Driver-guide/Driving-safely/Driving-tired.aspx)" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Safety/Driver-guide/Driving-safely/Driving-tired.aspx)</a>
So Every two hours you actually need 35.1575kWh (or 17.57875kW)
<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online_Electric_Vehicle" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online_Electric_Vehicle</a> Has 17kW of power draw. (Just a system that I have no idea about how good it is.
Over 10 hours that means you will only take 6kWh out of the battery. This sounds like it could be doable. (With no worries about hitting your conductors on low bridges)

I love the idea but I can't help thinking in the real world whatever can go wrong will go wrong as you so elegantly demonstrated in your video. I do however think the idea of a battery cell exchange station along the road sides could actually work once all the dangers are worked out of the system and people where trained up to do the work. Could even lead to competition in cell tech regarding durability and capacity and such.
2018-10-24 10:21:10 +0000 UTC
i guess it has to be called "electronic castration"
2018-10-24 10:13:01 +0000 UTC
I'm 24 and have no kids at all. Mehdi, please, i do not want to overpopulate the planet, give me the scope!
2018-10-24 10:12:13 +0000 UTC
How about having "gas stations" where you just put your empty battery cell and pick up a fresh charged one? no need for changes in the infrastructure. The stations would charge the cells 24/7, they would just have to have enough charged ones for everyone.
2018-10-24 08:20:59 +0000 UTC
And I definitely need one of those power supplies I'm divorced with just one child so surely I meet most of the criteria haha 😂

I always thought wireless charging would be a good idea at some stage where you drive into a multi-storey car park and it fast charges while you're in there........might be a few issues though, especially if you have a pacemaker 😳

Hi Mehdi, great episode as always. Yes, there are so many great possibilities for electric technology, especially with transport. Here in Uk we are slowly starting to see a rise in uptake for them. I think your idea is cool. I watched thus thought you might find it interesting <a href="https://youtu.be/2t0E4AcVu6o" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://youtu.be/2t0E4AcVu6o</a> its about some ideas they are trying over in France with inductance charging...looks like a lot of the interesting stuff is coming from france. I really hope electric tech comes in for cars in a good way, and the price is made for everyone. Done in the right way ie not for massive profit, it could change so much, giving folks a better understanding of energy and how and when to use it which is good for everyone. Thanks again for cool episode, Ian

I'm an EE and I still managed to find a mate. Pure luck I guess.... No she's not blind! ;-) Couldn't agree more one the 1-2 kids/family way to decrease the population over time. Got two lovely kid myself and very happy with that. Would, of course, be even more happy if I had a scope to use when teaching them electronics ;-)

We are doing more or less this with a 100 public transportation buses at my work (in the Netherlands). Special battery technology that allows extreme quick charging without the need of balancing cells. It aren't super capacitors, but they behave more or less the same. Charging at around 700 Volt, 650 Amperes it provides opportunity charging at multiple locations around the routes (so no charging while driving). At this moment we have a 100 buses with this technology and are expanding to over 300 in the near future, making this PT area's fleet fully electric. The upcoming new vehicles will have even better battery technology, more capacity and even faster charging (600KW). We are also experimenting with hydrogen and fuelcells to charge batteries and super caps during driving. Even in our Arnhem region we are doing test with exactly what you describe at 9:36 with our current trolley (electric by wire) busses. Charging them by the over-head wires allowing them to leave the city and come back on battery charges.

So why do we have to have the wiper in the roof of the tunnel, could it not be in the road way? This really could work. Maybe some form of induction charging, even if it had to be a longer stretch?

Please sir, can I have a scope, for my son, his name is mason, he is 11 and wants to learn. but we as a family cannot justify the expense for a scope thank you and Yes sir this is A deliberate heart string tug. Is it going to work? ☺️

That's a good idea too. I thought about it a while back. You would need some sort of crane at the station to replace these as they are so heavy. And batteries for all cars should be the same form, at least for the same range cars. It might be hard to have all companies to comply to the same form factor. May be we can break batteries to smaller cells that are easier replaceable.

In a couple of the warehouses where I've worked in the past our fork trucks and the bigger turret trucks had a battery swap station. When you started to slow down you just pull in and swap out the battery in a couple minutes. It could be just like a propane exchange program but for electric cars.
