Doctor Who S2 Episodes 3+4! (Patreon Exclusive)

And we're back at it with the emotional episodes. In this video I'm reacting to the episodes "School Reunion" and "The Girl in the Fireplace".

Doctor Who S2 Episodes 3+4! (Patreon Exclusive)

Comments

Yeah, this entire era of the Doctor just bums me out. No smiles, just feels. :| Nice to watch them with someone who's seeing them for the first time, don't feel quite as emotionally vulnerable that way.

Dinker

These two episodes feel so bittersweet. We get some great moments seeing Sarah Jane and she makes me so happy. But I also feel bad for what she's gone through. And then Reinette, the first time I watched this episode I didn't like it because I didn't like that they brought in this character to have a random romance with the doctor, but i found I liked it much better this time and it made me quite sad (it's been about 15 years since I've watched this episode) really enjoyed this reaction and im so excited to keep rewatching doctor who with you.

Pixiedanni15

the fact that morgan didn't immediately go GILES! makes me assume they haven't watched Buffy

Elisa H.

Drunk Doctor = Crowley for sure!

Rhi

Sarah jane smith one of the best companions . Icon legend she is mother. Aww i miss her

The Baker's Ruview

I completely forgot that Anthony Head was in this series! Most know him as Giles from Buffy, but I loved him in Repo: The Genetic Opera! Dude can sing! (I say as remembering the horrific screeching he does in School Reunion).😂👼

ASBOs were abolished in 2014, thankfully

Verdigree

“Happy Slapping” was a thing people were having a moral panic about at the time, which was kids in school slapping each other for fun. An ASBO is an Anti-Social Behaviour Order, in this context it’s mostly used like a cout ordered probation for children over 10 who “demonstrate anti-social behaviour” with a very broad definition lumping together things like spitting in public, graffiti, loitering, begging, and serious crimes

Verdigree

Fun fact, David and the actress who plays Reinette (Sophia Myles) actually started dating after filming this episode. So the chemistry you see between them is 100% real. They were in a relationship for two years. It was after they broke up that he met Georgia ❤️

Melanie Voight

"Stupid show! Stupid emotions!" - i relate so much! That's my relationship with Doctor Who in a nutshell. I cried SO much for this show over all the seasons. ... 🥺♥️

mari.healingbikes

Love watching you react to Doctor Who! It’s one of my most favorite live action shows! I would recommend watching Doctor Who Confidential, it’s basically a series where you get to see all the behind the scene stuff for the show

SPIKELB!

Oh yeah that's the line. I was going off off memory, so thx.

By the way, Sarah Jane was introduced in the third Doctor's last season and she left a few seasons (i don't remember how many exactly) into the fourth doctor's run K9 meanwhile, was originally built by someone else and the 4th Doctor took one look at him was essentially like "omg metal puppy!!!! i need him!!!" and basically just..... took him

Willow 404

i think the exact line was "Have you met Miss Smith? she's my best friend" but same vibe lolol. it's one of my favorite scenes from their era together

Willow 404

Happy New Year! The clockwork robots was another episode that I remember scared everyone when we were kids, they were definitely creepy! :D Also yeah here in the UK, it depends where you are, some places have a middle school, but some you go straight to high school from when you're 11, that's what I did :)

Steven Moffat is one of my favorite writers in Doctor Who, he's really good with the science fiction horror mix. The dialogue in his episodes are always very witty and funny as well He's got some more coming up that are really good too.

Matthew

Steven Moffat's episodes are always a gem of their time. Even before he became the showrunner with the 11th Doctor's era.

One of my fav improvs was from the Fouth Doctor in I believe ,,Pyramids of Mars" - correct me if I'm wrong - He was introducing himself and Sarah to some people they just met saying: ,,This is Sarah Jane Smith. See Miss. Smith is my best friend." - Tom Baker improvized that scene, not just because he thought that it fit the Doctor's character (which it really did), but because that is how he himself felt and tought about Liz. That one line describes their relationship PERFECTLY (no matter what face the Doctor is wearing).

Thecnically the First Doctor ,,died" of old age... And then regenerated. But back then the intire regeneration concept was in its very early infancy.

Really enjoy watching you react to these. :) Dr Who excels at using good writing and acting to do what their budget couldn't always do. Making you scared of a child in a gas mask. Making you cry over a robot dog. Making a porcalain/clockwork mask intimidating, and making you feel tragedy over a historical figure centuries past. The Doctor can be a very tragic figure, and you're following the same kind of roller coaster we were watching it as it came out. I like watching movies with other people for their first time for the same reasons, and I look forward to what you think of the upcoming episodes... Keep up the good work! :)

Tintros

Never seen a rimelord die of old age but we have met timelords who lived into tens of thousands

demonic-myst

Asbos is anti social bejavior order its a ceiminal sentence for social cdimes like loud music or intimidation

demonic-myst

Oh no! I think you missed a joke! When Rose said "you're not keeping the horse," the Doctor replied "I let you keep Mickey!"

Thaniel Grey

I swear, I remember the Doctor saying "there could be anything on this ship! *pauses, sees the horse,* For example... a horse." I thought that was really funny, and I was waiting for it, and then it didn't happen!

Thaniel Grey

Have you seen any of Anthony Head as Frank N Furter?!

Thaniel Grey

Also: "Hoodies" means teenagers who perpetually have their hoods up to hide their faces, and are usually up to no good. "Happy Slapping" was a thing in the early days of phones with cameras, where gangs of hoodies would record themselves running up to a person, "slapping" them (or knocking them over), and then running away laughing. It was a very strange phenomenon of generating evidence of their assaults... Idiots...

Thaniel Grey

K-9 dying: I'm like a rock, no tears🪨. Reinette dying: waterfall of tears😭 It's a bittersweet episode, "The Girl In The Fireplace." I love it, tho, the "clock-men" scared the sh*t outta me when I first watched this show as a pre-teen. Made me terrified of ticking clocks. But I absolutely loved your reaction to these episodes. Can't wait for the next ones😁

Julie Moum

As someone who watched Modern Who first, I cannot accurately describe the absolute joy I felt when I reached Sarah Jane's first episode in my watch of Classic Who. I also just recently reached the episode where K9 was introduced and my jaw hurt from smiling so much

Willow 404

And one other interesting thing about Sarah Jane: Usually the Doctor's companions either die a heroic (or secrifical) death in an adventure or they themself decide to leave on their own accords. Sarah was the only one (minus Susan, but she was/is (?) family) who the Doctor ,,forgot" on Earth. This is how much he cared for her. He left her on the safest place - that isn't at his side - back home, because he knew the dangers of his own people.

School Reunion - "Seriously, without you guys..." you'd still be on the night shift at Lowes :(, a fate worse than death. - It's Anthony Head! Known for playing a saucy guy in some tea commercials, and for being Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I love his reassuring voice and svelte movements. - The skit you are thinking of is called "David Tennant is Catherine Tate's new English teacher! | Comic Relief - BBC" on Youtube. - Whilst we do have some middle schools, our usual high school is for ages 11-16, with the better ones offering 11-18. - Dinner Ladies (or what you'd call canteen staff) are a weird British thing we encounter as kids. They're all so similar and off-putting and maladjusted. A diminished form of the creepy scary boarding-school Matron you see in movies. - "happy-slapping hoodies with ASBOs and ringtones" - the Doctor is conjuring lurid images of the worst of youth (chavs). Happy-slapping is the practice of filming yourself going up to a stranger and hitting them. Hoodies are delinquents characterised by the hooded tops they wear to hide their face (pretty sure the US has a similar stereotype but with stronger racist connotations?). ASBOs are "anti-social behaviour orders", a legal punishment you could get if you were too young to be sent to jail. And ringtones, prior to smartphones the most we could do was show each other the latest ringtone we'd downloaded for our flip phones by playing them at full volume. - You put Sarah-Jane's identity together pretty fast! - "The Doctor's such a tragic character *buries face in hands and cries*." - Now you're getting it :) The Girl in the Fireplace - "by Steven Moffat" - the same person who did Inside Man and the "Are you my mommy?" 2 parter. Keep an eye on who the episode is credited to and you'll start noticing personal styles and patterns. - "that word" - yes, we're trying to phase it out. - You know from Rose and Mickey's point of view, due to the time dilation the Doctor span the fireplace and it never stopped. Span right the way round 360 degrees only he came back out wrestling with a clockwork Frenchman. - "Oh I get it. Camilla." - Camilla Parker-Bowles was the mistress of our current King, and now his wife. - I love how smart the dialogue is, even minor lines: "I will not set foot in your world" *brandishes blade* "We do not require your feet." - "I'm always alright."  - because it's happened so many times to him.

Basically what Morgan has over David every time he is on screne.

Oh yeah, there's another spin-off show from Doctor Who called 'The Sarah-Jane Adventures'...featuring...well, you can probably guess as the main character, which is kinda the complete opposite of the other spin-off Torchwood. While Torchwood is the more dark and gritty side to the Doctor Who universe, Sarah-Jane Adventures is the more lighthearted version...even if it does have its dark moments. The tone of Doctor Who is somewhere in the middle. Still appropriate for younger audiences, but also really scary and dark at times. Sadly the Sarah-Jane Adventures show got cancelled halfway through its fourth season because Elisabeth Sladen, the actress who played Sarah-Jane Smith, passed away.

Loving your reactions and i hope you continue the series even after tenants run, bc there is a great special with him and matt smith and there is a great callback episode, to the madame de pompadour, during capaldis run! also tenant, smith and capaldi are my favourites bc between the 3 of them thy capture the different facettes of the doctor so well!

Dieter Hornach

I don't know if you want to watch the whole show or mainly the episodes and seasons with Tennant as the doctor. I only watched mainly the DT seasons and the specials with him in it and have to say, that it's not bad. You'll understand most of it none the less. So either way, I'm looking forward to all episodes you will react to. Gives me the chance to watch this show again, since in my country there is no plattform to watch it on. Loving your reactions and can't wait for you to get to the more "serious" episodes <3

Awzrael

Thank you for being here.

NOW I know why I completely forgot about "Tooth and Claw". Because the two following episodes were SO GREAT!!!

Chloe Small

Loved seeing Sarah Jane again! I watched Doctor Who when I was a kid and there was an episode that was so scary to child-me that I stopped watching the show for long while. But I loved that universe so much, and so there was a spin-off show called The Sarah Jane Adventures, about her (and others) keeping Earth safe that was a bit more kid-friendly, so for a time I watched that instead. Seeing her brings back so many memories, I loved her so much 😭

Freya Murphy

as other people have said, sarah jane smith was a companion to the 3rd and 4th doctors (jon pertwee and tom baker) in classic who, and is an iconic doctor who character to people who grew up watching the show in the 70s. in 2007 (a year and a bit after the season you're watching now) she got a spinoff show called "the sarah jane adventures" which was aimed at a younger audience and has her fighting aliens alongside her adopted son luke and his teenage friends. this meant that she was also an iconic character for my generation as well as my parents' generation! the sarah jane adventures characters get referenced a couple of times near the end of series 4, so i guess just knowing the spinoff exists will help that make a little bit of sense. i assume you aren't going to watch the spinoff shows because you're watching this for david tennant, but there is one sarah jane adventures story that stars david tennant if you're interested - "the wedding of sarah jane smith" (s3 e5-6), which takes place after series 4 of doctor who, during the 2008-2010 specials (specifically between "planet of the dead" and "the waters of mars").

Luke

Btw high school in the UK is from age 11 to 16 (some go to 18) so that kid was about the right age for high school. And They are CHIPS not FRIES 🤣🤣🤣 an ASBO is an anti social behaviour order, basically a punishment from the police for kids that do crimes or are generally just nuisances to the community. But can't be arrested because they are minors, things like shoplifting, vandalising or terrifying old people (stuff kids do when they are bored)

Luke Teasdale

Seeing Giles (from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) as a straight-up villain is so weird. Like, he isn't even cursed or anything; he's just the bad guy - he plays it well, though.

Sarah H

Basically Sarah Jane and the Doctor was in the Classic era as to what Rose and the Doctor are in NewWho.

From David Tennant's foreword to Elizabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane)'s autobiography back in 2011: "...If Sarah was here, there was nothing to worry about. Later that afternoon she would be calling me Doctor. The little eight-year-old in my head (who was frankly reeling at the fact that I was in that room at all) was soothed, and of course thrilled, that the Doctor's one true assistant was there to look out for him. (...) Those scenes in the episode 'School Reunion' where the Doctor sees Sarah again after all that time were some of the most thrilling I had on Doctor Who. It was the realisation of a childhood fantasy I never imagined I would entertain. It could only have been with Elisabeth. It was always the Doctor and Sarah." It is an absolutely moving and beautiful piece or writing. I posted the full text on discord as I don't know if I can copy it all here or it's too long for the comments section 😅

mari.healingbikes

Sarah Jane being there was so meaningful to David because he grew up watching her.

T0m4002

Definitely!! That scene feels so true because David admired Elizabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane) so much, it was basically fanboy energy ✨♥️

mari.healingbikes

Fun fact about School Reunion: Sarah Jane Smith met the Third Doctor (played by Jon Pertwee) saw him regenerate and then travelled with the Fourth Doctor (played by Tom Baker). Because Tom played the Doctor for the longest time any actor has ever played the character (7 years to be exact), the Doctor and Sarah were THE Doctor and companion duo in the late 70s - when David grew up and watched Doctor Who a a child. So him getting to act (him being the Doctor non the less) alongside his childhood hero really brought out his personal child in many scenes. We still miss you Liz so much.

LikeCat

i feel like the reaction to sarah jane from the doctor when he sees her is just david tennant's reaction to liz sladen. like he's just starstruck to see her it's so sweet :)

Luke

Sarah Jane Smith and frankly, we still miss her. If there was ever a person who should have lived to see the show’s 50th anniversary, it was Elisabeth Sladen. Her and Nicholas Courtney. David Tennant has always said this was one of his favourite episodes, because Sarah was the companion when he started watching the show, so to work with Liz was a dream come true for him.
