Hi, This is muchi.

In a previous post I wrote about the recent spike in bear attacks in Japan, and now there’s been a new development: police officers are now allowed to carry rifles specifically for bear culling. In a country where even carrying a kitchen knife in public is tightly restricted, this is a huge change—and shows just how serious the situation has become. I really hope it helps reduce the number of incidents, even a little.

Bears are an obvious danger, but there are plenty of other dangerous creatures out there, and I’m sure they differ a lot from country to country. Japan doesn’t have many large wild animals, but in the mountains you’ll find a venomous snake called the mamushi spread pretty widely, and it reportedly kills a few people every year. Then there are hornets and venomous spiders. A lot of our “scary animals” are the poisonous kind. In the countryside, kids are often warned about those two from a very young age.🐍🕷️🐝

It makes me curious what it’s like in other countries—I’d love to hear what kinds of dangerous creatures you all have to watch out for where you live.
