One thing I appreciate much more about these movies as I'm older is how they show how sports are held to a different standard than literally anything else. Not to mention the overarching message that people shouldn't be put in boxes and expected to do just one thing their entire lives. We are complex and multifaceted and we like several different things. But for the captain of the basketball team to do musical theatre, especially back in 2006, in their eyes it emasculated him because it was/is considered "feminine" and "gay". So contrary to what people might believe, it really has nothing to do with him not being focused or not being a good friend. THEY were being bad friends and extremely narrowminded. Fun facts: The idea for the movie came in 1999, which was originally titled "Grease 3" (a sequel to the first one) and was supposed to star Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake as the children of Danny and Sandy. The plot was virtually the same as HSM but with more similarities to Grease. Sharpay was supposed to be Rizzo's daughter (producers tried to get Christina Aguilera for the part but she declined). Justin Timberlake's band mates from NSYNC were supposed to have supporting roles and John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John to possibly have cameos. The project eventually became High School Musical and not related to Grease at all. Zac Efron didn't sing in the first movie, at least not for the most part. Before he was cast, the role of Troy was written for a tenor, and he who himself is a baritone could not properly sing most of the parts. Singer-songwriter and actor Drew Seeley, who also auditioned for the role and co-wrote "Get'cha Head in the Game", provided majority of the character's singing voice, with Zac singing the first and last few lines in Start of Something New, the beginning of Breaking Free and during the scene on the balcony. However, Zac did all of his own singing in the sequels, since all the music in those had been tailored specifically for his voice. They also went on tour in North America and Latin America in 2006-2007 (after the first movie) and Zac would have joined if he had not been busy filming Hairspray (which he sang in), so Drew filled in for him. Zac and Vanessa Hudgens (Gabriella) were partnered up during the auditioning process due to their chemistry. No surprise since they dated for 4 years, from 2006-2010. Lucas Grabeel (Ryan) originally auditioned to play Troy while Ashley Tisdale (Sharpay) and Monique Coleman (Taylor) originally auditioned to play Gabriella. Monique almost quit acting right before she booked the role. At the callback, Lucas and Ashley auditioned together. They did not get along but now they are close friends. Lastly, Naya Rivera, who went on to play Santana Lopez on Glee, also auditioned for the role of Gabriella. Kenny Ortega, who directed the movies, was supposed to direct and choreograph Michael Jackson's This Is It concert tour, before MJ died in 2009. Kenny ended up directing the concert movie which was put together from rehearsal footage. He also served as the director of his memorial. Through Kenny, Michael actually called Zac Efron to tell him he enjoyed his work in HSM. Zac broke out in tears during the call. He's told the story in a couple of interviews, including Graham Norton Show: https://youtu.be/kGOD270UO2E?si=LbI4jh9RKaMcDpXO and Queen Latifah's talk show: https://youtu.be/jO2HEVc5iK4?si=yrrlscwIPOmZtsag. The movie is filmed in Salt Lake City, Utah. The school used in the movie is actually called East High School. There are HSM tours every week day. Corbin Bleu came up with the catchy and funny T-shirt phrases that Chad wore in the movie. He also chose Chad's basketball jersey number (he picked No. 8 because it's his favorite number). Troy's red and white shirt appears in all three movies. In the US, the premiere generated 7.7 million viewers, breaking the then-record for the highest premiere for Disney Channel. The movie won two Emmy Awards; for Outstanding Choreography and Oustanding Children's Program. The soundtrack was the best selling album of 2006, with 3.7 million copies sold in the US and 7 million worldwide. It was also the first-ever TV movie soundtrack to hit #1 on the Billboard Top 200, with a few songs charting on the Billboard Hot 100. In addition, they took home a Billboard Music Award. HSM has also had several stage productions, mostly school productions. Choreographer Charles Kaplow appears as a basketball player (he is in almost every dance number in all 3 movies). The cast: Before HSM, Zac Efron had a few small parts on shows like Firefly, Summerland, CSI: Miami and ER. He has starred in a lot of movies since, including the musicals Hairspray and The Greatest Showman, 17 Again (where he plays a younger version of Matthew Perry's character aka Chandler from Friends), Me and Orson Welles, Charlie St. Cloud, The Lucky One, New Year's Eve, The Paperboy, Neighbors, Dirty Grandpa, Baywatch, Extremely Wicked Shockingly Evil and Vile (in which he plays serial killer Ted Bundy) and The Iron Claw (in which he plays former pro wrestler Kevin Von Erich). Additionally, he received a Daytime Emmy Award in 2021 as outstanding daytime program host for the Netflix travel docuseries Down to Earth with Zac Efron. Zac sought treatment in early 2013 for substance abuse and has been sober since June of that year. He has also opened up about his struggles with insomnia, agoraphobia and depression. In Nov 2013, Zac had to have his jaw wired shut after breaking it in a fall at home. He had to stop physical therapy while he was filming in Australia and, as a result, certain muscles in his face became enlarged as they compensated for the other muscles that were still recovering from the injury. It is responsible for his apparent facial swelling in the last few years. In Dec 2019, he contracted a serious and potentially life-threatening illness (a form of typhoid or similar bacterial infection), ironically while filming his adventure series Killing Zac Efron in Papua New Guinea. He fully recovered. Zac moved to Australia after selling his home in LA in early 2021. Vanessa Hudgens has performed on Broadway in the 2015 revival production of Gigi and has been in two live TV musical adaptations — Rizzo in Grease: Live and Maureen in Rent: Live. She has starred in movies such as Bandslam, Beastly (a modern remake of Beauty and the Beast), Gimme Shelter (such an underrated movie and she is SO good in it), Frozen Ground, Journey 2: Mysterious Island, Netflix Christmas movie franshise The Princess Switch and The Knight Before Christmas, as well as the musical Tick, Tick... Boom!  with Andrew Garfield. She has also released two albums. After Vanessa and Zac broke up, she dated actor Austin Butler, who played Elvis in the 2022 movie, from 2011 to 2020. Ashley Tisdale actually introduced them after Austin starred with her in HSM spin-off Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure. Now, she is married to MLB player Cole Tucker and they just had their first child. Before HSM, Ashley Tisdale had already been acting on The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and voiced Candance Flynn on Disney Channel's Phineas and Ferb from 2007-2015. She starred on the 2010 teen cheerleader series Hellcats, Netflix holiday series Merry Happy Whatever and CBS' Carol's Second Act. She also had small roles on Sons of Anarchy and Scary Movie 5. She has released three albums and launched her own beauty brand, Illuminate cosmetics. In 2014, she married musician Christopher French. They welcomed their first child in March 2021 and she’s pregnant with baby #2. Before HSM, Lucas Grabeel (Ryan) starred in Halloweentown High. After HSM, he starred in Freeform's Switched at Birth and has voiced characters on shows like Family Guy, Pinky Malinky and Elena of Avalor. He also starred in a 2018 remake of Little Women with Bart Johnson (Coach Bolton) and appeared on the Disney+ show High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, playing a fictional version of himself. In the first episode of the fourth and final season, Ryan was confirmed to be gay. Corbin Bleu (Chad) played the lead role in DCOM Jump In. He went on to star in a number of Broadway productions: In the Heights, Godspell, Holiday Inn and the 2019 revival of Kiss Me, Kate. He competed on Dancing with the Stars in 2013, where he placed second. In December 2021, he reunited with his HSM costar Monique Coleman for a Lifetime Christmas movie, A Christmas Dance Reunion. He married his longtime girlfriend in July 2016. Monique Coleman (Taylor) also competed on Dancing with the Stars in 2006 and came in fourth place. She's done some acting since HSM (like the Christmas movie with Corbin) but her most important work is her advocacy. She founded Gimme Mo, an organization that seeks to empower youth to make changes in the world and starred in a talk show of the same name that aired on Discovery Life in 2018. In 2010 she was named the UN's first ever Youth Champion. She married in 2012. Before HSM, Olesya Rulin (Kelsi) made appearances in other DCOM movies like The Proof Point and Halloweentown High. After HSM, she apppeared on shows like The Mentalist, CSI: Miami, NCIS, Greek, Family Guy and PlayStation Network's Powers and SEAL Team. Also, in 2018, she starred in the TV movie Devious Nanny. She married in 2021 and has a daughter. Kaycee Stroh (Martha) has mostly taken a step back away from the spotlight. She married in 2009 and has two daughters. Before HSM, Alyson Reed (Ms. Darbus) was a Broadway star and was nominated for a Tony for her role in the 1987 revival of Cabaret. She also starred in the movie adaptation of A Chorus Line. Bart Johnson (Coach Bolton) has appeared on shows such as The Client List, Hyperion Bay, Hawaii Five-0, CSI: Miami, Diagnosis Murder, Sunset Beach and Strong Medicine. He is married to actress Robyn Lively, who is Blake Lively's sister.

Oh my god, please do High School Musical 2. I am begging. Everything you love about the first one will be magnified x 10. It's the best one of the trilogy. 🙏🙏🙏

thank u next

I hope you will finish this triology! I loved your reactions and seeing this now, i still love these films. They came out when i was in high school? We call it different in my country, but i think its the same age. These were so populair and loved (still are). It gives me the nostalgic feeling i also have with alot of animations. I agree with what you said. The message is really good and especially at that age where you go to those changes and discovering your individuality. Very romantic but in the sweet and more honest way.

Hoping HSM2 gets a chance in the future to carry it on :D
