Reasonably light episode. Simple enough story. Hear you on the anxiety of a returning character from way back when going unrecognized. An anxiety made worse if characters are Darrined for whatever reason. In this scenario, you end up good with Loretta as Missouri, who it has been some time since she was on the show. Good to see the boys were happy to hear from her. Sadly, she is killed in this episode, and it gets me seeing you saddened by that. She did have one badass last stand. Sort of like when Smith went to assimilate the Oracle, had a similar vibe. Good look into her son and granddaughter. You get where her son was coming from, even if you may not agree. Do love him coming through with the divination. Always a pleasure to see Jody. Love the little yelp of joy seeing Kim’s name in the credits. Leads to one VERY rude vision where they tried to sell that it was curtains for her. See, I didn’t think vision right away, though I knew she wasn’t dying. Because it’s still Kim playing Jody, and this is far from a worthy death for her, and you know goddamn well that if this was real, Kim would have walked. Plus, the stab wound looked treatable, much though the vision sold it as fatal. Even so, knew your scream and insistence that Jody would be fine was coming. We share knowing for sure that it was a vision when Dean had the repeated stabs. One, though he has died before, you know it’s not sticking here. Two, those wounds, though not impossible to survive, realistically would put a man out of commission for quite some time, and it’s too early in the season to do that, especially with the emotional crux of it. Bad guy is killed with the great assist from Patience. You take Dean’s point and projection as to why Patience should accept normalcy. We both loved Jody saying that the choice is up to Patience, and her alone. Probably the emotional high point of the reaction, Jess. And yes, Jody has the door open for another young lady. One more, and she gets a free set of steak knives. Now to Jack. Your point of Jack needing to be supervised not being entirely being done out of the kindness of your heart, I take what you meant. There are two truths: You do express that Jack needs looking after out of kindness, and that yeah, he is potentially a proverbial powder keg, so there is the measure of pragmatism. Sam is very sweet trying to coach Sam. Even buying the parenting book, which, to be fair, I think I’d do the same thing. Feel on a VERY strong level Sam’s line of saying that he’s helping Jack because he knows what it feels like to feel like you don’t belong. To be afraid of the darkness inside and fear who you are and what you can do. A rather intimately familiar feeling. Leads to the big yelling scene at the end. To Dean’s defense, when Sam inquires about Dean saying that he’d kill Jack, Dean does have a momentary contrite look and truthfully notes he didn’t say that QUITE as black-and-white as Jack said. A small moment that showcases how you say, when Dean is in the bad state that he’s in, where hope is too terrifying, he zig-zags between apathy and rage. Massive kudos to Sam for calling out Dean’s hypocrisy of condemning Jack, when Dean vehemently refused to condemn Sam. And Dean on some level realizes this, hence his weak defense of it being different with no further elaboration. Hurts when Dean’s rage boils over and Sam just lets it happen. Worse for Jack who hears it all. Particularly that part of Dean accusing Sam of wanting to use Jack to get their mom back, and Sam never really denies it, though you and I do believe that Sam really does care for the boy and wants to help him. The situation: cautiously optimistic is a fair description. Leading to the big final scene with Castiel, great reaction there. And for once, they learned and did NOT have Misha’s name in the opening credits. Alas, Crowley is dead, though it seems that death was not the end for Castiel. Shared feelings of being Sergeant Schultz, saying, “I know NOTHING.” about any logistics of the ending, or even what the fuck sort of Lynchian looking land that Castiel is in. But that’s for next week, I guess. Thanks for the reaction, Jess.
