Here's another little synth-y playtime jam, and another portal. I figured out a neat alpha masking trick with the shader nodes in Blender a couple of days ago--the parts of the portal that aren't orange and swirly are entirely transparent. And I think that's neat. I started over on the portal pictured because I couldn't figure out how to get the texture animation to lose the exaggerated easing in/out without changing the default interpolation mode about it before adding any shader-specific ke...

Oh my, in all of my full-bore art-making this summer, I had forgotten to share the final video we made for our kickstarter/album promotion. I spent many long nights learning how to UV unwrap a skateboard and getting the legs of my model to stop clipping through the boots. It's been a long time since I have animated something so complex, but it was once a passion of mine. Every sticky note pad I could get my hands on was turned into a moving picture. Stop motion paper craft and timelapses came...

Hello my friends. It's been such a crazy year, and I have barely taken time to stop and review and just bear witness to it all. I am crashing into nesting season now, just unpacking all of the overwhelm, and I hope everyone is having a sweet Fall.
I've got my desktop computer set up again, so the past couple of weeks between working and moving have been a fun reunion with some of the software I was playing with in the Spring, when my laptop was in better shape. I started using Bl...

We laid the last track for the album this week (it needed a re-do). Officially down to the straight up mixing stage, and the tracks are sounding really good. I can't wait to share them with y'all. We'll be running a kickstarter during the month of July in hopes to cover some of the costs of getting a CD & artbook/zine insert printed, paying our wonderful audio collaborators, and travel for our tour (we will be in Juneau, Ketchikan, Anchorage, and Talkeetna in August--more details to come ...

I've been plugging along pretty steadily on all of my projects this month. Yesterday I did this little digital painting of Ester Dome for a social media graphic I committed myself to making for a solstice show we're doing up there in June. It made me miss real paint, but I am slowly getting the hang of the digital stuff. It's pretty wicked versatile. Every time I just doodle around I find some new way to use a brush, or a filter. This one has a posterize filter and an edge detection ...

I was supposed to track some guitar yesterday, but one thing led to another and Sara ended up coming by and we worked on this new song instead. The working title has been "The Kid's Album."
This is the first rough take. It's hard to hear the lyrics, but they are:
Hey- we’ll talk after the show
I’m kinda busy pressing buttons with my feet right now
But I see you bobbing in the front row
And I’d kind of like to know what’s going on in your soul<...

just one more song to go to rework and tinker on to find that album version
This is our last practice recording of lilac. If you've been following the genesis of this song, you'll notice it's changed a lot. The last big move we made was changing the chords for the verse, and I wrote a solo that is kicking my ass. I've been practicing it a lot though and I can aaalllmost play it with my eyes closed now. Tracking guitar for this one 2nite.

Don't mind me, just eating a fried egg and dumping some shakey cell cam vids of some of the songs (1 of 3) we played at the Cover Up at the end of March (thx maddy) :) :) :)
This was the maiden voyage of Sara's new drum pad midi trigger thingy.
edit: this upload got gruk'd(is word?) so my 123 and fried egg narrative is going to be a little wiggly, sorry about it

It's been such a whirlwind of artmaking all month. I've been juggling a lot of projects one day at a time, and progressing steadily towards..something?? Definitely not profit lmao. Here are some pictures from the adventure. Sara and I played a short set at our friend Drew's birthday party. I brought some paint, with permission from the homeowner, to decorate the walls that were about to get repainted, and another arty-Sara-friend painted this incredible aurora scene on an unsanctioned

It started in 2022. After the forced closures of public spaces during the pandemic had been lifted, when it still felt a little naughty to return to them, but the social void had made so many of us hungry for the presence of others that the risks were worth weighing. I had started conceptualizing an essay in response to conversations I was having with people at bars during this time. Something felt different.
I held people while they cried, people scared they may be schizophr...

March has been wicked splendid. She usually is, but this year I feel as though I’ve made it to the other side of a gauntlet of grief with some wisdom and clarity. I rang in 33 on 3/3, and that feels significant, somehow. The next weekend, I got a phonecall from my friend Adam as I was drifting off to dreamspace and found out that his band was going to be in town to play a couple of shows on the University dollar. I crashed their luncheon and learned that they were chosen by a focus group of...

Well, January was absolutely wild. From starting out the New Year with two mass death events in the US, to LA-on-fire & snowstorms in the southeast, to the inauguration and the confirmation hearings, where masks are continuing to fly right off, to the sweeping presidential pardons and executive actions, to Indonesia joining the BRICS, to the bird flu outbreak, to a brokered ceasefire agreement in Gaza (which is dicey, and much too little too late, but hostage deals and a reprieve from the...

Hey y'all, it's been a minute since I've stepped into this space. I've been plugging along on projects, just been a bit quiet. I've been processing through a lot of grief this winter and most of my writing has been a bit scattered and personal. For outies, not for innies, so-to-say.
I want to share a few things I've been working on since November now that I have a little more space to review. My friend Remy came by the art studio a while back and helped me print about 40 of these patche...

Hey y'all. The storm came. My power was out for 52 hours. Since then, the tire fell off of the rim of my Subaru, somebody smashed in the window of my Jeep while I was at a theater fundraiser masquerade (which I got comp'd in to, and left with 4 lbs of beeeeef, thank you FST), and I've made 2 hats and about 70% of a sweater.
I'm generally just really grateful that I have tools, and options, and community. It's been a typical winter. Shit tends to hit the fan in a rolling fashion f...

The art studio is finally back in force. Psychic Spychick had our first band practice of the season this week, deep digging for good tones and rewriting structures and solos and doing good creative play toward making some songs we feel good about recording in a few months. I was describing hammer-ons and pull-offs, and getting the timing just so on slides, and Sara said "it's like your fingers are the hammers inside of the piano," and that is just, kind of a neat and apt way of describing the...

Zionism is white supremacy. Israel is a white supremacist military state. It is a colonial project dropped onto a piece of land that nobody asked anybody else’s permission to use or collaborate on. They just showed up and said this is ours now, law says we can have it, get out or submit—with broad support from the war-planners of the 1930s and 40s, who also did that, and wrote the aforementioned law about it. It has existed in apartheid for its entire history. Just like so many nations we...

I was gifted a new, much larger, pedal board this summer, and I finally had a little time to re-velcro all of my pedals and get them all lined out and wired up. I've only played with it for about 15 minutes since I got it all set up, but I got some good tone from a super shifter/shimmer delay/sonar reverb/silver dragon distortion combo that I am very excited to use when Psychic Spychick starts practicing again.
Just reveling in this little phalanx of robots. Big music to come. A ...

Art alters you.
While the artifacts are impermanent, there is an emotional force in art that lingers. A force that contains an experience that transcends rationality. A force that moves through, with, and against you in waves. When it resonates, the force seeks to replicate itself. It becomes contagious. These “contagious” experie...

As part of the art studio renovations this year, I've decided to upholster the "sound-reinforcement-system." It looks a lot better than just..nailing trash to the wall and putting a curtain in front of it, which was the previous move. This stuff was packaging for a big grow-light upgrade at the weed farm a couple of years ago. I grabbed a stack of it and it has been very handy for rooms-with-drums ever since.
So over this weekend, I finished putting up the sound reinforcement...

Hey all-
Here’s a little video of the art show we did at the end of artscool this summer. Getting back into the swing of things here as winter slowly rolls in. I’m at the art studio almost every day for at least an hour setting up shelves and cleaning and organizing and getting everything ready for making. I am currently upholstering some scrap sheets of packaging foam to use as sound reinforcement in the band room. Maybe I’ll give y’all a video tour once it’s all s...

I've been in Ketchikan for almost a month now. Next week is the last week of ArtsCool, a 4 week summer arts camp I've been teaching "art" class at. The camp has been largely centered around the production of a musical for many years now, with any visual art time being focused around creating the set or costumes or props for the show. This year it's a little different. A little more like it was when I was a kid, with classes not all necessarily building toward the same goal. There are classes ...

I've had some, eh, camera issues lately. My life is a little too disorganized to have my DSLR and SD card reader handy at the moment, and my cell phone camera lens is busted up. But, I am still able to use the camera on the screen side of my phone. Some gymnastics involved, but it gets the job done.
I mentioned a few weeks ago that I was going to make pigment out of dandelions. I did it, and it worked really well. I used a process of botanical pigment extraction called "laking." The fi...

I've been in a sort of prolongued fugue state for a lot of this year. Between the long hours at work, the labor of seeking solutions to seeing the art studio through the next year on our way to creating a vibrant collaborative art space (big news in August if all goes well), the letting go of believing that the people closest to me are brave and willing to struggle for what they know is right after seeing over and over how even the most tender hearts will numb themselves and fall in line, the...

To those of us who are shocked, but not surprised: do not become desensitized to the horror. I know it’s terrible. Terrible things must remain judged as they are. Inhumane, unconscionable, sinister, malicious, supported by robust systems of inequality and xenophobia, supported by technology and capital, intentionally manipulative, tragically misled. Don’t cage your anger, your sadness, your difficult emotions that may overwhelm you. Feel them. Know them. Let them flow through you. Don’t...

I've been working on the next sweet treat in the mail this week: Psychic Spychick posters & stickers & letters on tiny yellow legal pad for all!
