Alembic Moss Growth

Initial idea was to create a laser scan effect, but I thought I can also spice it up with some animated alembic moss that we will retime and make a growth animation on our rock after the laser.
So, enjoy!

Can you think of an alternative to an alembic? I'm still learning on Houdini Apprentice and you can't export alembics.
