Star Trek: TNG 4x20 Full Reaction!

Comments

hope you're enjoying your break, you certainly deserve it with your great reactions

Joe Crammond

With the first half of Wednesday Series 2 out on Netflix, super excited to see Sesskasays' reactions, watched the first episode already, looks very promising

Yeah, there is something great about the last Star Trek reaction prior to a break being a silly and lighthearted Q episode. Second time it’s happened after Jess had the break very shortly after the reaction to Déjà Q. her laugh at Worf’s merry man line is one of the best things ever. I wouldn’t say no to a video of ranking the Q episodes. Poor Jonathan having to go to the hospital still in the Little John costume. Still not the most embarrassing or uncomfortable instance of an actor or actress going to the hospital whilst still in costume or makeup. One of the funnier instances was Boris Karloff going to the hospital for the birth of his daughter Sara all while still made up as the Frankenstein monster. Gave the staff quite the fright.

"Sir, I protest. I am not a merry man!" It's nice that the last TNG reaction before your break is a silly, light-hearted story instead of something heavy and emotionally draining. Maybe you could do a video ranking each Q episode after you finish reacting to TNG. Jonathan Frakes told a story about how he was whacked over the head with a sword while filming this episode and was taken to hospital for stitches. They rolled him into casualty in his Little John costume. Have a nice time on your break, Jess. See you in September. Live long and prosper. 🖖

The more surprising thing is that the episode predates the film by about two months. Does have the feel of interrupting something that would have been great all on its own, yet when the end result is this fun, hard to care too much. Or at least it’s hard to be all that mad about it. Again, fair that you have that Breaking Bad plotline on the brain with dear old Q. Tis richly amusing how the allegedly all powerful and all-knowing keep missing the target, vis-à-vis Picard’s romantic desires. That is a most accurate description of Picard being in the unenviable position of the meeting between the missus and the ex. (Er, uh, well, technically Beverly’s not the missus, sadly.) It could have been its whole episode, and it would have been a great one to end on before Jess has her break. It does feel like Vash did the Alan Rickman move on Picard. Just about as painful if she whipped him up a dish that looks like a Seder at Vincent Price’s house. The reaction to Worf’s famous line is definitely in the running for the greatest reaction moment that Jess has ever had. Like I said, Marina’s gone on record that it’s her favorite Worf moment. Just how serious Worf says it is really the magic of it. I’m in favor of the random pop culture nods when they’re as funny as the one here with Geordi and his ditty about giving his love a story that had no end. Without the lute, he could also do some serious damage with a sword, (so long as we make sure he’s fighting the actual guards and not the post,) and he’ll hear any threats coming a mile away. Love the trip of the dress, which makes perfect sense. You know it’s nutty when even Q has to see the script on this one to figure out what’s going on. Shame that Vash didn’t have anyone waiting in the Royal Folio Depository with a crossbow. Heard about the bullshit sexism. Give a mild pass as Beverly and Deanna do get the moment with the pots, and they weren’t just stuck just being damsels. Would love to see the director’s head go Scanners after learning about Joan of Arc. I would have taken the whole Q and Vash spinoff. Had to ask, “Who’s Beckett Mariner?” then I see, and said, “Ah. Lower Decks. Check.” Next one is one of the chapter-and-verse episodes for me, and that’ll make four that we’ll have gotten to after Déjà Q, Yesterday’s Enterprise, and Remember Me. Shared feeling of greatly looking forward to to that reaction, but first, we wish Jess all the best with enjoying the Risa life. (Just hopefully, Riker doesn’t trick her with any horg’ahn business.)

So the thing is, when this episode first aired, everyone knew the Robin Hood stuff was coming because it was in all the ads. So it's pretty weird that it takes two whole acts to get there, and it can't help but feel like it's interrupting what could have been a perfectly good episode plot all on its own of Vash meeting the rest of the crew and coming to a new understanding of her relationship with Picard. Even Q's entrance is surprisingly late, just making me say "Don't you have a couple planes to crash or something?" Ardra thinks he's into Deanna, Q thinks he's into Vash, can't any of these supposed gods get it right? Speaking of, Picard is thrust into every guy's worst nightmare of the ex and current meeting, with a look on his face like he's been slapped by a wet mackerel. And already I wish this could be the whole thing. Then it gets better when Vash's true intentions are revealed, and it's like she cut Picard's heart out with that shovel. Because it's dull, you twit. It'll hurt more. But that doesn't stop the actual plot from being pretty fun once we get there, including what I dare say is one of the top five reaction moments you've ever had. And it's not exactly a minority opinion that this is one of the franchise's greatest lines, so you don't have to worry about anyone coming after you for it. Followed up by Geordi's ditty about his cherry that had no stone, because Ira Steven Behr (later to create Deep Space Nine) is a madman who'll just throw in these random pop culture nods whenever he feels like it. I can only assume that with no lute to play, he's relegated to guessing that no one's coming. But the best part of all this is Vash, starting off with the fully improvised bit of tripping on her dress and then carrying it. This whole element of the story, with a none too trustworthy woman stuck in an especially nutty Trek plot with no idea what's going on but still instinctively playing everyone against each other, is what keeps my interest up more than anything else. And it's especially rewarding that Q is genuinely surprised by this and has no idea how to handle her after so long dealing with a wholly virtuous Starfleet crew. But eventually it all catches up to her and she has no idea if the pellet with the poison is in the vessel with the pestle or the flagon with a dragon. Sadly, the ending falls apart a bit thanks to some nasty sexism behind the scenes, as despite Marina and Gates both being skilled fencers, they were relegated to just smashing pots onto a few guys, because the director insisted there were no female swordfighters until the 20th century (I wish we could see footage of his head exploding upon learning about Joan of Arc). Then we're left with Vash teaming up with Q because we all knew there was no way she was sticking around full time, and eh, I give it a month tops before they get horribly bored with each other. Now, her time with Beckett Mariner, that's a spinoff I'd be all over. I eagerly await your return, since the next episode is one I've been especially excited for you to get to, but for now, enjoy the Risa life.
