The Sandman 2x09 Full Reaction!

The Sandman 2x09 Full Reaction!

We all knew a reference to the other Loki was coming sometime. And now that people can actually watch the movie again, there will probably be a lot more quoting of it. It seems like lately I've been seeing quite a few things that have me thinking "I heard what you did to Chane Wasanassong, unforgiveable! Then I heard what you did to your father, very funny. So I'm conflicted." That can either be a sign of a well-written moral quandary, or just the writer being lazy, and they're mostly on the good side for now. My parents and I watched the first episode of the new Netflix show Untamed and thought my aunt and uncle would be into it, so we called them and found they'd already finished it on the first day of release and had to rush to stop them spoiling everything. Then we watched Superman for my birthday (I actually quoted it in the Pan's Labyrinth comment because that's how excited it made me) and they almost spilled some of it again.

Really any excuse to have Jenna is a good one. You could have done the inner monologue of it all with the second Corinthian. Does make more pragmatic sense to give him the scene partner with Johanna. Fair point on the love life of Constantine being such a catastrofuck. The rushed nature of it all just threw me for such a loop. Combined with my being a picky asshole with the shipping in shit. Not to mention the Gaiman of it all really made it uncomfortable to me. (Unless he had nothing to do with it, which I’ll slightly retract that one if so. It’s on the brain during that and it hampers enjoyment is all I’m saying.) The “Owww” scene would have been fun. Could have gone with the Lucifer of it all. Not wanting to confuse the audience being probably the reason why the change is made. Still down for that type of spinoff. In terms of variants of Lucifer, Tim Curry is top of the list, though sadly his health rules him out. As mentioned, I’d be down for the Gabriel Byrne portrayal in this type of spinoff, whilst acknowledging that it would be understandable if he didn’t want to do it given the Gaiman association. Good to know about the character combination. Speak more on that when we can. Lyta having the Medusa hair... Her having the Clash of the Titans look, I’d be down for the Harryhausen of it all. But yes, good that Jess didn’t have to worry about that. Still a goddamn shame about Gilbert.

Disclosure: seen all the episodes presently available; will likely stay up Wednesday night to catch the last one. Keep discussions as spoiler free as possible. (Though I see the comment on youtube saying we are at the same spot with the show. All the same, better safe than sorry.) As to this episode. You say that following this, you should brace yourself for what’s to come. Given the ending, it seems the only sensible thing to do, and more on that ending in a minute. Start by expressing respect for Mrs. Shore. Quite cruel of Loki to barbecue the lady. All because she didn’t say “God bless you” when he sneezed? Seems very harsh. Understandably, you are invested in Delirium being reunited with Barnabas. The world is lucky that Barnabas is not a cat as Delirium would get medieval if anything bad happened. Good that she pays the visit to Destiny. You comment on his cryptic ways. Man does have the cryptic stoic thing down pat. The autism, surprisingly enough, makes the cryptic part fairly easy to translate, with occasional moments where it is a trifle difficult. The stoic part, on the other hand, can be trickier to decipher as it does often send mixed messages. The multiple Destinys all at once really exacerbates the ADD, though I loved your reaction to that. And you see how it gives Morpheus hope. Now if only he could give Lucienne a vacation. Felt her concealed annoyance when he started to make a mess in the library when looking for something to read. Nice little reaction to Daniel shedding following the Demeter situation. Big talking point seems to be the second Corinthian and Johanna. Love how you were wary of the second Corinthian. Supposing he did harm the dog, aside from having you on his hands, he would do well to count his blessings that this variant of Constantine is not played by Keanu Reeves. They throw at us the romantic tension, and... see... Yeah, I can’t lie, I hated it. Past a scene or two of it, I’m just yelling, “Don’t get too feisty on me now, show!! Let’s not go down that path!!” One thing that does standout more particularly when watching again in the reaction, it just really rubs me the wrong way how incredibly forward the second Corinthian is with the flirting and Johanna is not interested. (And also makes me wonder if Gaiman wrote for those scenes or not, and if he did, that makes it MUCH WORSE.) And we most CERTAINLY do not need the relationship endorsement from Joffrey Fucking Baratheon of all goddamn people. Now I say all this, and you laughed through most of the scenes of the bullshit, so maybe I’m the fucking asshole. Wouldn’t be the first time. By the same token, you do acknowledge that it is rushed and sprung on us rather out of nowhere, and yes, Jenna and Boyd do have the good energy in the scenes, so maybe we meet halfway with this one. Love Odin taking Loki, and saying that since Morpheus is dying, they calls it even. Quite the thing when the dog lady leads Lyta to the kindly ones. They gave her one damn fine new look. And now they are off. Feel so bad for Nuala, one, having to put up with her pompous prick of a brother, and two, when Titania swiped the necklace, good eye on that one. Makes an impression when it makes all the Destinys shrink down to one. Morpheus undoubtedly feels that, and you seem him despairing, “DESTINY! DESTINY! NO ESCAPING THAT FOR ME! DESTINY! DESTINY! NO ESCAPING THAT FOR ME!” Bringing us to Gilbert. We both adored the talk he had with Morpheus. Stephen once again shows how he has one of the best voices for conveying wisdom. And it makes it all the worse when Lyta kills him; we about there, reaction-wise. Which leads to a man facing a very difficult problem. On the one hand, being behind Lyta and her revenge, and on the other, THEY KILLED GILBERT!! And it means that I could continue fully supporting and encouraging Lyta to kill Morpheus and have her revenge. But now she has killed Gilbert, hence my conflict. Decisions, decisions... Meantime, Lucienne needs to get to safety as of the end of this episode. I add that concern for Merv was strong on my end, love of Mark is very strong. Again, see what you have to say about the remaining episodes, and the appearance of Daffodil. Hear you on just taking one’s time with the shows, and just enjoying the experience, as that’s me as I hate binging. One of the few exceptions that proves the rule being the Shenanigans by Mike Flanagan, and even then, I micro binge. Hoping for the best for you, copyright-wise, and thank you for the lovely reaction, Jess.

Like I said last time, all the material with Johanna here is new, and now it's clear why they brought her back. In the comic, the Corinthian is just on his own doing all this stuff, with his inner monologue to let us follow it, but in this medium he needs someone to talk to. And Johanna is certainly a very good choice for that, with an instantly fun dynamic between them that makes me regret this is all we're getting. I'd call the romantic undertones rushed, but John Constantine's love life over his 40 year history has been such a clusterfuck that I can't exactly say any of it is out of character. My one regret here is they removed the Corinthian giving a casual "Owww" when Loki turns into fire, which Boyd definitely could have pulled off. A more curious change is that the bar where they meet Puck isn't the one in the hotel but Lux, the nightclub that Lucifer now runs and is the main setting for his spinoff (and about the only thing transplanted into the Lucifer show besides the character himself). I'd guess they were worried about confusing people unaware of the connection if they made it too explicit this is the same version of the character. I mentioned that a certain character from Volume 5 would have to be worked around given their important role in the ending, and it turns out they merged her role into Mad Hettie. It's the most fitting character to do it with, I guess, though I'm left wondering what her motivation is supposed to be, and with everything the last episode still has to cover, I doubt we're going back to her. Like I said last time, the major improvement here is that we much better understand why Lyta is doing this even as we're urging her to stop. And since the show started, I've been hoping for your sake that it would change one particular part of her transformation that had her growing Medusa hair, so that was a big relief, as painful as the rest is.
