Rendering 101 pt. 17: Displacement in Redshift

This time Manuel talks about how to setup sub-polygon displacement in Redshift3D. After going through the steps necessary to make RS render Displacements we'll explore the different option the engine offers and discuss in-depth how the "Auto Bump Map" feature works.

Fixed it, thanks for pointing it out and sorry for the inconvenience. :) Cheers, Mo

hi! is it possible the two download links for this lesson are broken? they do not seem to be working. really love your content!, will (looks like its only the hdri image link that is broken - i will just find a different one, thanks)

Hey Manuel and Moritz, You are the best! Nobody else can explain these complex topics like you! Would love to see a tutorial on the high poly / low poly workflow and how vector displacement can be used. This would be so helpful. 1. How to create a low poly model + displacement map from a high poly model in houdini 2. How to use those in Redshift to achieve the same result as if you rendered the high poly model 3. What do you have to change in order to use these in WebGL (threejs) vs a game engine vs rendering in redshift. E.g. when do you have to flip the y component? I have been struggling with this workflow for quite a while and just can’t get it to work. I tried using the maps baker and the simple baker from the sidefx labs but had no luck with recreating the look of the high poly model. I’m thankful for every hint. Cheers Wolfgang

Hi Chaz, that's most likely through the magic of editing :) Also Multi-GPU can speed up your renders quite substantially. In this case though I suspect you're referring to a cut in the video. Cheers, Mo

My renders are taking far longer than yours (eg. @6:23 yours = 2.09s but mine take 1m13s)? I have a TitanX GPU and a pretty beefy rig, so this appears a little out of whack. You're certainly not my IT dept but if you have a quick thought about a general RS setting I might have overlooked I'd be greatly obliged. Many thanks.

SORRY! I think I am being an idiot. I can't find the RS_displacement map.. you dragged it so quickly I never saw its filename at 4min 52seconds . Which file are we meant to be putting in there? in the texture node as I've nothing in my folder starting with RS_displ...

I have done a lot of scanning at my university with artec scanners, they are lovely and hi-resolution, but very very expensive, as is the software. I'd love to get started with photogrammetry as a means of asset creation and noticed that Alicevision was available under Houdini LABS. I love your work with aixterior so I'd wondered if your pipeline had involved houdini, or could be set up through houdini in some way?

Hi Zach. I am using RealityCapture for my commercial photogrammetry needs. I tried Meshroom, but never got beyond the basic workflow. I found the application to create promising results, though. What exactly are you interested in?

Entagma

Hi Manuel, Do you use Alicevision in your photogrammetry pipeline? And if so would it be possible to see your workflow? Cheers,

Loose-Trousered Spectator

Not forgetting the option of covering Mantra topics too, as that came in second place...

Entagma

Heyhey, in our poll on render engines, Redshift came out as the engine most people were interested in, so we're gonna focus on that in the rendering 101 course. Cheers, Mo

guys are we going to learn more stuff besides redshift? thank you
