I guess that is due to the distance from the mic and how hard you were tapping ect. I worked in the film industry in Toronto for several years. I have a few real world practical tips you could do to help reduce background noise. Like traffic, barking dogs and loud neighbors. Although after living in Toronto for so long the constant sound of traffic was kind of relaxing, like waves on the shore or rain.
