After having watched Devdas half a dozen times since its release, I perceive Dev as not the only “toxic” one here. Everyone is toxic when seen with the perspective of time; toxicity brought on by societal, cultural and familial enforcements, especially during that specific time period, i.e. early 1900’s. Just looking at the matriarchal aspects: - Devdas’s mother represents his abandonment at an impressionable age. The loss and lack of maternal love. She then gives in to her shadow side of arrogance and self importance. - Paro represents his love and his soul, found and then lost due to rushed and unfair circumstances that allowed no space for even the smallest human error. - Paros mother represents aspects of the motherly love and purity he missed out on, who later gives in to pride by rushing her daughter’s marriage; within 7 days. - Chandramukhi represents shame and darkness; obsession and a love that isn’t or cannot be reciprocated within their current social and moral structures. The scene where he hits Paro with her necklace near her temple is very deeply rooted in symbolism where Devdas then uses her blood as “sindoor”. In this scene it’s symbolic of the sacred bond of marriage; soul union. Yes, this act can be seen as abuse, but the emotional depth of this scene cannot be written off as just black or white. There is so much depth to this movie that it cannot be unpacked in one viewing. Layers of understanding reveals itself with time and maturity.
