If I'm Googling right, and anything you find these days can be trusted, 500 yards would be a little outside the maximum distance an infantry marksman is expected to be able to shoot, and well inside a sniper's usual engagement distance. Damn, these hillbillies can shoot.

I had been telling him about this podcast the other night and we got the idea to scroll through DirecTV’s on-demand selection. And we found all of the Mountain Monsters season on there completely intact like a mosquito trapped in amber. We watched two episodes and if anything, the pod undersells just what a delightful nightmare of a show this is
