ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS.
Added 2017-09-05 00:30:04 +0000 UTCI asked you guys to ask me questions and I said I would pick 20 to answer or riff on one very interesting one... So here goes.
Pavan Konda "Where do you learn about youtube? You have very clever ways about making money on this, and I understand its not much but you are making more than many people. I really love your ideas! Do you attend any youtube meetups or do you have a mentor? Or is everything online?"
A lot of what I learn or have learned about YouTube has been through trial, error and success. I also asked my brother a lot of questions early on. Greg was the closest person I had to a mentor, but at this point, we are even keel with each other so we help each other out whenever possible. I wouldn't call anything I do on YouTube "a clever way to make money." I think every avenue has it's challenges. Whether you're a doctor, a car salesman, a computer programmer, or a YouTuber, every profession has it's challenges. There are a lot of backend challenges the public doesn't see that YouTubers face. Right now, I am dealing with YouTube saying a lot of my new videos are not advertiser friendly, even though they meet the guidelines... I then have to do a manual request (meaning someone from YouTube reviews my video) before it gets the full benefit of advertiser revenue. And often by that point, most of the views the video will get have already happened. So it's a big dance now. lol.
Shital Binnod "I just want to ask why you stopped periscoping?"
Because I do YouTube Live Streams, which seems a lot more stable, Periscope seems like an obsolete choice. The stream would often drop and additionally, because it's becoming harder and harder to sustain a living off of YouTube, I have chosen YouTube live streams as they can monetize, which benefits the channel more than Periscope and people can look at the stream later as I usually make them public right away. The last thing I mentioned there, it being able to be viewed later, is a huge benefit in my opinion.
Veeru "Do you share your earnings with any of your guests?"
My show is treated like a talk show. Guests don't go on talk shows like Conan or Jimmy Fallon and earn money. Guests go on talk shows for more exposure or to reenforce their branding. The thing I always pitch to potential guests is, "If my audience likes you, they'll follow you on social media." Social media plays a big role today in the entertainment industry. And at the very least, I promise my guests a good time - they always have fun. Most of the work with videos published isn't the shooting. Shooting is the smallest (and most fun) part of the making of videos.
"Why don't you just fast forward the songs when you are watching at home , that's what most of us do who find those songs annoying."
I guess we get concerned that we'd miss something key or crucial to the overall experience. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between a song being crucial to the story, simply being artistic, or just there for commercial reasons. Even though the songs were long in Lagaan, they were crucial to the story if my memory serves me right.
Ashok Kumar Patel "Hi Jaby. I would like to ask something more about your personal stuffs. Would love to know what made you create youtube channel for reactions, reviews, short films, etc. And what are your personal dreams going forward with this?"
Before YouTube or any other online video hub, I was sharing my short films with physical media and getting people to look at a VHS tape or a DVD was actually pretty challenging. Most of the time when artists shared their content it was never looked at. The internet made things easier. Getting someone to click on a link is easier.
So my channel was initially created in an effort to share my short films. Reviews and talk shows came next (much later). Reactions came about because I just wanted to participate in the Star Wars conversation when Episode 7's trailer dropped. My long term goal is make films. Steps are being taken towards the goal slowly. First... short films and web series.
Daniel Prakash "Would you consider shooting reactions with ur patreons whenever they visit the USA :)"
Yes.
Akshay Mahajan "Will you attend my funeral?"
That's a very dark question. Everything alright with you, man? You can message me directly.
Afsana Noor "Hello Jaby. Do you have plan to watch Zindagi Na Milegi dobara/Lakshya/Jodha Akbar anytime soon? Waiting for your review on them for a long time."
I plan to watch Barfi next. I had mentioned a few other dvds in my possession that I want to get to after that... but I think the next thing needed is a list of all the videos I have so people can vote on what we watch next. I think in order to move things along faster, Achara and I will have to start watching and reviewing movies separately. I will also ask people that both my audience and I trusts (like Cortney Wright) to do reviews. The fact of the matter is... editing takes a lot of time and until Achara and I have a separate full time editor that understands our style and is affordable, the in front of the camera stuff will probably have to be delegated a bit, particularly for movie reviews.
Nayeem Nazarullah "As a lover of martial arts, do you follow MMA? If so, who are some of your favourite fighters?"
I watch MMA whenever there is a big fight, but I don't follow it like sports. I recently tried to watch the Mayweather vs McGreggor fight, but had other engagements to attend.
Luke Davidson "Why is it you don't go to the gym anymore? When did you first find out about Priyanka Chopra? Did you know of Hrithik Roshan double thump which he wanted to keep to show that no ones perfect?"
I go to the gym still, just not as regularly as I used, especially recently, because YouTube's system is making life harder lately. If you noticed, "Sex Chat" was spelled "Sx Chat," because despite the fact the video is pretty innocuous, it was getting flagged as containing inappropriate content making it not suitable for all advertisers. So I had to keep going back and reworking and testing different ways to circumvent this issue. I've had videos that are JUST ME TALKING get flagged as inappropriate. So YouTube is killing my sleep lately and what time I have, I put it towards the channel or writing.
Rishab Garg "Have you watched Swades, it was gifted to you while back? ...Also when is Greg's reaction of pitchers coming?"
Have not watched Swades, yet. And Greg's reaction for Pitchers is probably coming in two or three weeks. I have other web series reactions I have to finish putting out first with Hope Jaymes, John Humphrey, Kiana Madani and other guests.
Veeru "Which was the worst Bollywood movie you watched so far?"
Bollywood, specifically? It would be a toss up between Chandni Chowk to China and Bodyguard... that's off the top of my head. I feel like there is probably another one I should be mentioning, but that's what comes to mind.
Sarvesh Joshi "Among all the bunch of Indian Films you much have watched or would like to watch(whose trailer you might have seen). Which films did you find more interesting and variant? And Why? It may be for any reason, for e.g -conceptually, visually, star cast, etc.
My favorite Indian film so far is still Gangs of Wasseypur Part 1 and 2. Martin Scorsese is my favorite director and Gangs of Wasseypur had a very Scorsese feeling to it. I mean, the ending of Part 2 felt so much like The Departed. But, after that, it's probably PK. I know that PK is considered commercial in India, but I really appreciated it's message because I feel like we've all been effected by it. ALL of us. Meaning, every single person on earth. I have yet to watch Oh My God, but it's on the list.
