Patreon Apple Tax Starting November (How to Avoid It)

Apple is starting to add its tax to Patreon subscriptions beginning in November. To avoid this added fee, please purchase memberships through a desktop computer and NOT an iOS device like an iPhone or iPad. This affects shop purchases and subscriptions.

However, if you are already a subscriber, your tier price will remain the same. This only applies to new subscribers.

Apple decided to slap a 30% fee on any and all purchases you make on Patreon via their iOS app. Patreon doesn't get any of this 30% fee, and no creators get any of this 30% fee either. Apple alone benefits from this, and Patreon is forced to charge this extra fee or they can't have their app on Apple products.

I don't have any control over this, but I appreciate your understanding. Moving forward, I would recommend always trying to purchase things on Patreon through a desktop device to avoid the added Apple tax.

HOW TO AVOID? Pay for everything Patreon-related on a desktop/website or an android device, NOT THE iOS (Apple) APP.

CAN I STILL USE THE APP FOR OTHER STUFF ON MY IPHONE OR IPAD? Yes, you can use the Patreon app for liking posts, commenting, etc. Just don't pay for anything there.

WHO DOES THIS APPLY TO? If you're already paying for your tier, and you're happy there, and your subscription rate already gets automatically debited every month, you're fine. If you are a current patron and decide to upgrade your tier to a higher tier (or free member upgrading to paid), you should use a computer or android device to pay. If you unsubscribe and resubscribe on an Apple device, you will see this fee on the app. Go to the Patreon website on a regular computer and pay there. If you're brand new and want to sign up, go to the Patreon website on a regular computer and pay there. Basically, if you want to avoid a 30% upcharge for using the Patreon app on an Apple device, you will need to use a computer or android device to make any payments.
