Podcasting Day: Streaming Shows That Came From the Wrong Decade, with Jason Pargin! 🌭

Welcome to Podcasting Day! This week author and provocateur Jason Pargin has an all-new book… to plug! If This Book Exists, You’re in the Wrong Universe is the next entry in the John Dies at the End series. This is a huge day for longtime podcast fans looking forward to several more years of Jason plugging this book. Truly the beginning of a bold new era.

Today we’re talking about shows that seem to come from the wrong decade. Brockway brought Daybreak, a wildly out of touch with the teens zombie comedy that would’ve killed in the Joss Whedon knock-off dense early 2000s. Seanbaby brought Guardians of Justice, a show that would have definitely been tolerated in the late ‘90s, before we as a culture learned how to make good comic book shows. And Jason brought Jack Reacher, which is literally the 1970s The Incredible Hulk show except Hulk all the time. Wonder at the improbable size of Jack Reacher! Thrill as Jack Reacher is consistently huge! Marvel as men Jack Reacher could accidentally eat wildly attack him without provocation!

Anyway, that’s the podcast. Reacher us wherever you get podcasts, and Jack us wherever you leave reviews.

When the Tom Cruise Reacher movies came out the book fans were upset because he's so short and the character is supposed to be really tall. When I heard about that I just kept wondering why all the strangers would randomly pick fights with a huge muscle hobo. The new show proves how right I was.

Haven't watched it, but Guardians of Justice sounds like a much shittier Teen Titans Go! Your hot takes on pop culture are pretty out of date when one of the franchises you're "roasting" are making similar observations in their kids show.

Matt Edwards

I can't believe Thad Castle became Jack Reacher

I'll admit that fucking up Alan Moore's soul is the only worthwhile thing Thatcher has ever done but don't tell me the man's any happier for it. The man who wrote John "Disaster Bi" Constantine and snapped Commissioner Gordon's mind like a twig does not strike me as a particularly cheerful individual. And take it from someone who knows, coked up EDM magicks in the Fuck Yurt lose their appeal the second you realize none of these wizards have washed their anus since the eighties.

Clementine Danger

Alan Moore is a literal sex wizard who does spooky magick with the bass player from Bauhaus. How could it not be fun to be him?

Daphne Lawless

There's a scene in The Venture Brothers where Brock Samson kills some pirates with his ass. It's spectacular.

I only watched like half the teaser for Daybreak, and it sounds like that was the right call. I had a bone deep "Ew fake teens and zombies, no." reaction just to the 30 seconds I was exposed to.

Flippant Sausage

I liked Reacher. But I am a Dad, so that's kind of expected. My wife also liked Reacher, perhaps even more than I (she binged it before I did then rewatched it with me). I am not sure if that's expected. She is a fairly violent person, so maybe it is.

In the abstract I like things that are smart more than I like things that are dumb, but Snyder is the exception. I like him. In another life, I would like to be him. It seems fun to be him in the exact way it doesn't seem fun to be Alan Moore. Fuck, I'll even stand up for Sucker Punch. He really thought he was doing something and it's fucking adorable. When Alan Moore tortures hot women he knows exactly what he's doing, but Snyder? Pffff, he's got no idea. He's too pretty and fun! He wants to be our pal! I love him so much.

Clementine Danger

I may just have to try again. And as far as Watchmen goes, the movie is better than the book, imo. It's the perfect vehicle for Snyder, because he fucking hates superheroes.

CHAUGGLE

Oh, be careful with that. I saw the Watchmen movie before I read the comic and I liked it so much I'm a Snyder apologist to this day. You can really fuck up your brain doing these things out of order and trust me, there's no way to unfuck a Snyder brain.

Clementine Danger

The details don't matter but if you haven't listened to this one yet, know that you may end up in a place where you're genuinely wondering if you're supposed to laugh at Billy Corgan's brother being mugged on a train. You're not. Keep digging.

Clementine Danger

I'm so glad Jason went hard on reacher. I had the same thoughts but he made them hilarious

Robert Daniel Pickard

I liked Reacher, for what it was. Meat Mountain stomping through rural north Georgia kicking the asses of idiots is just fine with me.

CHAUGGLE

honestly, i tried watching the cartoon before the live action was out. and it was a chore. But i've watched the netflix version more than once. i liked it better. it is its own thing. just watch it as it's own thing and not compare it to the previous show.

DeltaFoxtrot

This is actually a trick of perspective. Although Jack Reacher looks seven feet tall, stare closely at your screen and you'll realize the entire image is merely a few inches.

Brendan McGinley

I tried a couple times but couldn't. Is there an episode that you suggest?

CHAUGGLE

I liked netflix cowboy bebop.
