Katherine and Caroline are so badass, love them!

Brianna Dawson

I love to see the way Elena is around Damon, you're right she is different from when she is around Stefan! Everything you mentioned is really interesting and it amazes me how good you are at making these links between all these things hahaha (I know you're not at your first rewatch, but still) thanks! :)

That neckless is the allegory of Damon and Elena relationship.

Patpet

♡♡♡

Marie-Ève Vignon

Ohhhh okay thanks for clearing that up! Also I see what you mean, cause when Caroline and Damon were fighting I was thinking in my head that she shouldn't be able to overthrow him like this.... but you're right I'll just go with it! it still works quite well! :)

It is good that you noticed the way Damon and Elena were acting during the kitchen scene. This brings us to the necklace then in how she reacted to his question about the bond. The reason I brought up the importance of the road trip in the last episode is because of this point. This is an episode after a third road trip between them. The show has the habit of wanting to remind us in subtle ways to think back on previous episodes and past events, this is one of them. A road trip and bonding as well as paying attention to how the two of them acting with each other, it takes us back to the first road trip which took place after Elena find out about Katherine and she wasn't wearing the necklace. This was episode 1x11 As Patpet had mentioned, Stefan gave her the necklace in order to protect her from Damon and compulsion, not as a symbol of love or anything of that nature. Now the thing is what is protection? To guard against, to hide, to feel secure, to be even caged in as it were, to feel safe, or to repress or suppress even. This is what Patpet just mentioned concerning Stefan in his comment for this episode. Yet, in Episode 1x11 what do we see take place, Damon even brings up about the point about her not having her necklace. Why bring this to her attention. This makes it so that she now knows she is vulnerable to him. A key word their is vulnerable, what is being vulnerable, being open, not being safe, being free, being yourself. Now what do we see take place at the bar in 1x11. This is the first time in the series, that we see both Elena and Damon's other side. We see Elena actually having fun and being carefree, she even brings this up at the end on the car ride home, I used to be more fun, something that also had been mentioned by others leading up to this episode. Do you see Elena acting the same way around Stefan? We get another glimpse of this Elena during the 60s dance of last season while dancing with Damon. This brings us to the matter of the Bond. Damon mentions road trip bonding in 2x03 when they come back from Duke, Stefan brought up using a manipulation tactic known as Triagulation in 1x12 about her and Damon bonding after the first road trip in order to get her on his side in betraying Damon when it comes to the grimoire. This bring us to 1x14 and how Elena now uses the necklace and the discussion of the necklace during this scene. Elena: Okay, when we were in Atlanta, why didn't you use your compulsion on me? Damon: Who's to say I didn't? Elena: You didn't. I know you didn't. But you could have. You and I...we have something. An understanding. And I know that my betrayal hurt you, different from how it is with you and Stefan, but I'm promising you this now, I will help you get Katherine back. Notice something here, this is the first time that Elena mentions a bond between her and Damon, she doesn't use that word, but her words being used her amount to the same thing. They have something. This refers back to my first comment on talking about the necklace as well about promises. After this dialogue, Damon then eventually puts the necklace back around Elena's neck and states the following as well. Damon: I didn't compel you in Atlanta because we were having fun. I wanted it to be real. I'm trusting you. Don't make me regret it. The key line here is I wanted it to be real. Has Stefan ever been real with Elena? Stefan from the get go has wanted to do one thing with Elena, keep her in the Dark, and also as it is brought up, to pretend to be human so he could forget being a vampire. He doesn't want things to be real, it's all about avoiding reality, or wanting to live out a fantasy and e.g. protect that fantasy, remember necklace equal protection for Stefan against Damon, in more ways than just compulsion is the symbolism at play her. Also in 1x11 this is the first time as I stated before that we get a glimpse at who the real Damon is in some cases, or his other side, and the same goes for Elena, and even Jeremy because this is the episode that he meets Anna for the first time and he states one thing, I'm just getting back to my old self. This is something that Elena brought up about her old self earlier in Season 1, we get a glimpse of that old self for the first time in the road trip with Damon. Furthermore, what takes place during the two previous road trips? We see Elena save Damon's life when he was about to be put on fire by Lexi's boyfriend. In the second road trip we see Damon save Elena's life by taking arrow in the back. So what does the necklace really mean to Elena anymore? There is a moment in 1x20 when Damon mentions he doesn't have any friends and Elena looks disappointed or frowns over this statement. This brings us to the looks now in this episode as Damon mentions this and as you noticed her looking at him.

In answer to your question, Bill couldn't be compelled by Damon because he somehow learned to focus his mind and overcome being compelled. It's classic "just go with it" writing. It really just boils down to "the plot calls for it". I think nobody bothering to check his wallet for vervain would have been just as good an excuse, but the writers decided to go with a Jedi mind focusing thing. I really enjoy TVD, and overall the writing is good, but they are kind of famous for making a rule and then ignoring it when convenient. You'll often see young vampires overpowering older vampires when needed. A continuing trend you're not supposed to notice of werewolves that were set up as very rare and close to extinction becoming as common as hamsters in a pet store. Vervain was set up as rare and hard to come by in the beginning, now everyone and their pet seems to have it and they're even spiking the coffee at the local bar & grill for everyone to enjoy. So, don't try to understand it too much, you just have to go with it.

I always enjoy Caroline and Damon’s lil fight in this episode. She was angry and actually smacked him 😅 and Damon says Bummer I always like a good girl fight- this is one of my favourite lines of Damon. He definitely has the best lines in the show most funny ones. He was so funny here. Next episode is one of my top favourites of the whole show so excited for it!!

Patpet

I didn’t like Damon snapping Alaric neck, you do not do that to your friends and Alaric is right to be pissed, but at the same time I didn’t like Alaric asking Damon to take a beat with Elena. Elena is now 18 and she seems to be finally a bit happy around Damon. It is not Alaric business to interfere that much. That to me was out of line, even if he is taking a parenting role, imagine your parents going to your possible love interest and tell him to take a beat. Wouldn’t you be horrified with embarrassment? Also people forget that Damon is a person that has lived for 170 years, and people that are in their 30's or much younger are telling him how to behave. I would be so irritated, like he was, and quite rightfully so. Elena, started to like Damon more openly, but in her mind, in order to admit it, he has to act like his brother does pretending to be human, living a lie, being socially accepted by her friends. I absolutely love the way Damon reacted. He isn't apologetic, with Elena about been a vampire, or with anybody else, that is a big difference between him and Stefan. Stefan was pretending to be human in front of Elena, so she never had really confronted the fact that she is actually dating a vampire. Suppressing your nature has consequences, as we know with Stefan that hasn't a middle ground, or he is a good behaviour, too good to be true, Stefan or he is the ripper, because he's never learn to control his vampirism, he just repressed it, until it comes out like a blasting bomb and if Damon is bad, Stefan when is bad is ten time worse. Damon, strangely enough, is actually more stable in that department; he is all middle ground and he stands strongly on it. He faced his vampirism and deal with it, because that's who he is and he can't do anything about it but embrace it. What Damon is telling to Elena is "I'm not Stefan, that's what I am and if you think I'm a monster why are you around me? I'm a vampire, so take it or leave it" and that is self respect. That is a great allegory for relationships in real life. You can't go around trying to change people according to what you would like that person to be, people are what they are. And if you try to hide who you are with the purpose of getting the person you love, your real personality will come out before or after with devastating consequences, on which many divorces are based on (I thought you were different/ when I met you, you were another person, you've changed...etc.). And if you like someone, you have to love what that someone is and respect it, or decide that, that someone is not the person for you.
