Dr. No is THE First James Bond film. It is the introduction to the character… the perfect introduction actually. Sean Connery’s first lines in his first shot, “Bond, James Bond.” Dr. No introduced us to SPECTRE, by telling us what the anacronym means. The style of James Bond was created here and the Tone was set for the next films to come. There has been a Common Misconception that the original James Bond films, going all the way up to Pierce Brosnan have no continuity and are not connected. That they can be watched in any order, and it won’t matter, because there is no major overarching story, that has pieces in all the films that have to be seen to understand the story. This is only true to an extent. The original James Bond films were made in a time before cable television, before home media, and way before internet streaming. When making each sequential film, the filmmakers could not be sure that even half the audience had seen the previous films. This is evident by the time you get to the 70s, and people nowadays recall that Roger Moore was their first Bond. I’ve even heard stories of people going to the movies in the 60s, and From Russia With Love or Goldfinger was their first. Everyone has their first Bond film and their own introduction. So each of the films were made in a way that did not require you to have seen the previous films. Most of the films have a beginning, middle and conclusion to a story. I say most because in the beginning with Sean Connery, it is evident that they were trying to keep some continuity with SPECTRE, until… well later on that. Watching ALL the films in the order that they were made and released allows you to see that there actually is an Overarching Storyline that spans 16 films across 27 years. The Story is of James Bond himself, and how he grows as a character and a man. His relationships with the women in his life, commonly known as “Bond Girls,” are where most of the influence on his character comes from. The Bond Girls are not just sexy beautiful women for James Bond to sleep with and discard. They, themselves as characters, are a vital importance in the growth and evolution of the James Bond character. Also, it does make sense to look at the events of Casino Royale as backstory to Sean Connery’s and everybody else’s James Bond. Casino Royale was the first ever James Bond book written by Ian Fleming in 1953, not made into a film until Daniel Craig. The events in this story, especially the relationship with Vesper Lynd, are part of the DNA for the James Bond character that you see in Dr. No and beyond. Casino Royale tells us that James Bond is a very Romantic person and his relationship with Vesper Lynd set the tone for how James Bond would interact with women on all of the future missions and films. Vesper closed off Bond’s Romantic side… but, will it ever be opened again?

Looking forward to this, love that you’re continuing the Bond series. But I’m wondering, is there no Matrix Reloaded full reaction? I was really looking forward to that one too.

Yoshio

I signed up to watch your reactions to the early Bond movies. Good luck and looking forward to hearing what you think of them. 😀👍
