The Red Dress

When I created Leona, I was still heavily influenced by 80s/90s movies and, although I loved traditional witches, pop culture witches adapted to the gothic and (a little) punk fashion in the 80s, mainly due to the influence of bands like Depeche Mode, The Cure and Siouxie and the Banshees. In the 90s, movies like “The Crow” (with Brandon Lee), “Dark City” and “The Matrix” popularized the even more stylized look, with those flowing overcoats, which were very common in John Woo movies with some famous pop culture song, pigeons and feathers in the wind. 🪶🕊️

There was a movie that I ended up watching WAY later, it was THE CRAFT, which is now a 90s classic, with Neve Campbell and Fairuza Balk, although it seems obvious, unfortunately it didn't influence me at all. Thinking about it now, the first drawing I made of Leona had almost nothing to do with her current look. She wore black pants with combat boots, a black shirt and a black overcoat, like a standard metal head. I think Cristina Scabbia from Lacuna Coil had a look like that at one time.

As time went by, I learned how to draw flowing fabrics and decided to give her a skirt. I was slightly inspired by a design that Yoshitoshi Abe used in a Serial Experiments Lain game for PSX. I won't deny that the design turned out really cool, maybe because that time coincided with the period when I started to make a living from drawing and started to dedicate myself (and dare) a lot more.

But after a few years, I decided to draw a new story for her. I had already done a few, but all of them in a fanzine that I drew when I was in high school. It was a very confusing period in my life, and I believe I already talked about it in the previous entry of the Book of Shadows. Music was a constant during that period and it was very common to see me always with headphones on, totally introspective and lost in my thoughts, and that was the case for a long time. It was at that time that I listened to Elvenking's album The Winter Wake and, in addition to that, in a very short period of time another album by a band I really like came out – Megadeth – United Abominations, with a specific song that featured the singer who inspired the first drawing I ever made of Leona – Cristina Scabbia. 🧛🏻‍♀️🎙️

Then, the video for Tout le Monde came out with excerpts sung by Scabbia, and that cape-in-the-wind style with a corset made a big impact on me and I started to research more about the costume trends of singers from various metal bands of the time, such as Tarja Turunen and Vibeke Stene. I started thinking about a dress that would leave her legs free for more mobility and still have the same effect I had seen in the video. The black shirt under the corset and pieces that would be almost like independent “long sleeves” tied with a strap. The colors were kind of biased, because I always liked red and black and they ended up being the basis for the dress.

Luiza made such a COOL drawing of Leona wearing a hat that I honestly couldn't resist and surrendered to the witch's hat. And, unlike before, today I can hardly imagine Leona without a hat, be it a witch's hat, a noble's hat or even a gangster's fedora with the Calavera pinned to it.

Quando criei Leona, eu ainda tinha muita influência de filmes dos anos 80/90 e, apesar de adorar as bruxas tradicionais, as bruxas da cultura pop se adaptaram à moda gótica e (um pouquinho) do Punk nos anos 80, principalmente por influência de bandas como Depeche Mode, The Cure e Siouxie and the Banshees. Nos anos 90 já foram filmes como “O Corvo” (com Brandon Lee), “Cidade das Sombras” e “The Matrix” popularizaram o visual ainda mais estilizado, com aqueles sobretudos esvoaçantes, que eram muito comuns nos filmes do John Woo com alguma música famosa da cultura pop, pombos e penas ao vento. 🪶🕊️

Teve um filme que acabei vendo BEM depois, foi aquele THE CRAFT, que hoje é um clássico dos anos 90, com a Neve Campbell e a Fairuza Balk, apesar de parecer óbvio, infelizmente não me influenciou em quase nada. Parando pra pensar agora, o primeiro desenho que eu fiz da Leona não tinha quase nada a ver com visual atual dela. Ela usava calças pretas com coturnos, uma camisa preta e um sobretudo preto, como uma metal head padrão, acho que a Cristina Scabbia do Lacuna Coil tinha um visual assim numa época.

Como o tempo aprendi a desenhar tecidos esvoaçantes e resolvi dar uma saia pra ela, tive uma levíssima inspiração em um design que o Yoshitoshi Abe usou um game de Serial Experiments Lain para PSX. Não vou negar que o design ficou muito maneiro, talvez porque essa época coincidiu justamente com o período em que comecei a viver de desenho e passei a me dedicar (e ousar) muito mais.

Mas depois de alguns anos, resolvi desenhar uma nova história pra ela, eu já havia feito algumas, mas todas em um fanzine que eu desenhava na época do colégio. Foi um período bastante confuso da minha vida e acredito já ter falado sobre isso na entrada anterior do livro das sombras. A música foi uma constante naquele período e era muito comum me ver sempre com fones de ouvido totalmente introspectivo e perdido nos meus pensamentos, e assim foi por muito tempo. Foi nessa época que ouvi o álbum The Winter Wake do Elvenking e além dele, num período muito curto de tempo saiu outro álbum de uma banda que gosto bastante – Megadeth – United Abominations, com uma música em específico que contava coma participação da cantora que inspirou o primeiro desenho que fiz da Leona na vida – Cristina Scabbia. 🧛🏻‍♀️🎙️

Então, saiu o clipe a Tout le Monde com trechos cantados pela Scabbia, e aquele estilo capa ao vento com um corset deu um estalo na minha mente e comecei a pesquisar mais sobre as Tendências de figurino das cantoras de várias bandas de metal da época, como Tarja Turunen e Vibeke Stene. Comecei pensando em um vestido que deixasse as pernas dela livres para mais mobilidade e ainda assim tivesse o mesmo efeito que tinha visto no clipe. A camisa preta sob o corset e peças que seriam quase como “mangas compridas” independentes amarradas por uma tira. As cores que meio que foram o tendenciosas, pois sempre gostei de vermelho e preto e acabaram sendo as bases pro vestido.
