”The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl” originated from people’s worship of natural celestial phenomena, and later developed into the Qixi Festival since the Han Dynasty. It has also been celebrated as the Tanabata festival in Japan and the Chilseok festival in Korea. In ancient times, women would make wishes to the stars of Vega and Altair in the sky during the festival, hoping to have a wise mind, dexterous hand (in embroidery and other household tasks), and a good marriage. 

On the seventh day of the seventh month of the year, people gaze to the sky to look for Vega and Altair shining in the Milky Way, while a third star forms a symbolic bridge between the two stars. It was said that if it rains on this day that it was caused by a river sweeping away the magpie bridge or that the rain is the tears of the separated couple. Based on the legend of a flock of magpies forming a bridge to reunite the couple, a pair of magpies came to symbolize conjugal happiness and faithfulness.

This specific telling of the tale comes from the Japanese folklore of Tanabata, brought to Japan from China in the 8th century: Orihime, (Weaving Princess) daughter of the Tentei (The Universe itself), wove beautiful clothes by the bank of the Amanogawa (Milky Way, literally "heavenly river"). Her father loved the cloth that she wove and so she worked very hard every day to weave it. However, Orihime was sad that because of her hard work she could never meet and fall in love with anyone. Concerned about his daughter, Tentei arranged for her to meet Hikoboshi (Cowman/Cowherd Star, or literally Boy Star) who lived and worked on the other side of the Amanogawa. When the two met, they fell instantly in love with each other and married shortly thereafter. However, once married, Orihime would no longer weave cloth for Tentei and Hikoboshi allowed his cows to stray all over Heaven. In anger, Tentei separated the two lovers across the Amanogawa and forbade them to meet. Orihime became despondent at the loss of her husband and asked her father to let them meet again. Tentei was moved by his daughter's tears and allowed the two to meet on the 7th day of the 7th month if she worked hard and finished her weaving. The first time they tried to meet, however, they found that they could not cross the river because there was no bridge. Orihime cried so much that a flock of magpies came and promised to make a bridge with their wings so that she could cross the river. It is said that if it rains on Tanabata, the magpies cannot come because of the rise of the river and the two lovers must wait until another year to meet. The rain of this day is called "The tears of Orihime and Hikoboshi".

And here we have Bucky! I think this audio is the one that is the most loosely inspired by the folklore, but it really spoke to me, a story about coming together for just one day and making that day count is a plot point that's been used the world over. Whether or not that trope came from this folktale or not, it's very cool to me that a myth and legend from literal thousands of years ago can be related to today, and I kind of wanted to represent that here! Timeline-wise with this story, I'm thinking that it's inbetween the end of Endgame and Falcon and the Winter Soldier (mostly because I haven't watched FatWS yet lol). Bucky's had a lot of stuff to work out with still recovering from Hydra and then you know, getting snapped and all and then what happened with Steve (something I ordinarily vehemently deny as being a good story choice, but here it works), so I feel like it would make sense that he'd go MIA for a while trying to work on himself. Also, this audio is shorter than most, but I feel like it's pretty succinct, and I gotta tell myself that I don't have to crank out almost 30 minute audios every time I do a NSFW audio lol.
