~Audio Transcript Below~
Thor: There you are! I was wondering where you ran off to. Stark and Barton were making bets that you’d gotten sick of us and had already left, but I knew better.
The view’s lovely, isn’t it? *chuckles* Well...it’s no Asgard….*softly* but it’ll do fine….
Have you enjoyed today? Eaten enough? I’m sure they’ll be enough leftovers to feed an entire village, even after we’ve all had our fill.
*chuckles*
You know….I hadn’t really heard of this….Midgardian tradition of Thanksgiving until my first year with Jane. I mean, the concept isn’t entirely foreign to me or other Asgardians….except perhaps the uh…..genocide of native people’s part.
Not to say that what its evolved into isn’t good, the giving thanks for the good things that we have in life. It reminds people that they aren’t alone, that even in the darkest times there are some things that are worth celebrating. Being thankful and humble are good traits.
*pause*
Asgardians? Well….those of Midgard have, maybe more ‘official’ Holidays and Festivals than Asgardians do, and….uh….they have more variety than those of my people. *chuckles* a lot of our celebrations involve feasts and blessings. The closest thing I can even compare it to is probably Winternights?
Winternights, as the name suggests, is the beginning of the winter seasons. We usually have remembrances of the dead and one’s ancestors during the feast. It’s uh--*chuckles* More of a ceremony of wild abandon, and it marks the beginning of the Wild Hunt, which is the winter hunting season. The hunting lasts all through until Walpurgisnacht. Oh that? That is to celebrate the sacrifices that my Father Odin made at the Life Tree, Yggdrasil. They’re about…..six months apart for us, something like that?
To be fair, that’s more like Midgard All Hallow’s Eve when you think about it, but there is a Harvest Festival before Winternights called Mabon, but most people hold off on that celebration until Winternights anyway. A lot of mead is made and drunk during those nights.
I miss it, sometimes…..the same as anyone who goes to another place…...nearly everyone gets homesick…...even gods aren’t immune to that.
*chuckles* Yes, of course….a celebration wasn’t a real celebration until Loki tried to scheme something. Festivals were perfect times for him to flex his godly title. He’s not the trickster god for nothing, you know.
Oh, he’s done everything you can possibly think of, from flooding the great hall with all sorts of dangerous animals to enchanting the legs of all the festival goers so that they couldn’t stop dancing to organizing an archery contest where if you don’t hit the target in the exact right way, it fires arrows back at you--which to be fair with a bunch of drunken Asgardians was quite funny--even….simple sleight of hand games that would drive everyone insane because it would get to the point where we would bind his hands and he still somehow could do it.
Never a dull moment really, our festivals, with Loki around.
*pause*
Of course I miss him, he’s my brother…..but…..well….don’t allow me to bring down the mood when we’re supposed to be celebrating!
*pause*
Ah yes, Jane told me about that part…..you know….where you go around and are supposed to talk about what you’re thankful for?
So what about you? What are you thankful for?
*pause*
Those are all mighty things to be grateful for. You truly are a humble soul.
And me? Well….I’m thankful to be alive. With who I am and what I do with the Avengers and everything that’s happened at home…..I’m glad to still be here. A little morbid, I know, but even after all of the things that’s gone on…...I’m just glad to be here….still breathing….still fighting….still living.
That’s with help from you, as well. *chuckles* How could I not mention that?
I’m thankful for you.
*pause* *chuckles*
No, I’m not kidding.
*Pause*
I, Thor Odinson, god of Thunder, mightiest of all the Aseir, so solemnly swear upon pain of death, that I could not be more thankful for you if I tried.
You, have always been there for me, as long as we’ve known one another, which is something….that I’m not quite used to from Migardians. Not to say that you’re a lot who abandons people…...I’ve just…..encountered those who are not quite so sincere, or…..they see me as only an Avenger…..a hero….something to be worshipped. Not a person….but an idea…..an ideal…...
To be fair, that was something I wanted once….long ago…..but now…...I realize it’s not about that….I don’t want or need it.
But I digress. This Holiday, I’m thankful for food, for friends, for life…..and for you. It’s not an easy life to live, even when you’re not in the thick of it. While yes, there have been others, the Avengers, who have been there for me during it…..but you’re something special. You’ve been there for me afterwards, when the adrenaline isn’t high and the gravity of what’s happened falls. Sometimes that’s a far more difficult position to be, and yet, you’re still always there.
It’s also nice to be with you in these sort of situations too….where the imminent threat to your world hasn’t been thwarted within the past 24 hours and everyone is still scrambling…..it’s nice to breathe…..don’t get too much of that nowadays.
Don’t be silly. I see the Avengers and other heroes more often than I need to. I’m content to be right here, with you, on this lovely Holiday. Thank you.
