Dev Log 42

Hey guys, welcome to dev log 42.

I've had a very productive couple of weeks once again, with my efforts being split between a few different tasks this time.

First, the UI work that I showed you in the last dev log is now complete, with all of the bugs (hopefully) ironed out. Unfortunately, I've discovered that old saves will probably stop working. I spent a good amount of time trying to remedy this issue, but it seems that it's not actually being cause by the new UI, rather it's a consequence of updating the version of ren'py the game runs on, so there's nothing I can do about it I'm afraid. Fortunately, with the nature of Cosy Cafe being a linear story, it probably shouldn't matter much, as you can simply skip to any update from the start, but I just wanted to let you all know that it's coming.

Next, I spent a lot of time working on a new map. As you can probably tell in the images attached to this post, it's the back of the cafe! That should be all of the map work needed for this update, but I wanted to really get it right, as it will feature heavily in a lot of future content.

Finally, I have, of course, been rendering. I've finished another 250 renders, including some very time consuming and technically challenging ones - believe it or not, setting up and posing the painting render attached took over 45 minutes, and I've had to do dozens like that this update! Fortunately, I've mostly finished with that now, and the rest of the rendering for this update should be pretty straightforward.

So, with all of that being said, and most of the more technical aspects of the update out of the way, I'm finally in a position where I think I can estimate a release date:- Mid December. Of course, as usual, if unforeseen issues crop up it may flex a bit, but knowing what I have left to do, I think that should be very doable.

As always, I'll speak to you all in a couple of weeks, though I probably won't have much more to report than "I'm still alive, and I'm still grinding through the renders!" - so until then, thank you all for your support!

So are we going to find out who stole the ticket book in the next update or do we get to be kept in suspense a little longer ?

Glad to see chances to play the next update before the new year starts. I'm really happy with the way the relationships between the girls and the MC is developing. Hoping for some action with Hannah though ;)

Cosy, I do some work in Daz sometimes, and the trick I found may help you too. If I'm doing a scene with many characters, I'll often render the left side and right side separately before joining them in Photoshop. Loading only half the figures in each more than doubles the render speed of each. Obviously, more complexity means longer renders, but you can also reach a point where your vram can't hold everything at once. When that happens, the entire render process is offloaded to your CPU, and it will take several eternities.

if your going with a AMD processor i'd go with a AMD video card to

If they can start growing their own ingredients that's a money saver. Having Lucy be in charge of the garden would be a great thing for her. Looking at the Storage Room picture, I'm curious how much the Princess will complain before she helps out. Nice to see them all working together though. Warm feelings in the tum tum.

Currently running a 13700k with a RTX4080. However, I want to have a spare PC capable of rendering just in case my main one ever dies - I don't want to be out of action for too long. So some time next year, when the components come out, I'm probably gonna go all out and get a RTX5090 and an AMD 9950X3D (assuming they do well in benchmarks and reviews). Then I'll make my current PC my spare and upgrade to all of the newest Honey Select graphics mods on the new one, since the ones I'm using currently are a couple of years out of date. Edit: Also, to add a bit of context, with my current rig that back shot of the cafe with all of the grass and cafe interior displayed, it runs at about 2 fps. That's not the end of the world, since I can just turn the grass off while I work and get it up to about 12-14, but another scene it really struggled with was the council meeting. Rendering all of those characters at the same time really killed it.

What rig are you using for the rendering?

Anders

Haha, you're right. And the back wall of the kitchen is red instead of white - fortunately that's just a shot I took while working on the map, not a render from the game.

we finally see how lucy got in, the back entrance is clearly missing XD

Same here, i like to sometimes go from the start. To review the story. Can't wait to this christmass gift;)

Every few updates I like to start from the beginning...I enjoy seeing the growth of the characters and story, really well done, and a big reason why it's my favorite vn! I'm also excited to try the new UI . Thanks again Cosy for all the hard work!!

Looking forward to being able to see all the hard work you've put into it. I don't mind starting a new game either since I love the story.
