Universe League EP 8 Reaction

More performances! Jaw drop at this elimination 😳😳
lowkey just wanted you to skim through ep.9 coz there's nothing much in there and go straight to ep. 10 or react to their dance practice since the live performance really has bad camera work

Pretty much obvious who the final lineup for each group would be, so yeah, hehe

Bringing up Jian Fan — if Jiang Fan had been in Rhythm and ended up in Bench, there could have been Li Zhinuo (the black-haired in DHTB) and Xie Yuxin (the one wearing the sweater vest in Rollercoaster) who could match his dancing style. Maybe it's because they are training under the same agency in China.
Also, the fact that Jiang Fan wanted to join Team Rhythm during the Draft Pick.

Totally agree about Team Beat. Most of their appeal was the songs not the contestants themselves. I was cheering for Team Beat every round but that's because I'm a huge fan of Woongi, Yuito, Hyo Tae, and Kairi and the songs were fire. Somehow since they kept losing good players they ended up with a lack of good performers though like you said they got better over time.

Hii. if its not any bother, (and if ever you decide to skip the half part of the ep.9 😅) can you also react on the practice video of these performances? especially on the Seven Stage.
As you have mentioned the choreo of Don't Hit the Brakes is great (which also happened to be my fav performance of all) I would like to hear your thoughts abt it.
Thank youuu!! love love your reactions 😊😊😊

JL would have also slayed it, considering how versatile he is.

I do agree. I also want JL to try to do a genre like Groove, just to see how it goes.

maybe just watch the selection part and skip the recap at the end? the selection part still drags a bit, but it does complete the experience + the trainees do get to say heartwarming (albeit short) speeches. still worth a watch i think. the selection part is about an hour long! anything beyond the 1:10:23 mark is basically just a shot of the final teams standing around the trophy plus a highlight montage of past clips for each member. that should be pretty safe to skip. no preview or anything new at the end of the episode either!

yea that would’ve been a good opportunity. also because they’ve done many softer concepts already. would’ve been great to see a more epic choreo at one point

ahh ya i don’t mind just doing the main part and forego the recap stuff

should i skip and just go to the finale? lol

sigh… so many talents will be wasted. they kinda did the same with Build Up. we wanted certain idols to form the final band but they switched to group vs group like here. in the end, the fans didn’t like it and just didn’t seem to support the winners.

i agree. while shuaibo has had a big character development here from boys planet (or was not evil edited), he is still quite behind many of the front runners talent-wise

oh my head is spinning. why is the system like that 😭 makes me worried about the final line up
seth james
2025-04-09 06:54:03 +0000 UTC
ya this voting system is flawedddd. they needed elimination episodes on their own so they could gather votes properly. here they combined both performances and elimination round in one ep 😞
seth james
2025-04-09 06:51:29 +0000 UTC
it does seem that they were covering more trainees in the beginning and then they saw who were polling better and just stuck to those guys and left the rest out of the edits 😭

I actually saw a post saying it would be nice to see Groove perform with heavy choreography. They had Juwon, Hani, Hanseo, and Kyungho at once. They also want to know if they are as stable as they have shown so far, given the heavy choreography.
Hani would’ve still slayed, tho. (I just really love him as a Baekhyun-biased lol.)

kinda want you to just watch the main part of ep 9 and go to the final ep, since ep 9 was mostly filler (if it won't be too much for you, of course!) bc the selection part of ep 9 was probably just like around an hour or so? and the remaining are recaps.

next episode doesn't have much content imo. the main part is the directors choosing which seven members to take for their team to the finals (combination of individual ranking + group standing + director picks). lots of repeat footage from the older episodes as well--basically just highlighting the players chosen

I always shake my head when I see that JL is not even Top 7 onsite. Not being the top trainee in TG or TR onsite for JL and Park Han always made me roll my eyes.

watching Butterlfy makes me teary everytime... so heartfelt and celebratory and beautiful ㅠㅠ props to Changsub for giving a chance to perform to 12 out of 14 trainees. as you said, even though the goal is to debut, having as much exposure as possible is sooo helpful for their future careers

Steven's votes mostly came from overseas. He does have a Korean fan base but he's mostly considered Australian in Korea. They released onsite scores and JL and Steven only come in the middle of the pack onsite. It's something I've noticed in other idols who are Korean and then a different nationality too. Despite being ethnically Korean they are considered a foreign idol.
These votes are based off the Intercept round. You'll notice in the votes shown at the end of this episode Zenzen and Li Zhinuo rise a lot.

1:11:00 Anyul was literally 14 through most of the show, depending on when this stage was filmed, I believe he was still 14 or just turned 15. So you were right lol. He was born January 2nd, 2010 (he's younger than Daisuke by 2 weeks). But I think this is like his 3rd or 4th competition show since he's competed on a few trot shows before. He is the youngest contestant on this show.
I Think with Team Beat, EL Capitxn did well with showing a wide range of music he can produce, which is good advertisement for himself BUT it also gave Team Beat the opportunity to try out different concepts and styles and we get to see who shines the most in which concept. It's unfortunate they got the short end of the stick when it came to the show's set up with the yellow cards and trading so they lost a bunch of players with great potential.
Also, it may just be me but "Don't Hit The Brakes" reminds me of NCT 127's Cherry Bomb, especially the bridge to the end.

There will be no performances to get the top 21 anymore. It will be a combination of group standings, individual rankings and directors picks.

i like members from every group too, but they said before the show even started that it's a team competition. The winning team debuts, not by individual votes like the usual svs. So, if Team Groove wins, all the members will automatically debut.

Hey, Jeff. The next episode is based on voting only. No peformances - basically whole episode of selecting the final players one by one. There is a tiny little twist I will not reveal but yeah it is nothing extra but it is there. (The M in P.R.I.S.M.)
The final 21 are selected based on fan votes and director choices. (I will explain it bcs I have seen several reactions of people being confused watching the episode.)
- Taking all of the points from all previous missions the teams are ranked 1-3.
-> 1st place has 5 top players selected by voting and 2 remaining are selected by directors
-> 2nd place has 3 top players selected by voting and 4 remaining ones selected by director
-> 3rd place has 1 top player selected by voting and 6 remaining ones are selected by directors
After this selection takes place the show basically sums up the journey of each of the finalist. So yeah, good portion of the episode is just like.. forced suspense and then there is a chunk at the end that just features footage you have already seen.

Definitely an interest choice of voting, considering the latest performance does not reflect in the online voting. Not sure what to think of that, seems a bit crazy imo. Also I don't know why, but I have just not been particularly impressed with Zhang Shuaibo in any of his performances, but I get he's really popular.

To me, all survival shows do similar things when it comes to editing and creating a storyline, some just hide it better. I think with all survival shows, you're going to get good edits and you're going to get evil edits. Yes this is supposed to be a "reality" show but the producers are going to want to create whatever stories they want for the sake of entertainment and keep viewers watching (like how they stretched out the whole Woongki and Kyungho beef for the first half of the show and then semi resolved it and don't bring it up again). It sucks, especially when they leave out crucial parts of scenarios or make a situation a lot bigger than it actually was and it potentially puts certain trainees in bad positions where it could affect their career outside the show. This is kinda why I like watching the show a few times with different reactors because everyone tend to point out different things they notice in different scenarios and it helps me think of what they're showing in a different light.
But the more I watch Universe League the more I noice that they may not blatantly edit certain trainees to be "evil" as much but they do seem to have a tendency to completely cut out certain trainees to the point you forget they're on the team or in the show.

With the whole getting meat as a prize thing, I do think your guess is right to a degree, especially in smaller companies because there have been plenty to stories from idols who talked about not being able to afford decent meals. I remeber a member of Stellar talking about how there were times when they were only able to afford 1 boxed lunch to split amongst all their members. But I also think it's something the group and company had used as a celebratory prize so they're probably used to saving the fancy meats for special occasions even when they can afford it. Because we even see idols from bigger companies or well established group fight to the death in games for beef. Like, BTS and Seventeen don't play around when food is on the line.

Another note on the votes: please note that the global votes are not being reflected In real time... the online votes used for this round was the voting period during the last mission. So it doesn't matter if they performed or not, people have already voted even before knowing what happened to this new mission.
I agree that osite votes can be biased but the way sbs had heir instructions for the online votes didn't make sense too huhu.
This is why i feel so frustrated about this show since it has big potential to be a great show but the voting rules (somewhat the system too) in all aspect is the loophole.
SBS wanted to try a different approach, it was entertaining at some point yes, but they didn't manage to execute the system well.
There were no fixed rules. We were saying before that this show felt like they are finalizing the rules of the show as we go by hahaha

Still I could say that all trainees were still deserving a chance of the debut its just their actual performance differ due to their state on the stage like nervousness. Some definitely had more experience than the others which showed on their live performances. What I liked about the show is they emphasized the synergy of the team and teamwork and also mentors were mentoring LOL

there were issues with the voting that even the fans of the show were mad about the mechanics because the votes gathered are applied late to each round which does not reflect the fan's sentiments real time. Also the first round prioritized on site votings and they just added global votes later on which really changed rankings because the player favorites by on site voters and global viewers were different.

For Groove, i think it was not about who is not doing well, i think it was more like having most of the members perform on stage. between the 3 teams groove had more different members performing in both songs, 12 out of 14 went on stage.
since hanseo and heejun already performed in unit 1, they added those who are not yet performing any song.
but i swear i thought i hated mnet editing but when i was watching this show hahaha i think sbs is at par with mnet with their editing but in different fonts hahaha
