Boys Planet EP 1 Reaction

Honestly... I did not expect for this pilot to be this good 😳 Less drama and more talent?? Like wow, is this still Mnet??

PS. I talk about the reasoning behind the change in tiers for survival show reactions so if you want to skip that part and go straight to the show, fast-forward to about 5 mins in :)

I don't know what Mnet does for their survival shows but one thing I've noticed in the Chinese Shows like Youth With You and Idol Producer, they had teachers outside of the celebrity mentors. There were several instances where you can see or hear the trainees talking to a "teacher" in the background or just off camera that wasn't the mentor. So the mentors come in and look over everything and give some tips and work with them a bit, but weren't necessarily the ones teaching. I don't know if Mnet did that though. I'd like to think the mentors do more than whats shown and didn't just straight up yell at them 24/7 but there's a 99% chance Mnet edited the footage to only show them getting ripped apart for dramatic purposes. Also yes, the whole K vs G group thing is stupid and unnecessary since aren't we creating a group with a combination of Korean and global members? Plus you can tell from a lot of the extra and behind the scenes footage that a lot of the trainees know eachother and get along very well regardless of whether they're Korean or Global. But ofcourse, Mnet needs some kind of dramatic narrative to play off of so they're basically forcing this whole K vs G group scenario in the beginning. 2:21:13 ish, I totally agree with you on the singing part. I think in the past few years, the focus for idols seems to have shifted to them being more dance/ performance centric vs singers. Like back in the early 2000s when Kpop was just rising, the focus was more on idols being singers and the dancing seemed more like an addition. But as we've seen in more recent years, the level of dance these idols are expected to do are much more advanced than ever before. I think in a way, from a performance aspect, the company can kind of see it as, "You can hide weaker vocals with a backtrack but you can't hide bad dancing" Which is too bad, there are plenty of singers out there who are amazing but it seems like if they aren't strong dancers, they may get passed over for someone else with ok singing but great dancing. Anyways, as much as I love seeing the crazy level of dancing idols can accomplish today, I do fully agree with the mentors where they are still training to be singers and therefore have to learn to sing.

As a french Canadian I can say with confidence that for someone who claims they haven't spoken french for 2 years (He said it in his french introduction) Matthew is very impressive!

Strawberry_177

WHATTT THEYRE NOT A TWO YEAR GROUP?

gen a *

As someone who’s born and raised in Montreal I could tell right away that Matthew isn’t from Montreal based on his French since majority of kids are obliged to attend francophone schools from primary to high school. Montreal’s French speaking population is over 50%, but nowadays most ppl are bilingual. Honestly I don’t even use my French that much unless is necessary for school and work. However I was quite impressed with the amount of French Matthew spoke! Because I know that a lot of Canadians who have learned French in school in other provinces don’t really retain the language.

juls

bonjour camille val , sait tu ou je peux regarder l'emission peak time en streaming ou en direct ?

melina malfoy

the bs is just more done behinde the camera, apprently the group team tokyo that performed shine had 6 members that praticed togther but 1 hour to them performing iit became 3. They had to learn a re arranged dance and vocal from 6 members to 3 members and one of the remaing 3 was fluent in korean. mnet did not give us an explantaion and the other 3 members that did not perform are still in the show and can be voted for although we did not see them perform

Divine Oladejo

Same!! Love idol producer definitely my favorite of the youth with you series

Jana Bcles

nvm it looks like it may be on viki! i will check then! thanks!

seth james

do u know where i might be able to watch it in full episodes on the 15th? i looked at the youtube previews and there are no translations :(

seth james

Yesyesyes!! For me Idol Producer will always be my top tier survival show ♡ Vocal performances were soo beautiful and trainees really got to show their skills

KayB Yam

hi jeff! there is a new survival show starting on february 15th called peak time which i think would be interesting to watch with you. It highlights different "not very popular" boygroups like BAE173 or Kingdom. I found this description: Peak Time wants to provide opportunities to groups that have been hit hard by the pandemic, are not as well-known due to taking long breaks or experiencing frequent member changes, have disbanded or recently debuted and need a boost of publicity, or want to showcase their talents to the rest of the world. It is the first idol audition show to have teams competing The judges are Mino from WINNER, Tiffany from SNSD, Kyhyun from SuperJunior, and Jay Park, among others.

Camylle Val

Just a little suggestion from me, but Jeff you might like Youth with you season 1, it's a survival show and it's presented by Lay. There's also less drama and I think they might be more vocal oriented. Maybe you could check it out after this whole Boys Planet done. But even if you couldn't it's okay. No pressure here, just want to tell you about it. 😁☺️ Peace

and Ichan was in Iland under the name Jaebom

Even

Probably, he looks competent but he just played a little bit of something usually learned when you're at an intermediate level. I suspect the whole "genius" thing is Mnet encouraging him to play up his background. That said, he'll have a better sense of correct pitch than others and it'll be interesting to see whether he can arrange music (he would have studied some music theory).

Michael Choi

Oh god so if Hui makes it he won't be in pentagon?

czennieluvie

ahh didn’t know there was a difference between the two but that makes sense! probably compares to something like an education degree holder with a major in theatre and someone who actually went to a performing arts school with a specific focus.

seth james

here's one of the gp999 contestants sharing her experience in case you're curious: https://youtu.be/mKM4KzUogJM i watch a lot of mnet shows because they know how to make entertaining tv. but a lot of what we see from watching the episodes alone is carefully manipulated. sure, a super talented trainee would probably nail any song mnet assigns to them. but the reality is that some are going to get songs that dont flatter them/dont suit their range. i notice that you sometimes comment on how the trainees picked the wrong thing to compete with. but if they couldnt choose what to compete with, that changes it, u know? ALSO! Xu Ziyin wasn't the only contestant that spoke out. A lot of the Chinese girls spilled the tea afterward cause by and large, they were painted as "not talented enough to be this mean and arrogant" in GP999. Here's a longer video detailing ways Mnet manipulated the show without outright manipulating the votes and ranking: https://youtu.be/cG_f-Ew2FrE

Gin To

Btw, so you can properly appreciate the violinist's skills... he's probably not a talented musician. Music education majors focus on teaching, which is very important, but they are usually not as skilled as performance majors. Even his playing and violin ($10k is decent but not sufficient) indicate this-- levels below what you should expect for a serious performer. However, I think this background will help him and it's smart for him to pursue a path where his talents may be better suited.

Michael Choi

HANBIN AND MATTHEW ARE ADORABLE AND NEED TO DEBUT TOGETHER!!! AS ALWAYS, great commentary jeff, love love this reaction (my first time watching a survival show other than ILAND (for my boys ENHA:))) and im loving the vibes of it so far!! Excited for the next ep!!

Anika Bhattacharya

big agree on how unnecessary the whole K group vs G group thing is! Ultimately this show is gonna debut a TEAM so creating this drama makes zero sense on mnet's part. It's not even an editing thing since they set the mood from the start with that early signal song benefit so it's very much an intentional thing which is a shame.

Rein

i wonder tho if this is like american idol where the show has a list of songs for the trainees to pick from. like they pick their top 3 from the list and then mnet eventually picks from their choices. this also tends to happen for copyright reasons cause for example a lot of SM song by that one producer now need a license to be performed live.

seth james

I also think this shows the "drama" aspect because I feel like so many contestants did so much better in the promo stuff, and when the auditions came I think certain people were given a disservice.

Mattie H.

WOW what a good start. Been dying to watch this since you’ve.mentioned it before. Can’t wait for the rest 🤍🤍 my biases so far are Marrhew & Han bin 🤩🤩

joannatanecaa

idk if you know this already or not, but the song choices are picked/vetted by mnet. last season w gp999, some of the contestants revealed afterwards that mnet picked their songs for them to either create drama or to manipulate their rankings. that would explain why so many contestants chose songs choreographed by choi youngjun. and the fact that a group there performed shine by pentagon.

Gin To

WHATTT?? that is a game changer!!

seth james

Since we're rooting for Canadians, Brian from Yuehua G-group (the one on the very right, who they said is handsome) is also Canadian! I also read somewhere that Matthew is from Vancouver

emma

I need matthew and hanbin to debut toguether, I was really hype about BP and I love it so far, and I'm already attached to so many trainees and there are only 9 spots I'm worried....

Irving

Idk if you already know, but the final lineup will not have a fixed temporary contract, but a permanent one.

Nara

if you are interested there are lots of videos of sung hanbin waacking on twitter !!

Maddie Ash

me too! idk how well they’ll do on this show vs their past performances, but i think you’ll like yedam as a dancer!

Isabella N.

can’t wait to see them perform!

seth james

right?? mnet knows how to trap us cause i’m right here thinking about photocards 🧍🏻

seth james

Keita was also on YG Treasure Box. Haruto and Yedam (one of the K group trainees who hasn’t performed yet) were on LOUD, and they were some of my faves out of the eliminated contestants

Isabella N.

If Hanbin and Matthew don’t debut together my heart will break 😭 this was such a set up for us to fall in love with them 🤣

Jana Bcles

yess the pacing was so good! i was surprised i wasn’t exhausted by the end of this 😂 and yes hui crying 🥺😭

seth james

awkwardness honestly can be very charming and you never know he might surprise us and improve leaps and bounds throughout the season! 🥳

seth james

right?? it’s super exciting!

seth james

viki ☺️

seth james

I really love the pacing of the show, enjoyed the first episode a lot! Especially compared to GP999. And so happy to see familiar faces like Keita, Haruto (he improved so much since LOUD, so proud of him!) and of course Hui. It broke my heart when he started to tearing up.

Mado

I'm so glad I could watch this with you Jeff ! As an avid watcher of survival shows, this is definitely my favorite pilot so far ! The only thing that's kinda pissing me off is that K group vs G group thingy, especially knowing that they're actually supportive of each others. I've been kinda obsessed with Hanbin even before the show started and his audition totally solidified the fact that I'm rooting for him, this guy is good at everything, in a way he kinda reminds me of Heeseung ? He's got that aura and loveliness to him. I'm also rooting for Haruto as well (glitch mode guy who has ballet training), he's got solid skills and is pretty funny too. I also like Ollie (who took Mark's verse in Kick it) I just feel like protecting him... I also have a few guys I'm keeping my eyes on, I'm waiting for the next episodes to see more of what they're capable of : Ricky, Matthew, Jay, and also Doha (blue blouse guy who did 2PM's My house) his awkwardness made me fall for him !

Eurone

I enjoyed this first episode so much as well! Hoping Mnet keeps the vibe like this and doesn’t go back to evil editing and unnecessarily harsh criticism. I definitely am rooting for Hanbin and Matthew, the besties need to debut together! I actually started watching the show for Kim Jiwoong (he acted in a few web/bl dramas) and I’m excited to see what he’s like as a idol trainee next week (he had like no screen time this week). Also thank you so much for your insights as always! As someone who has no performing experience I LOVE learning about this!

Mari

im quite surprised by the mnet team as well, id like to hope that they're learning that us fans don't care about the bs that they like to do. and to be honest, my expectations weren't high but these performances really impressed me! i went into this without much information except for hui being there and i cant wait to see what comes next and who will debut!

anchor

Hanbin's visual just screams out loud

eli_nhdoaek

I liked girls planet more. I have never seen a full episode of Produce tough so maybe I don't have to much of an opinion. I would recommend you watch gp if you have time or at least some of the performances. I could recommend you some of my favorite if you want to

Elina

Also, just noticed, there's lots of audition songs by SM artists HAHA and I loved it!

eve_ss

I like Hanbin and Matthew too!! I really do hope they debut together!! Both Kick It performances were good as well! I'm so amazed they're all so good in dancing! Rush Hour performance was my fave so far 💗 Oh btw, just to share, Trainees Jay Chang (Rush Hour) and Anthonny (Glitch Mode) are both partly/half Filipino! Kababayan 💪🏻

eve_ss

hi jeff!! i enjoyed the whole video lmfao and btw may i know where are u watching the whole episode with eng subs? thank u in advance!!

E G

lol so true 😂 i didn’t watch gp999 so do u think it’s a good thing that it’s more like produce and less like gp999? or vice versa?

seth james

Boys planet is so far looking more like Produce and less like it’s counterpart

Elina

enjoy! ☺️

seth james

no problem! ☺️

seth james

i really appreciate you make this show to 5$ tier! thank you so much jeff

lyly

I was EAGERLY waiting for this 😭😭. Gonna buy coffee rn and thoroughly enjoy this. Thanks 🤍
