I read a quote from an author a while back (don't remember which one, maybe Kurt Vonnegut?), that was something like, you have to be a sadist to your characters. No matter how sweet they are, it's not an interesting story until they go through difficult challenges. I can't say that I enjoy doing that much (and to be fair, my comics don't engage with anything particularly hard hitting—it's mostly just porn) but I have to admit it makes for better stories.
