When I See All Of You.

In tenderness, you are so soft.
Like your fingers are weightless when they stroke my cheek.
And your lips came straight from the oven when they meet my skin.
Like your fingers will fuse to mine before you let go.
And I'd have to grow more skin to find some you haven't kissed.
I've never actually known a man capable of such tenderness.
Of being so gentle.
And kind.
The first time you held me, I realized, I had no idea what it meant to be held in a warm embrace.
I had no idea there were touches that didn't promise hurt.
But I can see your tenderness.
When you stroke my lip and kiss my cheek,
and look at me like I'm the only other person in the world.
I can see all of you then.
I can see your tenderness.
And past it.
At the other end.
I can see your cruelty too.
In one glance.
I can see both ends of you.
In cruelty, you are so harsh.
Like your fingers are made of stone when you strike against my cheek.
And your lips were made for singing the song that reduces me to nothing.
Like your fingers are trying to cut me on the inside.
And I'd have to grow more skin to find some that doesn't hurt.
I've known many men capable of cruelty.
But no words have ever hurt like yours.
No punches ever broke through the places yours do.
No welts ever burnt through my skin like yours.
When I look at you, I see all of you.
And it hurts so much more to see your cruelty.
Just because I know how gentle you can be.
