Friday, but not really an art preview - a questionnaire

We're having some COVID issues in the office this week and nobody is there today. Everyone is either sick, maybe sick, or staying home to avoid being sick. So instead of the normal art preview, I figured I'd jump in with something different. But I am showing one piece of art. We have a near final cover for Fishing Lessons. Just wrapping up textures and all of that, but this is so close to being done. It's such a great one, really capturing the tone of the game.

So if we aren't previewing art, what are we doing?

I figured I'd take the time to ask everyone here a question or two.

1) What is your favorite thing about the club?
2) What is your least favorite thing about the club?

Feel free to answer one, both or neither. But happy to take this quiet time to see what we're doing right and wrong, and see what we can do to improve things. And don't hold back. I'm here for the hard hitting feedback.

Hope all is well! Enjoy your weekend and if you're up for a new game, check out the dropbox. I just added the files for Forest Sky.

Friday, but not really an art preview - a questionnaire

Comments

I’ve been a member a long time, and few complaints really! I love the games and I’m a huge fan of the postcard games. Final Lightyear was so cool and really digging Hush so far. I guess the one annoyance is that I thought being at the Everything (except RPGs) level would allow me to catch all the little 1-3 card things but sometimes it seems that won’t be the case - like with AdvanceQuest. I may just be misunderstanding, and that might be another small annoyance to register: it would be nice to see a central list of everything that was released for a game and how it was distributed, with a link to order whatever is still available.

NoMoreContinues

I'm on your discard, so I bug you there to get into the secret channel. I also have seen that the tiers have been changed. There is no Everything and RPGs INT. What is the reason?

Matthias Nagy

So I appreciate this club almost more now that I am so busy in my personal life. Knowing that eventually I will get great games that come in the mail is such a great idea, I am so glad I signed up. I also saw the patreon note about the Monday website updates to know when the games will be shipped out- and that made such a huge difference. I saved the link and check each Monday. I noticed your team is really good about making those changes every Monday. Thanks so much! I don’t have any negatives now as I am a new customer but really happy so far.

Allison Mendel

Favourite: supporting button shy and that I eventually receive wallet games and don’t need to worry about KS anymore. Least favourite: it has been mentioned several times by others the lack of communication - not knowing whether this month will have a post to choose a game or not, and not a fan of expansions to a game I don’t have (and is no longer available!). I do still wonder if I’m actually getting the wallet game in the month or not…I understand you’re waiting on components for the game of the month - but what if I don’t want it? Why not send out the request for people to choose with the transparency that the BGOTM is still waiting on parts but here’s the other options and those that don’t want it will choose differently and still get their games without having to make them wait? Overly it feels like information is scattered. I’ve been a member for a while and didn’t even know there were special/secret BGOTMC discord channels within the button shy discord until this thread. I don’t use discord often anyway (as someone else said, I’m old!) but there was no real indication that secret channels for bgotm members existed. The FAQ suggestion someone mentioned is great! which contains the pay by x, choose by y and receive by z and links to the Dropbox, status update and discord and whatever else. Maybe also have a part to download the pnp, or purchase sections, for when the postcard games have finished and people are missing parts they can still complete their game? (For those that want to?)

Natasha Richards

Getting a few new games or mechanics to previous games each month is by far the best part. I find the best part about getting a new game is figuring out the mechanics and reading the rules so I can have that information ready to pick the right game for the social situation that's going on. The wallets offer the best option for me to throw a few in my pocket and hit to road for a day trip or just hang out at the bar. The least favorite thing for me is that I am missing only the Beta Sector pack of the Final Light Year and there isn't a way to purchase it. If I was missing 2 or three packs I would shrug it off, but being so close to a complete set a peeve. The postcard games are great, to slowly watch a game build over the course of a year is my second favorite part about this. I just wish it was easier to get replacements or fill out sets.

Michael Auger

My favorite thing is being a part of a new (to me) gaming community. I joined in March and I love the wallet games. I'm glad I stumbled across Button Shy on my quest to expand my board game collection. My least favorite things have all already been mentioned on here and answered, so I don't feel the need to reiterate. Thank you for requesting this feedback! 🙂

ch_craft_

My favourite thing are the ongoing Postcard Games!

Phillippe Scholten

So far my favorite is the postcard game. I'm hoping to get a full set of hush. Haven't received the second month part yet. Hope it goes on for a while. It's a great morning coffee game.

Steven Bloom

You know what to do my friend! Lol. Seriously...I dearly dearly love you all. I have wanted more of what I mentioned from you guys for a long time.

Todd Cuzzort

My Favorite is access to all the PnP files and testing new games coming. Least Favorite - The Focus on all the KickStarter games makes it seem like the focus is on the Kickstarter and not getting games out in a timely manner. Just feels like BS is in constant catch up mode. I love the products and getting my games each month.

John Ricker

I agree with what another person has said that I struggle to find information about what to expect etc. I have just had my first payment taken (June) but not sure where that equates to getting it and making choices. Some comments say they haven't had April or may yet. I am also new but looking forward to getting my first game!

Natasha Eley

My favorite thing is being able to support a publisher I love and get a bunch of awesome games in the process. A close second is the postcard game. Hush has been fun so far and I love the anticipation of the next month's installment. I did come in part way through Final Lightyear so it never felt wholly mine, so I'm hoping the shorter spans of the upcoming ones reduce that for newer members. I also really like the art previews and the peak behind the scenes at the process. I think my least favorite is getting expansions for games I don't have, though honestly it does not happen often. But I also appreciate how much this crowd has grown over the years and how much work goes into getting these packages out the door every month, so it's a really minor issue. Thank you all, and I hope everyone is feeling better soon.

Wes Urschel

Personal Space was painful. I was so close to it, and things broke apart in a terrible way internally. We lost some team members halfway through and never recovered since it was all ongoing. I'm eternally bummed about it.

Button Shy

Sounds good. Here's hoping you never tell me otherwise because I enjoy not paying attention, just seeing what I get, and not worrying about missing stuff :) I had a run for a while of receiving dupes I had already backed on KS. I just gave up on trying to police for substitutions and would give away a dupe when I got one. Since I stopped backing on KS that problem has basically stopped!

Justin Honold

I love the variety of content and greatly appreciate the work involved in creating the ongoing postcard series. The nine card (or less) games are nice little treats and I always look forward to the wallet game expansions. I think my only real disappointment so far is that the Personal Space digital content was never set up for about half of the game so I wasn’t able to get the full 12 month experience.

Linda

Yep, it's a great note. We need to ramp up the info for new patrons, and post these updates here as well as offsite. I just didn't want to blast everyone once a week with the info, but it's better than not, especially when we're in a delay like the one right now.

Button Shy

Thanks. Some of us newbies don’t know about this link or that this even existed and that’s where the frustration lies. If you made a post on here around the time that the game should be sent out saying that there is delays check this link for more up to date info there would probably be far less people confused and commenting about their confusion surrounding this.

Brad Scalf

See this link. We post it just about every Monday at the site and at Discord: https://buttonshygames.com/pages/bgotmc-status The wallet game for April was delayed. It's due to arrive here in about 2 weeks. It's arriving with the May wallet game as well, so May will ship out right after.

Button Shy

I agree with the above two comments. Love the games that I have ordered with you before joining the Patreon but so far the experience being part of the board game of the month club has been to be frank terrible… there is no clear communication about when we will be getting games it seems sporadic rather than on a schedule (usually within the first couple weeks after the month you pay) My first payment came out in April, then May, now June I have paid for 3 months and not received any games and have had 0 communication about any delays that were happening or when I can even expect my first or any monthly games. The only thing posted in the Patreon is art previews. Now reading your comments on the previous two comments you’re talking about May being out a few weeks into June but you haven’t even sent out April yet ? The last game of the month post that went out was for March in the middle April and since then no post about games of the months…Transparency and communication would be helpful.

Brad Scalf

I replied to the above comment with the similar issue, but wanted to mention it here too. That first wait is forever if we are running behind. You have the time up until your first payment goes in, then the clock starts going and if we're behind it keeps going. Meanwhile, everyone else is still getting the February and March packages that were delayed. Once June comes, it'll all be very close to monthly.

Button Shy

It’s hard to explain, but you will see packages about every month after your first arrives. The may package will be out a few weeks after June and July a little after that. Sometimes we see delays and then things hit in waves. But you’ll always see all of your packages.

Button Shy

My favorite thing about the club is supporting Button Shy and (eventually) getting game goodies in the mail. My least favorite part of the club is the confusion about where we're at with distribution. Like Brian above, I joined in March (paid April 1) and all I have after three months payment is this Hush starter package that I can't do anything with. I'll stick it out. I didn't know about the dashboard on the website until I saw it in the comments. I read the Patreon feed, but I don't have time to participate in Discord. So I'd love to see your weekly dashboard updates dropped in the Patreon feed along with all the gorgeous Friday art previews. Thanks for soliciting feedback!

Carol Ullmann

So just to be totally honest... my least favorite is so far just my general experience - I signed up in March as a $20 member, so my first Patreon payment came out on April 1st. I've now had that payment, May's payment, and June's payment a couple days ago, and the only thing I have to show for it is the Hush starter, which I can't even play since it doesn't include everything you need to play. And the survey for what you even want to receive for April's BGOTM hasn't even happened yet. What I wanted was a board game of the >month< club, what I'm appearing to get is a board game of the "every few months or whenever" club. I'm continuing to be patient for the moment, but I can't see lasting much longer if I'm not being delivered what was promised at my level.

Brian N.

Favorite: I enjoy seeing new ideas for games and how you can design in just 18 cards. Least Favorite: I don't enjoy the current setup of using Patreon as form of communication...did the monthly game survey come out already? did I miss it? are they behind? what's happening? (that being said since I don't know how to make it better, I just go with the flow and assume something will be coming, and hopefully it's something I'm interested in)

Eli Salzgeber

Favorite -- I'm going to say a combination of getting wallet game expansions (so I don't have to buy them separately; they're paid for here) and the smaller additional games that there's often no other way to get besides joining the club. Least Favorite -- Two possibilities come to mind here, too. (1) The non-solo material. I know you've got to cover all player counts and not everything can or necessarily should have solo. Still, it is less than ideal to get stuff I'm not going to use, but I view it as a necessary part of getting the content I do want. (2) The postcard games, because so many of them haven't gone over well with me for one reason or another. Early on, it was lack of solo. More recently, they had solo, so I think it's just something about the specific games. I haven't tried TFLY or Hush yet though to comment on them, and they could be hits for me. But with so many misses, I feel like this is even more of a thing I just have to put up with to get what I really want. I'm not sure I'd want to give them up, but I wish I liked them more than I do, and I'm not sure I can say what would make that happen. That said, I want to note that if I didn't like the club or thought I didn't get sufficient value out of it, I would have left long ago. I joined up in January 2017 going by my postcards, and I'm still here 5,5 years later. I think that says something about the club.

James M.

At your level, ignore Kickstarter unless we tell you otherwise. That's also improved with the new levels. All of them should always ignore Kickstarter. The one exception was the extra content for Battlecrest.

Button Shy

Favorite: the cool 9 card games that get mixed in with the wallets, and the port card games. Least Favorite: gotta catch them all!

Alexander Sisco

Favorite: playing and supporting the games of a novel small business. Least favorite: navigating the Patreon vs. Kickstarter, "which way do I order?" question (getting easier since I simply quit even looking at Button Shy Kickstarters).

Justin Honold

Least favorite: That not all games are released PNP :P

Martín Borda

Favorite: the games, the community and the Button Shy team!

Martín Borda

Funny you say this, I received an email with 3 of those style games today. :)

Button Shy

Just catching up here after picking up my kids at school. Lots of great comments, keep em coming. :)

Button Shy

Favorite: The innovative and interesting games Least favorite: Digital content is never available when packages arrive. I'm looking at you Flipuzzle rules.

Ezra

I can do Discord but I rather not. Maybe I’m old? I’m in my thirties and I feel old. I don’t have the patience to look through Discord or wait for someone to help me. I like the artwork, unique theme, and diversity in the buttonshy games. I wish there was a static website where there is an FAQ, updated rulebook pdf. I use BGG more but I also really like the layout of Stonemaier’s website. If an updated FAQ google word document could be saved in the dropbox that might be a compromise. Also, I wish the dropbox link was pinned somehow because I usually have to search through emails or updates to find the link. Stay safe and hydrated! Hopefully the monkey pox wont come, but since the WHO said there’s nothing to worry about it must mean we should.

Alaena

I am in the US and top tier supporter. I love being able to support small businesses. I enjoy the postcard games but wish the rules were a bit clearer. Seems they always need work. I like all the wallet games and the variety of them.

Deborah Gard

Never got into the Postcard games and so that would have been a down for me before the Tier change (alongside the RPG being US only). Now I have switched Tiers, getting a new set of games every 2 months is great. The previews and PnP are good as well.

b.evil.c

I love supporting Button Shy and getting little monthly board game deliveries. Both make me happy. I dislike the postcard games, if I'm honest, and that's mostly because they're a beast to organize and store. I would potentially investigate them more if doing so didn't require me to paw through an entire stack of various postcard games' postcards, supplements, and cards. I'm not against these games—the few times I played Mech Age or Earthshine, they were pretty fun—but the distribution makes it *so* hard for me to get into, and I usually end up sighing when I get a new postcard, because it's another piece of cardboard I'm going to store ineffectively.

Ess

My favourite thing is feeling I'm supporting Button Shy (also being a UK subscriber, it seems until recently I was more a burden than a fundraiser!). I love the concept of the monthly postcard game, and really enjoyed Final Light Year, although I haven't played it enough to do it justice. I'd love to be at the wallet level, but the jump in cost is a bit much at the moment for me. My least favourite thing, I guess, is occasionally getting expansion cards for games I don't actually own, or doubling up cards for games I already own. But that's a minor quibble. I think if I found myself not enjoying the postcard game, I'd probably find it hard to justify continuing with it.

Nick Neill

Favorite thing is the wide variety of games. I don't mind at all to wait for packages. I have become such a fan of everything. So many things could be my favorite. How do you convey your least favorite thing without sounding like a hater...lol. But I love the original idea of board game of the month. A board game is a playing surface, tokens, etc. Games like Raja, Zombie Zone, Wagon Wheels, etc to me speak board game. Games where you cut out tokens or playing pieces. I wish we could see more of those. Seems the bulk of games are handheld card games. And that's fine as I love them regardless but I wish their were more micro games that mimic a board game vs card games.

Todd Cuzzort

Looking further into it, the BGOTMC channels also don’t trigger any push updates, so I guess it’s more useful than trying to remember the URL on the website but it still requires the subscriber to remember to go look at it.

Craig Groff-Folsom

Thank you.

Craig Groff-Folsom

Least favorite thing: When I signed up back in late 2019 it was to get Chain Mail, but by the time I started to receive content it was impossible to get any back issues of the postcard game. That was a bummer. I also got a lot of extras for games I didn't have and couldn't get. That was also a bummer. Months and months of delays were not a joy either. My favorite thing: Sticking with the club got better over time because I was able to get in on the postcard games at the beginning and the extra content eventually became applicable. I stopped worrying about missing Kickstarter campaigns (except for reprint campaigns) as I new I'd eventually see the content in the club. Good games I'd missed out on in the past found their way into reprint campaigns, so I could use my club discount for them. Delivery times have improved after the adoption of some project management techniques. Sticking with the club resulted in having a rotating collection of kick ass solo, 2-player, and family pocket games that live in a small box in my van for easy access whenever I'm enjoying a beer at the bar, out to dinner waiting for our food, or hanging out waiting an appointment. It's been a while since the Kanban charts for future productions were included in a Patreon posting. I do think it was worth having those for a monthly update, even if they didn't update as fast as you liked. It was a great way to show us what was being worked on and how often delays were out of Button Shy's control. They beautifully addressed the What-When-Why questions.

Mikael Brown

Just added you to the BGOTMC section

Button Shy

I am there, but I’m not in the BGOTMC section. You and I had a conversation in the Hush channel about the March package last weekend.

Craig Groff-Folsom

The April Package is just waiting on Forest Sky to arrive and we're a few weeks from that happening. In a week or two we'll send out the post asking if anyone wants to make changes. The May package is right behind that one, with a few of the items in the same shipment. Hope to have that out right after.

Button Shy

I assume you aren't on discord right? We post them there weekly as well in the BGOTMC section. I know not everyone is there, and I know you mentioned not wanting to ask about it on discord, but it's definitely a great tool for instant answers. No excuse for not having things readily available, but I do love to have the live communication.

Button Shy

My favorite part is receiving wallet games that I thought I wouldn’t have brought from the website because of based on description. I thought I wouldn’t like the new game, but monthly subscription makes me excited to see what new game they would send me and when I play them it made me happy that I did the monthly subscription. I am very forgetful so I love the part where I receive a few expansion cards to wallet games I do have, so I wouldn’t have to hurry to website to order and worry about limited stock. The least favorite…I hate to be negative, but I am slowly realizing maybe I am not into postcard games like I thought I would. I have not yet played Final-year game nor have I even attempted to start on Hush. A part of me have FOMO so I’m staying with my subscription because I do enjoy looking at art of Hush. That’s what I enjoy the most about postcards were the art and the tiny stories about characters on the cards.

Charmaine W.

I have never seen the status update link before today. I receive the weekly art posts here (obviously, since I’m responding here) but I had no idea that link existed.

Craig Groff-Folsom

It's such a struggle with that postcard line. It's such a low budget, almost giveaway, item on our end (that's truly there to keep the packages sturdy first and foremost), that if we dedicated the time and money to it, we'd have to delay things and charge way more $. We don't want to do either, and as a result we've locked that line down from new subscribers. I think when the next one comes out, we will clearly let everyone know that it's never perfect, or even close, and the new reward levels are the best way to not have to deal with it. But I agree, I love the idea of a game that continually expands. We just can't offer a really tightly edited one for $5.

Button Shy

I'm in the same boat. I'm so excited to start playing these games, but I haven't received an email asking me what I want and I'm assuming something should be mailing soon as I joined in April. Is there a way to confirm what my selection for my first ship is? Or when that will be?

Hailey Ferraro

Yeah, for a while it seemed like the Patreon exclusive stuff was the top tier, but I always kept trying to stress that no, it's the bottom tier, nearly free thing that we are having fun with. The bread and butter is the wallet line, and as a result, we've severely limited the postcard style line to existing supporters only. Those games are experimental, weird, and have a much smaller team. They have the least amount of resources, and also see the least amount of play. But we do have fun with them, and will keep them going for the fans who got in before they were locked down. Thanks for the feedback. While it's mostly known here and has helped make some of the recent changes, it's good to hear your specific take and be reminded of it.

Button Shy

My favorite thing is all of the games that I have brought from you all! There is such an ease and approachability about your games that make them easy to get people to play them. Also I love how I’m in New York and you all are not to far~ :) My least favorite thing is not being able to get in on the postcard games :( I always missed the sign ip period… I hope I can try it sometime in the near future:)

탱기푸

"When will packages for a specific month start shipping? When will they end shipping?" Have you been following the (almost weekly) status updates? They are the start of this at least. They don't say when something will start shipping, but they say if we have everything here and ready. Unfortunately, we don't know when they will start until everything is here, which is a constant puzzle since a single package is made up of the following items that may come in all separate shipments: Postcard Hush Cards Flipuzzle Card $10 level cards $10 level rules Wallet Game cards Wallet game rules Wallet game wallets Insert cards Bonus free expansion cards, rules With other companies that's going to all arrive at once, but we get them over many many different shipments, so it's really tricky. But the one thing I can tell is the earliest things will be in. If we haven't ordered cards, we're probably a month out - minimum. If we haven't ordered rules, we are at least 2 weeks out. So that can help gauge the soonest date. The latest date is a bit harder. But this is all good, as we are well due to improve the status images and likely pop them here once a week as well. As for this: "At what point should people be concerned about not receiving something?" It sounds like a good regular post we should do here.

Button Shy

My favorite thing is simply the idea of a game that continually expands each month with a new set of components. I just find that neat, with a lot of potential. My least favorite thing is definitely the way information is scattered. The Final Light Year and now Hush both have this problem where the original manuals were so woefully lacking that they would have been better replaced with a link to a living document. Finding the latest information is a chore, too; requiring searching around on Discord, emails, Patreon, and Dropbox. There's no single source of truth and information.

capnbishop

My favorite and least favorite part are both the same - supporting a small business to offer a niche need in a hobby I enjoy. ButtonShy games are easily my most frequently played games, and the value each game offers in comparison to the rest of my collection isn't even comparable. You offer solid games, at a great price, in a criminally underrepresented format. However, it is obvious you are a smaller company. There is quite a bit of DIY on the supporters' end to figure things out, and it can be really frustrating to see limited resources mismanaged. My two cents -- your wallet games are your strong suit, and in that arena, you are unmatched in the industry. I would stick to those games and invest in developing the infrastructure needed to continue creating & producing those games, along with shipping those games. The annual, Patreon-exclusive, expansive games are okay, but frankly, they gather dust on my shelf -- I have neither the inclination nor desire to figure out how they are played. I would happily trade my entire collection of them for a handful of Patreon-exclusive cards to some of your more popular wallet games.

Ken Perryman

My favorite thing is the “experience” games, the ones that run for a specific length of time. I found out about the club when I heard about Personal Space, I strongly considered The Final Light-Year, and I rejoined for Hush. I’m sure you can guess from our conversation on Discord this week, that my least favorite thing is trying to actually track down things that come out of the club. I don’t have all the games so there have been promos and things in the past that are of no interest whatsoever to me. But there are games I DO love, and if there are random things that show up here, it would be nice to have. Quite frankly, it shouldn’t require customers asking repeatedly whether there will ever be anything available later. This derailed my interest in Personal Space (especially because people were visiting moons I couldn’t get) and it’s already tainted my initial experience with Hush when I found out I didn’t sign up fast enough. A close second is the extreme wait for packages to arrive. I really do understand this is a small operation, and I don’t want to sound like it’s just grousing that you’re not able to deliver something that’s financially infeasible. To echo Charlie’s point, there’s an extreme barrier to entry here. “Just ask about it on the Discord” isn’t a good answer. When will packages for a specific month start shipping? When will they end shipping? At what point should people be concerned about not receiving something? I have other monthly subscriptions (yes, they are larger operations) but they are very clear about “if you sign up between dates X and Y you will get this and it will ship during the week of…”. I know I wrote a lot about the negatives, but understand that the positives of the excitement about having a special experience (like Personal Space and Hush) are all worth dealing with these frustrations, at least for this period of time. And I do appreciate the ask for this feedback.

Craig Groff-Folsom

That's when we ask if you want to swap out the featured game for something different from a list of available games. It'll come here just before we ship out.

Button Shy

Thanks for the kind words. Hoping for the best here. Some have it, and everyone else just thinks they have it or it's coming. It's been rough, and can quickly shutdown all the good stuff that we're working on.

Button Shy

Hello! I cannot wait to play Fishing Lessons, really looking forward to this one! I love the club and I don't have a least favorite part. I favor everything about it! I do however feel for your people who have Covid or might have Covid. My husband had it but he still has the long hauler cough, and it's awful.

Renee Bleisch

Thanks for that link, it's helpful. Another quick question while I have you: I sort of discovered y'all recently and ordered a whole bunch of stuff (and then joined the Patreon at the $23 tier). One of them happened to be the Everything Rove pack (with the game and the expansion.) I see that the expansions are going to be the May game (which I assume I'll be getting.) What do you do in this situation when duplicates come up?

Charlie Szymanski

This is a good note, thanks for sharing. Especially now that we've reduced the levels down to just the customizable ones. When we started it was a whole bunch of levels and the customizable one was such a small part of it. Working on the onboarding process is a great suggestion. And to answer, about two weeks before we send a package out, we ask if anyone wants to make changes. This is all via a Patreon post here, and you may or may not be able to see the last one in the older posts here at Patreon. And for status, this is updated weekly (almost), and available at the page below and at discord. https://buttonshygames.com/pages/bgotmc-status

Button Shy

Ooh that's a tough one for me to fix, haha. We do address it a little by trying to make more expanded content than so many new games, but I know it's still a lot of content.

Button Shy

I just joined late April, so I haven't even got a game yet (though I assume since I've paid I should have got one in May?), but I can answer the least favorite thing so far I suppose. I found the onboarding pretty complicated. Like, I don't even know how games are chosen or sent out or when that happens or if it happens. If there are details on that, I probably just missed them. The first Kickstarter experience was good, the tables were helpful saying what to pledge to get exactly what I wanted, but it did feel a bit weird to pledge a certain odd amount to get what I think I wanted. I don't know if it exists as a post somewhere, but maybe a "HOW THIS ALL WORKS!" email should go out to new Patreon supporters or something.

Charlie Szymanski

Favorite thing is all the great games showing up often as little surprises. Least favorite thing is the guilt over not getting around to playing all the things that show up.
