And now for something all new...

Hey everyone, we have lots to report and so little time so I will do it in the form of a whole bunch of bullet points:

We are going to have some new content around here, driven by a few of our great community members. The first is going to be something from Tyson Mertlich every Monday. If you don't know Tyson, we met on the Button Shy discord via the 18 Card Challenges and his game Temple of Xibalba caught our eye in the recent Legacy challenge. Tyson also works as a consultant in the industry and has done some great interviews on his YouTube channel, Inside Game Design with Tyson Mertlich (https://www.youtube.com/user/PKTyson).

Hey everybody! Happy to be on board to help out with some Patreon content. As Jason said, my name is Tyson and I am a huge board and card game fan. I've been playing games my whole life and started playing Button Shy games as of Origins 2019 where I first played In Vino Morte and fell in love. I've started working on a few board games as a designer, developer, art director, marketer, and just about any other role you can imagine for a few different publishers. I'm so happy and excited to help be a part of all the wonderful things that Button Shy does and am looking forward to bringing you all some behind the scenes content. If you have any questions or suggestions please let me know!

Note: Tyson can't post directly (as you need 100,000 social media followers to have a Patreon team account - we're still like 95,000 followers away from that), but he is a Patron and will be able to see and reply to comments.

We're going to have something new every week, mostly on Mondays. Here's the upcoming schedule (that we will refine as we go)

Monday 8/10 (today!)
Skulls of Sedlec Tabletop Simulator Module

Monday 8/17
Behind the Scenes Interview with Dustin Dobson, designer of Skulls of Sedlec

Monday 8/24
Secret content release - some new images and info about upcoming games.

Friday 9/4
Community Event - We're going to run Skulls of Sedlec live and will be bringing in some Patrons to play as well.

All of these are going to be exclusive to Patrons, at least for a certain amount of time before they are released into the wild.

Skulls of Sedlec Tabletop Simulator Module

Tyson will be bringing some of our games to Tabletop Simulator, starting with Skulls of Sedlec. I should note, and repeat that these are exclusively for Patrons, so it's a little bit of a workaround to get these out to you. I'm sure this process will become easier as we go but baby steps.

If you have Tabletop Simulator follow the steps below. If you don't have it, it's a Steam program that's usually about $20 (but can go down to $10). It's a solid way to play and test games remotely, which has been more and more necessary in recent months. Unlike most apps, Tabletop Simulator is mostly in your control. It'll shuffle cards and things like that, but the majority of it is you moving cards around the table and enforcing the rules. There's slight learning curve, but we're starting with some of the better games for the system.

Before anything else, please keep in mind that these games are for Patrons only, so please do not share or distribute the modules. Thanks :)

Instructions:

After you've completed that (and here's where we'd eventually want to narrow this process down), add your Steam name to this form - we will accept the friend request and start sharing games with you!

FORM: https://forms.gle/gSGxSjgdp6xdrhtt6

Eventually we'll have a nice library of games, from released favorites, to new and upcoming games that we may be testing.

Other things in the works

We are planning on more behind the scenes video chats, including a series of short videos with me (Jason) and Lazslo Korossy. If you caught our recent Gen Con panel, Lazslo was a great host and we're going to continue that discussion with some deep dives into the inner workings of Button Shy.

We're also looking to do some group sessions of Chain Mail. Still finding the format (likely something like me running it on video stream - Twitch? - with others directing me how to play their characters. If anyone is interested in joining in, let me know.

I think that's it. Gotta get back to work, but I think we have some great new content heading your way. :)

Any questions let us know!

And now for something all new...

Comments

Hi everyone! I'm new here. Looking forward to playing some games and checking out all the new stuff! ☺️

Hugo Herrera

If I had an extra 30 minutes a day, that would be great, unfortunately, I don't right now :-(

Venron

I tend to be the same way, but Personal Space is perfect for people like us because 1) it only takes about 30 min a day and 2) you can only play once a day.

Kayla Pascoe

Yep!

Raspilicious

My problem with Personal Space is personal time. I tend to go all in when I get into something new, and I just don't have the time to spare :-( It looks really fun, but I haven't even had the time to dig out my Sagrada to borrow dice from. All my stuff is sitting on my desk to remind me, but just haven't had the time...

Venron

I’d definitely like to see more multiplayer games, since TTS makes it so much easier to connect with others! Tussie Mussie, Penny Rails, and Arcane Bakery Clash would be nice! I mention ABC because it would be nice to play out of print multiplayer games as well

Marceline Leiman

Raspilicious, are you "Rasp" on steam?

Tyson Mertlich

This is terribly exciting! :D

Raspilicious

Happy to help. Hope it works out for you!

Button Shy

Okay you convinced me, it'll be my lunchtime activity tomorrow!

Brian W

Yes definitely start with moving and working and jump on discord for guidance. There’s lots of nuance but it can all be ignored in the beginning

Button Shy

It definitely seemed very avant garde when I opened it, but this isn't entirely what I expected, but seems easier than I thought. Is it like something I could start and play in my hour-ish lunch break tomorrow? (I work from home for now, so computer access isn't a problem.)

Brian W

I think that’s one of the closest comparisons. This blog seems to capture it really nicely : https://boardgamegeek.com/blogpost/106127/penitent-freedom

Button Shy

Is it like...board game animal crossing? Because that's what its starting to sound like.

Brian W

It can be as evolved as you want it to be. One session is like 25 minutes once you get it down, but for example - each weekend we’ve had in-game events like a birdwatching tournament or a donation drive to build a library and everyone was online working together or competing on their own time. It’s really neat and different but has worked really well.

Button Shy

Is it like a very involved game? I'm just not sure what I'll be getting myself into, so I don't know if its something I can start quickly, or if I should save it for a special day, or something. I guess thats the other reason why I haven't gone at it yet

Brian W

Hahaha. The one takes you to the rules. You can ignore the others for now. There’s a little bit to learn but the discord community will walk you through anything and everything.

Button Shy

I opened it, saw a bunch of QR codes and other strange things, put it back in the envelope, and put it in my button shy box and said "I'll uh...figure this one out later"

Brian W

Anything that's specifically intimidating or anything that would help you get started? My tips are try a day of just moving to your job and working. Build up a few dollars and get an idea of some of the base mechanics. But if you help me understand, I'll help you. :)

Button Shy

I've been wanting to actually dig into personal space for a while now, but I've been so intimidated by it...

Brian W

Thanks Mark! Looking forward to making more :D, any you are looking forward to in particular?

Tyson Mertlich

Thanks, maybe I will add you (but later) then. I have thought about getting TTS a number of times but always held off. As more things I might like show up there though, instead of say the free Tabletopia, I keep getting tempted to get it, so I may have it eventually.

James M.

Welcome Tyson! Looking forward to more TTS implementation :)

Marceline Leiman

A team is INCREDIBLY useful at our almost zero level followers. I can't imagine having 10 times the amount as we do and still being too low for a team account. But no there's no reason to add us if you don't have TTS, unless you want to just incase you get it one day. Chain Mail will be through something else and I'll share when we figure that out.

Button Shy

Is there any point in requesting to add you on Steam if we don't have Tabletop Simulator? I might be interested in some sort of Chain Mail group session, but at this point only if it's more of a learning/teaching type of game and not an online group multiplayer game. Aside but "you need 100,000 social media followers to have a Patreon team account" -- as if a team is only useful if you have tons of followers. *rolls eyes* Patreon does some weird things sometimes.
