It wasn't about the freshmen, it was about the third years. Hinata's friends told her that she should compete without holding back, but when she got a better time than the third years, the same friends threw her under the bus.

While Yuzuki took the opportunity to assure that they are friends too LOL Again I suggest once you finish the anime you should react to the OP and ED again but with lyrics, that will hit you differently. There are three insert songs whose lyrics also have a lot of meaning once you finish the anime: "Mata Ne", "Sora Wo Miagete" and " Haru Ka Toku" you can find videos of all three with English cc.

But when they were reprimanded for not taking it easy on the freshmen, they blamed it on Hinata. And that's when Hinata withdrew from school

One of these things is the hirachy system, you always have to respect your elders, they always come first because they are there longer than you, in school that is reflected by upper classmen, hench the "Senpai" to everyone who's your senior and lots of other different polite gestures. You will encounter it in every Sports anime you will ever touch that this will be a topic and it is what happend to hinata. She was in the fast track club, a club that focuses on sport attached to it, you would think in sports it only matters who is best because it is definetly skill focused but the reality is, a lot of people rather under perform than to outshine their seniors. If they do, they will be seen as overly self-important as if they were something better. Especially problematic it is with Third Years, in every School third year means it's their last year at the school, the last chance to accomplish something in their club and for themselfs and it is also the time when they usually are at the peak of their abilities. Because Hinata was younger, i think second year? maybe even first, who knows, she run into the trouble that the people she thought were her friends backstabbed her, why they did it? i don't know, i think they actually believed what they said that it shouldn't matter and only the fastest is important, but the second they got confronted by a third year they folded in and basically blamed Hinata for giving it her best. They probably did it to not get flag themselfs but it clearly showed that they weren't friends in the first place and hinata was badly hurt by finding it out so she left the club. Now, someone that did really well and was even chosen to run in a upcoming competition just left the club, that creates talking why the person left and it is mentioned that they spread a bunch of rumors to not insult the third years and make it their fault if they for example lose the said competetion "yeah she left because she is meeting a guy" becomes to "i saw them at a love hotel" and so on, it went till hinata decided to leave the school for good to not be in this position anymore. So yeah, when they talked about it, it didn't sounded like a big thing for us in the west but there it is basically social murder what happend to her. And now those people came back, to be live on television, maybe they remembered that Hinata still existed and felt bad, maybe they just wanted to be on television, we will never find out and Hinata wont either because they probably left after being told off.
