2023-10-08 12:06:00 +0000 UTCIn regards as to whether Light wanted it to end this way, look at it from this perspective: Light wanted his father to kill Mello; but Light still had to make everyone believe that a person would die within 13 days if they used the Death Note even once. So the alternatives were: either his father would have had to use the notebook for the rest of his life, or Light would have had to kill his father to prove the 13-days rule.
