The entire scene with Leif and Thorfinn in jail never appeared in the manga and was exclusive to the anime, and it really added a whole new layer of depth to this episode that we didn't know we needed. This is really the only time we've seen Askeladd so pressed against the wall to figure out a plan, and like you said it was all portrayed very beautifully through the animation.
