Floch told those new cadets that Commander Shadis represented the old ways of thinking and that the Jaegerist represented the new way. People were also whispering, what's the point of learning how to fight Titans anymore. Our enemies are humans now. Then Floch told them to beat him til' he can't stand. Come this episode, those same cadets were staring a titan in the face, cowering in fear (understandable btw.) and who saves them? Commander Shadis. Too perfect.
