Unlike Fate/Stay Night, Fate/Zero is originally a Light Novel, ufotable then adapted it into an anime, but there are no Visual Novels this time around. It’s set 10 years before the start of Fate/Stay Night, and the marks on the characters’ hands represent their “Master” status, basically the symbol that identifies them as participants in the Holy Grail War. Animation-wise it’s one of the best anime ever made, not to mention the masterful storytelling, the lovely OST, the incomparable voice acting and the limitless amount of lore provided.
