I liked the guest star, but I thought he was just a little too over-the-top at times. Like... that "turn towards the camera and give an evil smirk" in sick bay was a bit much. We already suspected he was a real villain, he didn't need to play it up so much. That's probably more on the director than the actor, though.

Michelle Forbes absolutely has great chemistry with Jonathan Frakes. It certainly felt more natural than a few of the romances that were pushed together in the Star Trek series.

I have the suspicion that even though they lost their memories, they still had the instincts for the job. Even when Worf was captain and Picard sat at ops, Picard was always injecting because deep down, he knew he was in charge of the ship. This let him be an advisor, guiding the captain on the course he wanted, without being at immediate loggerheads. Also, MacDuff would have had to explain things like Picard's captain's quarters, the four pips on Picard's collar, things that couldn't be electronically altered like the computer was. I would even say it's a little bit of a weakness of the episode that it took them as long as they did to figure out who was captain.

The big question I always had - if McDuff was able to alter the records to make himself First Officer and Riker Second Officer, why didn't he just make himself the Captain?

Dan J Reid

Then how would he stand any chance of trying to assume command toward the end?

"Shoving the 1st officer onto him was a bad narrative choice, we the audience know he's not the executive officer" Weird I remembered him being the 2nd officer. I think I thought that was what he was supposed to be until near the end. I like these Twilight Zone-type episodes, but now it seem like they should have written the episode different in some way -- put a few other "no name" officers on the bridge and give MacDuff a different title perhaps. (Ha! Bring Minuet back to haunt Riker as a bridge officer, but I guess that would give things away too.) I did see that Erich Anderson, the actor who played MacDuff, passed away last year from esophageal cancer at the age of 67.

I think the infiltrator would have been better off as the 2nd officer, 3rd officer, the graveyard shift command officer or better yet a mission specialist like Shelby was. Shoving the 1st officer onto him was a bad narrative choice, we the audience know he's not the executive officer,

Maybe, but I think most people who are genre savvy or have seen many episodes of Star Trek would key in on him being the traitor just from his being the guest star.

This is a low key top tier episode. It's not one that I think most people tend to think about when looking back at top episodes, but when you watch it I think it definitely has that feel. It IS an episode where by design the audience is ahead of the crew in at least some parts - though not all - of the mystery, BUT the mystery is really not the main draw of the episode. The main draw or strength of the episode is actually in being that little bit ahead and knowing some of what the characters don't know and seeing how in in their fundamental personalities they all react to and behave in this situation.

The RoKer shippers love this episode.

As with any reruns after watching these episodes so many times over the last 30 years you just have to get used to the fact that you’re ahead of the characters when confronting a mystery. With subsequent viewings you’re obviously going to be ahead of the characters. The fact that people can rewatch and enjoy a “mystery” episode is a testament to the quality writing, direction and performances of this show.

Ah. Syndication. These were the times.

One of my favorites. A, just misses the S as like Alex, I didn't enjoy the guest star. Fun times with Ro and Riker. Liked your interest in what one might see going forward with regards to: Vulcan, Android, maybe something else that explores humanity. Thanks guys 🖖

I think they could have made McDuff being the alien a twist if they’d had a minor scene at the beginning - something like “we’ve had a specialist beam aboard for our current mission”, introduce him then have the probe thing scan them. He could have had some fake Starfleet transfer order or something

Worf and Riker Ride Again

This got a heart for the thumbnail even before hitting play!

We need a compilation video of every time Alex calls an episode or scene before it happens. Genius.

I was watching as TNG was originally broadcast. I was wondering for the first half of the ep if I had missed an episode that introduced the new officer…
