One of my all-time favorite TNG episodes. ❤️❤️❤️

2025-03-13 19:01:25 +0000 UTCA first for TV and Star Trek TNG (03/21/92) 12:01 TV movie (1993) Groundhog Day (1993). The two movies were out about a month apart. Based on two different books. Star Trek at warp speed, got here first. This is in my top 5 ST TNG episodes.

2025-02-08 04:40:40 +0000 UTCTNG was a lot of "firsts" for me. This episode was the first time in media that I was exposed to the idea of a "Time loop." It aired roughly a year before Goundhog's Day starring Bill Murray. I remember when Majora's Mask on the N64 came out, I only had that movie and this episode to refer it to. Since then, time loops have become more and more common in media--at least from what I've observed. In short, I feel like this was daring and unknown territory to be toying with for an audience in the 90s, and I appreciate the confidence and the balls that the producers had to start out every act of this episode with virtually no explanation. "You wanna find out what's going on? Keep your ass glued to the channel ya melon fucks." Solid S Tier for melon fuckS

2025-01-24 20:16:00 +0000 UTCIn my personal top 5! I really enjoy the twilight zone or temporal displacement episodes a lot. I like other moral dilemma/klingon/mystery kinds of episodes too, but this true sci-fi kind of stuff is the other side of the coin so to speak.

2025-01-23 18:53:00 +0000 UTCOne of the better episodes of the season. Top THREE, even. I'm a sucker for a decently done "Groundhog Day" plotline. Low 'S'.

2025-01-22 02:49:05 +0000 UTC@Jovet How? Enterprise's clocks were 17 days off. That is how long they were in the loop. How could the Bozeman collide with them earlier than they were in the loop if the Enterprise wasn't there until 17 days ago? What initiated the loop for the Bozeman, what was their reset point? In one of the conferences, Geordie specifically explains that a large enough explosion next to a tempral distortion would disrupt the space-time continuum and get them stuck in the loop. If the explosion is the destruction of the Enterprise, then what would've caused the loop for the Bozeman for the 100 years before the Enterprise arrived in the area to explode?

Jovet
2025-01-22 02:25:28 +0000 UTCI remember watching this episode live, and it being so compelling that I was yelling at the commercials to end so I could find out how everything resolved! It can be tough to get the pacing right when the climax effectively happens multiple times during the plot, but Frakes and Braga pulled it off very well and kept the tension high without much of a musical score to lean on(The poker scene in particular is one of my favorite scenes in the whole series). Easy S and one of my favorite episodes of the season.

2025-01-21 23:01:30 +0000 UTCLOVE this episode. Well written and good direction keeps it fresh. Not quite S-tier for me but one I really do enjoy on the rewatch.

2025-01-21 22:44:14 +0000 UTCThat's... what I said? Unless you're saying the anomaly was a time loop anomaly and not a time travel anomaly? I'm just saying that the explosion, coupled with the proximity to the anomaly caused the loop.
Nolan
2025-01-21 22:15:33 +0000 UTCThe WTF?!?!? opening, the mystery, and the resolution are all superb IMO. Top notch Star Trek right here. S for sure.
Paul O'Neal
2025-01-21 21:54:45 +0000 UTCI disagree. The anomaly existed before, it was just exacerbated through time by the explosion of the Enterprise.
Jovet
2025-01-21 21:51:04 +0000 UTCWhy were you aggravated?
Jovet
2025-01-21 21:48:54 +0000 UTCProbably my second-favorite.
Jovet
2025-01-21 21:48:18 +0000 UTCI agree with you about the Bozeman's effect on history and the lack of an altered reality like we saw in "Yesterday's Enterprise". The sequence of events for the Bozeman was entirely linear, in effect, this was supposed to happen to them in my opinion. Although it isn't mentioned, I suspect that if Data or Picard had consulted the records on the Bozeman it would've said that the ship disappeared without a trace on that stardate.
Ron Hubbard Jr
2025-01-21 21:23:13 +0000 UTCThis may be the biggest WTF opening for you guys of the entire series.
Ron Hubbard Jr
2025-01-21 21:16:57 +0000 UTCMan, thank you. I missed that every time! My only gripe with the episode was how would the Captain of The Bozeman not figure out in a century what Picard & Co. figured out in 17 days. I always just assumed Kelsey Grammer was a terrible Captain and had nude photos of somebody in Starfleet and was thus given command of The Bozeman... I guess this episode IS an S.
Adam Dearn
2025-01-21 21:14:06 +0000 UTCThis is my favorite episode of Season 5.
Ron Hubbard Jr
2025-01-21 21:09:34 +0000 UTCMan, was I ever aggravated as hell when this episode came out. I hated it on the first watch. But something made me want to keep watching it and every time I did, I realized how freaking brilliant it is, and it is now one of my personal favorites of TNG.

2025-01-21 20:57:30 +0000 UTCHmm do you think? There are plenty of episodes where the boys rate the episode lower than the "average" would expect (I mean at least... THREE times). I don't think they've shown a statistical top box bias in their rankings overall. There are so many A+/S- episodes, it comes down to so little to tip the balance, end of the day your take is right on.
Matt Newmark
2025-01-21 19:40:37 +0000 UTCI see you respond well to stimulus. S with THREE plusses is the absolute correct score here.
Matt Newmark
2025-01-21 19:36:37 +0000 UTCA kid, you say... Perhaps as early as THREE years old?
Matt Newmark
2025-01-21 19:35:41 +0000 UTCYeah, when I first saw this episode I didn't realize that the "time loop" and temporal disturbance were two different things (with the loop being enabled by the power of the explosion next to the disturbance).
Ian Westcott
2025-01-21 19:28:42 +0000 UTCBEST cold opening ever! This is, no question, my favorite TNG episode. It's not "the best episode," but it is my favorite. Any time I've had a bad day, I come home and I'm in the mood for a really good, fun episode of Star Trek, then Cause and Effect is my go-to. I love this one. It's S+++ tier for me.
Ian Westcott
2025-01-21 19:26:44 +0000 UTCThis is one of my favorite go-to episodes. I loved it as a kid, and I still do.
Gregory Foster
2025-01-21 17:03:33 +0000 UTCThis is a really good, solid, enjoyable episode with a mystery and the Enterprise blowing up. It's not quite an S for me, but it probably will be for you, since you're more generous with S than I am. But it is an upper-range A-tier episode, and it is one that I have watched more than once and will very much enjoy watching with you guys when you get to it.
John
2025-01-21 16:57:17 +0000 UTCCheers for your take.
Nolan
2025-01-21 16:50:06 +0000 UTCContinuity note: The Effect of the other ship, the Bozeman, coming forward in time is the same visual effect as when the Enterprise -C travelled forward in time. Something many miss is that the Bozeman was not in the loop for a century, but also only 17 days. It was the Enterprise blowing up in close proximity to the time rift the Bozeman travelled through that caused the loop, not the anomaly itself. I guess the Bozeman and her crew's impact on history was so terribly minor to not change the timeline at all. Bummer for them.
Nolan
2025-01-21 16:49:19 +0000 UTCThe Bozeman was also only in the loop for 17 days. Them coming through the rift was the same as when the Enterprise-C came forward. It's even the same VFX. So the Bozeman comes forward, hits the Enterprise, which blows up next to the timehole and THAT causes the loop.
Nolan
2025-01-21 16:43:25 +0000 UTCS - this is my favorite episode of TNG.

2025-01-21 15:23:34 +0000 UTCYeah I’m not surprised anymore. When I taught high school I made references to Gilligan’s Island or the Brady Bunch and the kids had no idea. We’re screwed lol

Matt Newmark
2025-01-21 14:21:52 +0000 UTCWell, times THREE anyway.
Matt Newmark
2025-01-21 14:20:17 +0000 UTCWhat a brilliant episode. And the way we are brough into the solution from so many POV is priceless. Only thing i can't understand is why it took so many years for Frasier to get it 😅 Groundhog Day 🖖
Dan Here
2025-01-21 14:16:01 +0000 UTCIt's a very good episode, but it falls short of S tier for me. Very close though. While the intro hook is amazing, the plot sometimes feels a little convoluted. The lack of Daphne and Niles in this one makes the episode alot less comedic. And its strange that they decided not to have the story take place in Seattle. It's still a great one that I wouldn't hesitate to rewatch. Definitely better than the new Paramount Frasier series.
Jason Shearer
2025-01-21 13:48:38 +0000 UTCThis is a perfect episode to me. I love everything about it. I am guessing fans will show this a lotta love...............So you guys will hate it
Prof Moff
2025-01-21 12:56:14 +0000 UTCI think you guys will really like this one. It's a bold choice to kill everyone in the teaser, then just pick up like nothing happened and not start to reveal or acknowledge the main plot device to the audience and characters until after the third loop. Frake's directing is really on point too. I really liked how the camera placement got more unconventional as we got deeper in the loops like that high angle shot of the conference room.
EnigmaticPenguin

2025-01-21 12:09:16 +0000 UTCAlways loved this one. I love the build up of clues and the stack up of differences every loop. And the Bozeman is my favorite Reliant variation!

2025-01-21 11:32:37 +0000 UTCI love the way this episode is shot by Frakes! the loop is always interesting even though we are watching the same scenes again and again.
General Trelane
2025-01-21 11:12:35 +0000 UTCWhen this came out initially after the first commercial break I thought that the studio must have screwed something up. It was a really well done episode with another "no real bad guy" story done very well.
Max Yoder
2025-01-21 11:07:28 +0000 UTC#3 of my top 4 TNG episodes (in release order), so a solid S. This is how you write and direct a good "time shenanigans" story, something that a lot of shows (including Star Trek) often do badly. I've re-watched this many times and never get bored, which is impressive given the repetitive nature of the episode. Bonus points for Captain Crane.
Gruzz
2025-01-21 10:19:49 +0000 UTCyou must admit one of the best hooks for a episode starts with a bang, be funny if when you do the youtube version you edit in the end credits for a laugh
Dark Kronis
2025-01-21 09:44:00 +0000 UTCHow long before Josh looks at the disc to see if it is broken during the teaser? Oh and S Tier 😉🖖
Jon1701
2025-01-21 09:40:26 +0000 UTCS tier - Grand Episode. One of the best of TNG in my opinion. Also, Frakes understands the characters, show and fans very well, which is very obvious in most of his directed episodes.
Loki San
2025-01-21 09:31:51 +0000 UTCOne of the best episodes of TNG.
Spencer Loften
2025-01-21 09:30:33 +0000 UTCGreat episode, I only deduct half a point for Riker's flawed logic. He said reversing course might be what caused the time loop in the first place but before they knew about the time loop there would have been no reason to reverse course so obviously staying on course is what started this.

2025-01-21 08:45:42 +0000 UTCThe cheers "crossover" (I know it's not technically a crossover) would have been insane with Alley. Also did you know most 30 and under people know nothing about the TV show Cheers?😬
Greg Quinn
2025-01-21 08:27:18 +0000 UTCAlso Troi can read emotions. My theory is Geordi doesn't cheat. Data turns himself "down" like he did to lose to Troi at chess. And Troi just doesn't read people to make it fair. Finally Worf wouldn't actually kill anyone for losing or even cheating. He just talks like a psycho to be cool.
Greg Quinn
2025-01-21 08:24:44 +0000 UTCJosh, Alex if y'all don't find this to be a S I'm leaving and never coming back. Kidding on that. But seriously I'll be shocked.
Greg Quinn
2025-01-21 08:22:24 +0000 UTCThis was enjoyable, just too bad Ro got nothing to do, so minus points for that. I think I prefer the murder one from a couple of seasons back, but this was very solid. Season 5 seems to be the best season of all (although I skipped S4). Just let the record show this getting almost 80% S tier, and sure enough, no one is crying, no babbling on about honor, no violins, no shy people being cute, no kids, and most of all-most of all- the ship is in danger. People can say whatever they want, the numbers don't lie.

2025-01-21 07:48:53 +0000 UTCGoing the Conan O'Brien route here and fully committing to the bit.
Matt Newmark
2025-01-21 07:31:56 +0000 UTCVoted A. It is very memorable and distinct, what keeps it out of S for me is that because of its conceit, it struggle a bit when it comes to pacing. I remember being really compelled by it originally, so maybe it's S on first viewing and A on rewatches.

2025-01-21 06:59:27 +0000 UTCThe concept in general is now far more common in film/TV but was original in March 1992. Still holds all its power in its opening hook, and the clue Data invents and then subsequently discovers is expert in its simplicity. Also great to get a Crusher led episode again. S all the way.

2025-01-21 06:57:48 +0000 UTCDid you know that there are THREE lines in an A?

2025-01-21 06:57:32 +0000 UTCI don't see how anyone can rate it higher than THREE, but my subconscious might be influencing that notion.

2025-01-21 06:54:25 +0000 UTCS tier. One of the best hooks in the show, up there with Yesterday's Enterprise for pure shock value, and a great Frakes directed episode.

2025-01-21 05:04:48 +0000 UTCThis was a very innovative episode, that now every Sci-fi franchise takes a crack at. Not sure how you guys'll like it, considering the entire episode has you ahead of the characters and repeating things over and over. Frakes knocked it out of the park on directing, though partially out of necessity of all those repeating scenes. And it's another Beverly focused episode ala "Remember Me," so it's a toss up. A at least for me.
Nolan
2025-01-21 05:01:20 +0000 UTCNow it can be told... the leftover pieces of the Enterprise model they made to blow up were bought by Red Letter Media. That is how S tier many find this one. It's always fun to watch this episode unfold.

2025-01-21 03:49:46 +0000 UTCA tier for me, it's a genre standard and executes well on all fronts but I would personally rather watch Conundrum for the first time again. For a rewatch, definitely this because it's fun to match memory to the show beat for beat. That said, I'm sure you two are going to shit on the episode because it's too plot-centric and too much of a genre standard.

2025-01-21 03:49:34 +0000 UTCI don't think there's anything guilty about that pick. It's a great episode. Maybe not the most conventional #1 pick, but I can absolutely see it being someone's favourite.

2025-01-21 03:40:05 +0000 UTCYou'd think this episode would get boring given it's the same events repeating over and over, but it just grabs you and doesn't let go, and the final product is quite entertaining. It's a classic for a reason. But you'd think this episode would get boring given it's the same events repeating over and over.....

2025-01-21 03:38:14 +0000 UTCAnother Frakes directorial banger. Having to come up with THREE sometimes more ways to shoot the same scene produced some great angles. Definitely THREE out of THREE stars for this - episode THREE times six.

Matt Newmark
2025-01-21 03:07:50 +0000 UTCHmm I never made that assumption (Though it's a valid theory for sure) - I like to believe that the Bozeman came through the temporal anomaly and caused the loop, but it was a direct passage from their time to TNG's. Primarily this is because I can't reconcile their lack of insanity given how affected the TNG crew was after only 17 days.
Matt Newmark
2025-01-21 03:06:24 +0000 UTCOne of my favorite episodes. I remember the first time seeing this and the horrible feeling at the end of the hook. After the commercial break it's back to business-as-usual on the Enterprise. And then it happens again. And again. And again. This was so wild to watch and noticing the subtle differences each time they restarted, especially on the bridge. And it's mostly just general around-the-ship activity such as the poker game, Georgi in sick bay, the Doctor getting ready for bed, Picard reading his book. I'd give this one an S. Such a cool story.

2025-01-21 02:28:22 +0000 UTCThis is my FAVORITE TNG episode. Not because I believe, intellectually, that it is the best episode, it’s just always been a guilty pleasure of mine. An S-tier, nonetheless. Oddly enough, I find it a good one-off to start people who aren’t Trekkies. I’ve been looking forward to how you guys will react to it, but admittedly not sure whether you’ll like it or not. “ALL HANDS ABANDON SHIP!”

2025-01-21 02:26:54 +0000 UTCI remember being 11 years old and gasping during the cold open when this aired. Probably the best hook/cold open in all of TNG. They brilliantly do the same scenes over and over again and it never gets boring or stale.

2025-01-21 02:25:25 +0000 UTCLet's play some poker! Fun episode. Love a good time loop - it's deja vu all over again. Good execution of the different loops. Kelsey Grammer must have been giddy to be in a Star Trek episode playing a Star Fleet officer. At least an A for me.

2025-01-21 02:24:13 +0000 UTCThis ridiculously fun episode aired almost an entire year before "Groundhog Day" with Bill Murray mainstreamed the time loop concept. Easy to think this script was written off the success of the movie, but nope!

2025-01-21 02:18:37 +0000 UTCSome people said they could walk away to do something else while watching because it reapeated so much. Kept thinking ground hog day myself. Stil, the WTF hook along wit a cameo by Kelsy Kramer make the episode quite unique. Gets an S from me.

2025-01-21 01:57:30 +0000 UTCWhen Frakes received this script, he initially thought it was a joke due to its repetitive nature. MANY people were confused.... not just Frakes.... wondering if there was a mistake because the acts kept repeating. Frakes said that once he realized the writer (Brannon Braga) wasn't F---ing with" him, he embraced the challenge and found it enjoyable.

2025-01-21 01:49:20 +0000 UTCThe only bad thing I can say about this episode is Ro's new God-awful haircut lol I think this one is a lot of fun. Great opener, good mystery, it's fun watching them figure it out and try to get out of the loop, and it's even capped off with a fun cameo at the end with Kelsey Grammer. I've read that they originally wanted Kirstie Alley to come back as Saavik as the last-minute cameo. That would have been pretty cool to see her again.

2025-01-21 01:26:31 +0000 UTCThis is such a good one, just imagine how large the main shuttle bay has to be so that it's decompression throws the ship forward. Also, I really wonder what Beverly is drinking... some yummy cordial probably.

2025-01-21 01:18:05 +0000 UTCFun fact, Johnathan Frakes thought he was being pranked when he started reading the script, as every act began the same. He did such a good job in what he was taught as an up in coming director. The camera work by itself is top notch. As the episode goes on, you feel yourself being peeled away from reality. Just a great episode and a guilty pleasure of mine. And bonus Fun fact, they wanted the Bozeman to be a cheers reunion and tried getting Kirstie Alley to reprise her role as Savvik as the “other woman on the bridge” but sadly that didn’t happen.
Nathan Walker
2025-01-21 01:13:03 +0000 UTCThe woman standing next to Kelsey Grammer was apparently originally planned to be Saavik, which would have been an amazing way to bring her back seeing as they didn’t for The Undiscovered Country - though it would only have made me more annoyed we don’t see things from the Bozeman crew’s perspective.
GratChat
2025-01-21 01:05:48 +0000 UTCFun fact: they didn't re-use any footage between loops, and tried to use different camera angles each time. Frakes found it quite hard to come up with so many new camera angles!

2025-01-21 01:03:42 +0000 UTCFor me, this is the second best episode of season 5, and an easy S tier. It sets up a compelling mystery with a satisfying conclusion. Kelsey Grammer is just the cherry on top.

2025-01-21 00:44:27 +0000 UTCS tier, so creative and totally engrossing on a first watch. On a rewatch it gets better as you can spot the details. I think it’s the source of a very long-running meme as well.

2025-01-21 00:44:08 +0000 UTCWhen first aired, viewers called their local TV stations thinking they were mistakenly restarting the episode after every commercial break. One of JFs finest, in my opinion. Also, that hook was chef’s kiss💥

2025-01-21 00:40:58 +0000 UTCI love this episode!!! This is my third favorite episode of the series. I think it’s one of those episodes that you either love or hate. 2025-01-21 00:40:19 +0000 UTCWhat a way to traumatize a kid, by watching his favorite ship blow up. This episode always terrified me in the beginning scene. After that it was a good episode so B Grade for BOOM!

2025-01-21 00:35:31 +0000 UTCI think this episode is an S tier and one of the best episodes in the franchise. Unrelated to watching it but you guys should definitely do a time loop skit when you do your edit or whatever, it'd be too good an opportunity not to.
THE LORE!!!
2025-01-21 00:33:50 +0000 UTCOne of my all-time favorites. We’re onto the mystery from the start but that doesn’t detract from the plot (plots?). And it’s another example of how screwed they would all be without Data.
Evan Guthrie
2025-01-21 00:33:18 +0000 UTCCaptain "Frasier Crane" comes to the TNG present (2368) all the way from approximately the year 2278, which basically means he and his ship have been stuck in that loop since sometime between The Motion Picture and The Wrath of Khan.
Dion James Pitman
2025-01-21 00:32:00 +0000 UTCWhen I introduce someone to Star Trek, this is amongst the few episodes I recommend they start with -- fun and accessible.

2025-01-21 00:30:57 +0000 UTCThis one has quite possibly the best “hook” of the entire franchise. And lots and lots of poker. Yes, you'll probably figure out what's going on long before the characters do, and if you know who he is you might keep wondering where Kelsey Grammer is considering his appearance is spoiled in the opening credits, but I love this episode. Director Frakes and the production staff do a great job making each time loop slightly different than the previous one but keeping most of the same elements. A “Best of the Best” ranked episode for me
KatWithAttitude
2025-01-21 00:29:31 +0000 UTCIn my opinion, there are only about FIVE "S-Tier" episodes in the entire TNG series. This is one of them. That is, if S-Tier is based upon quality alone... something akin to A+. If "S" tier is simply something that personally resonates with me, theoretically despite deficiencies... then that system is alien to me. Yes, personal resonance is meaningful, but belongs on a different scale. I'm all about quality. That said, for quality, it's A+, and yes... since it does resonate with me... I'll give it that S as well.
