UNCUT - The Color Purple (1985)

Saw this in the 80s. Not really my cup of tea, but Whoopi is mesmerizing & it was my introduction to Danny "I'm too old for this shit" Glover. Film is subjective. I hope you guys enjoy it 😎

Owen Madden

Whoopi Goldberg kind of gives the same hand gesture to Q as she gives Mister after the dinner scene at the car. Also, really ironic that Oprah spelled backwards is Harpo.

Christopher Boutwell

That’s why the patron requests are great! Stuff we would never typically watch!

Josh (Target Audience)

Gosh, would never have had this on my list of films you'd end up watching. This is one of my favourite movies of all time (if not my absolute fave). It's so rich, deep, outstanding soundtrack, cinematography, performances and oh so much heart and passion. I'm saying all this before watching it with you, as I need to brace myself since I'm not sure I'm wanting to be emotionally drained today. So, if I don't watch today, I will soon. So interested to see how you guys react to it...

Andy Frankham-Allen

A tragedy.

Tom Occhipinti

I saw the Broadway musical adaptation too. It was fabulous! I don't like rewatching movies that make me cry but I'll make an exception.

T’Pynyn of Vulcan

Thank you for requesting this. I watched this when I was too young to fully appreciate it. I ended up rewatching it for this reaction and, wow, I should've rewatched it sooner. Thanks

Wrestling With Gaming

It was nominated for Best Picture, but lost to Rain Man

Jon Nelson

Man I love that you both loved this movie. One of my fav of all time. Whoopie and Oprah were so amazing.

Glenn Zigli

Goldberg, Winfrey, and Avery were all nominated for Oscars, and the film was nominated for Best Picture. 11 nominations in all. It won none. And that was a crime.

Column Meanie

True...very true. Luckily enough she can afford the therapy she'll need for selling out. ;

Holy crap. My favorite movie of all time. “I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice it. People think pleasing God is all God cares about. But any fool living in the world can see it always trying to please us back.”

Christopher Boutwell

But but art! -Alex

This is the only movie that…to this day…makes me cry like a baby. From the Christmas scene with Sophia…to the “God Is Trying To Tell You Somethin’” scene with Shug and her father…to the final reveal of Celie’s sister and children…no other movie before or since has brought the waterworks out of me. So, Alex, you’re not alone! For me, the key themes of this movie are forgiveness and redemption. I suppose that’s why I personally love having Mister at the end, realizing that, for once in his life, he did a selfless good. And that beautiful, symbolic last shot where he walks into frame…in front of the sun…shows his return to the light. Jesus, I’m tearing up now even writing this. Thank you, Alice and Steven.

Raphael Gaytan

Interesting. I watched this with my parents when I was so young that I didn't understand one second of it. I just filed it away under "Mom movies" in my head at the time. Maybe I'll give it another look now with you guys.

Steve Boshear

Oprah is LITERALLY a billionaire. I think she made the correct choices.

startrekiborg

I made my wife watch this 😂 Then she got to watch me cry my eyes out at the end.

Benjamin Azure

if i was part of the bridge crew, i'd have chosen Mississippi Burning. one of my favorites. if you havent seen it i reccomend checking it out at some point, not necessarily on the channel, but just in general. i think it won best picture? something like that.

penoyer79

I watched this when it first came out. I remember that it was a wonderful movie, and that I never wanted to put myself though watching it again. Maybe i will now have to watch it a second time

Jeffrey

Bold choice! One of the most important films of the last centry for cultural perspective.

Zee Doctere

Josh & Alex: Can you now look at Danny Glover the same way ever again? When you see him, will you think of Lethal Weapon…. Predator….. or THIS? Serious question.

Tom Occhipinti

Absolutely. Thanks for the request Tom!

Josh (Target Audience)

Hey, Josh… remember when I emailed you back and said I forgot to mention the cinematography….. and I had to include that in the list of powerful aspects about this movie? Now you understand how I couldn’t leave that out.

Tom Occhipinti

The funny thing is, when I requested this movie reaction, I completely forgot about the Guinan connection. Of course, I remembered that Whoopi Goldberg was in it. But I requested the movie because it was a great movie. Not because you would enjoy seeing Whoopi Goldberg in a pre-Guinan role. I only remembered that obvious connection after I sent in my request. But it was perfect. The thing about this… by the time I saw her in TNG, I already knew her from The Color Purple. And so I walked into her Guinan character with that in mind. However, you guys have a reverse experience: you took what you know of her in TNG, and saw her performance in this movie with that in mind. To this day, whenever I see Danny Glover in a movie, I’m immediately brought to THIS role in my mind. It took years before his role in Lethal Weapon sorta snuck in there too. But it’s still mostly this role that I think about when I see him elsewhere.

Tom Occhipinti

A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. I've been wanting to watch this since I haven't since I was pretty young, so this is a great chance to.

Anthony MacEwan

Beautiful and haunting film. Spielberg’s first attempt at real drama. Went over like a lead balloon because people expected Jaws or ET. In some ways this movie doesnt go far enough, especially in exploring the relationship between Celie and Shug (they are lovers in the book). And I will never agree with the ending which seems to forgive Mister for all the horrible things he put Celie through. Still, beautifully shot with beautiful music.
