“Hmmm… Silent Running”

“We’ve definitely been recommended this film quite a bit. This Blu-ray is made by Arrow Video, but it doesn’t seem to have much of a horror connection though. Looks to be straight up Sci-Fi. I’m not sure how we would fit it into our sched- wait… Does that say the runtime is 90 minutes?” *PURCHASES*

Seeing this, makes me wonder if Alex and Josh have seen Logan's Run

Steephill

That's my mom's favorite movie of all time

Steephill

Grat sets and effects, but the story doesn’t make any sense. You could summarise it as „man bad, nature good“.

Tim b

Watch it. It's a wonderful movie that's only become more prescient and not less.

Scott Withrow

I did like this movie when I was kid. It is actually great!

Kimmo Siniluoto

Good movie. I found it boring as a kid. I only watched it that once, but I remember it enough to appreciate it more as an adult.

startrekiborg

The music will sound terribly outdated (and everybody will hate me for saying this), so take it as a child of its era... But all in all, it's a memorable movie worth watching.

Juan de Salgado

Very good 70's sci-fi. Very much of its Era in done ways and ahead of it in others. I look forward to seeing your reaction.

Cirk Bejnar

I watched from the backseat of the Pinto, Dad was enjoying it, Mom fell asleep. My sister& brother were asleep. We loved going to the drive-in.

Blu Holbein

Not in the watching sense....but in digesting it later. It made me think...and I was 7 & didn't want to.

Blu Holbein

I love that movie

Blu Holbein

that's a neat little sci-fi film. not horror, but absolutely worth watching.

penoyer79

I also include 'THX1138' in that.

Numinous2019

With some of the movie suggestions here, I have to remind everyone that 'out there' movies like Zardoz, Barbarella, etc. are likely to drive Josh and Alex over the edge. Remember what kind of movies, stories and characters they've enjoyed previously. Don't nominate films that will provoke a negative watching experience.

Numinous2019

This is the film that made me worry about the environment. (I'll say no more.) And the opening credits appear while Joan Baez (icon of the Woodstock era / friend of Bob Dylan ... they both sang at the March on Washington where Dr. King gave his "I have a dream" speech) sings a song composed for the film. I can't think of another sci-fi movie with this kind of message... until, prehaps, the original Avatar (which in my opinion didn't do it as welll as this film did). Enjoy!

Steve Brant

Like Star Wars??

Jovet

You like short? React to "Peg", episode 2 of the Solos SciFi series on Amazon Prime. It's around 30 minutes or less. Each of the Solos series, as the name implied, focuses on one amazing actor in a short. Peg features the great British actress Helen Mirren (too many awards and credits to mention or even count). It's a master class in acting - one actor carrying an episode through monologue and amazing acting. Developing her character, revealing background, plot. Each episode is 99.9% independent and Peg can be watched on its own. Give it 5 minutes of your time and you'll be hooked.

Paul Hess

Ah yes, the inspiration for Mystery Science Theater 3000!

Darin Wagner

You might recognize the ships in this movie. You've watched the original Battle Star Galactica. The footage of the agro ships were "borrowed" from here.

This movie has a 70's Clunkiness to it that has it's charms, and clunk, and that's okay! Here's one for ya boys, 'Barbarella' - sci-fi, and young Jane Fonda, in a whirlwind of imagination and crazy visuals and music you'll have MUCH to react to and talk about!

The Fuppits

The score for this movie was composed by Peeter Shickele. Which amused me because he was well known for his PDQ Bach series. A collection of comical music which I enjoyed for a number of years. Sadly, he passed away a couple of years ago. PS Google the song Please Kind Sir.

Keith S

Indeed. It's your peak 70s sci-fi concept movie. Not a lot of action.

Axis 77

90 minute slow burn? 😳

Josh (Target Audience)

It's a slow burn...

Axis 77

One of the few films, sci fi or otherwise, that ever made me cry.

Steve Webster

There's an interesting story about how the robots were created for this 1972 film. It looks like there is another interesting story about where it was filmed with the film set name being connected to fictional set name. Bruce Dern, the leading actor, is still alive at age 88.

Chtphr Rrr

Walking trashcans!

Jasonn Pellegrini

Yes! After the holidays

Josh (Target Audience)

Whilst I do enjoy Zardoz, it's not something I'd recommend... For a Sean Connery sci-fi I'd suggest Outland - it's much less "out there" than Zardoz, and is only 4 minutes longer. Rollerball is great.

nigel valentine

Will we see a reaction to the Night Strangler, sequel to the Night Stalker?

Bob M

Long time since I saw this great film. Sci-fi yes horror no.

AzoriusMage

its the only version i know

Narnman

Douglas Trumbull is a LEGEND having been part of the VFX Team for Star Trek: The Motion Picture, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Blade Runner.....to name but a few!!! =D

James Knight

Hey guys, if you're looking for short (~90 min) 70s sci-fi, I'd like to recommend George Lucas', THX-1138 (1971) which is only 86 min. Also, Soylent Green (1973, 97 min.), Westworld (1973, 88 min). If you're willing to look for movies around 2 hrs or so, add Time After Time (1979, 112 min., Dir. by Nicolas Meyer, ST2: TWoK), Rollerball (1975, 125 min), The Andromeda Strain (1971, 131m, Dir. by Robert Wise), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978, 115m), and A Clockwork Orange (1972, 136 min). If you don't mind Disney, I'd like to recommend, The Black Hole (1979, 98 min.), which was Disney's first PG-rated movie. If you're a Sean Connery fan, I'll add Zardoz (1974, 105 min).

Ron

Definitely one to watch, I haven’t seen it in a long time would like to again.

Paul Rymer

You know, silent running is commonly associated with submarines!

Phil Ken Sebben

The ship in the film was also used as the "agro ship" in the original Battlestar Galactica

tyranusfan

I would not say horror or even Sci-Fi horror but many sci-fi fans love it ( I'm not one that does). I really have no prediction on what you guys will think. It is one of those "if it hooks you" you'll love it; but "if you phase out early" you'll find it boring.

Prof Moff

I don't think it's at all qualified as a horror movie, but I absolutely promise, you will not be sorry you bought it. Bear this in mind: this movie was years before "Star Wars." Huey, Louis and Dewey came long before R2D2.

Jonathan Sheen

That was showing at a Star Trek convention I went to in the 80s

Terminaldogma01

The actual situation makes virtually no sense, but once you accept the premise, it is a pretty impressive SF movie. Trumbull made it in part because his effects crew wasn't able to "do Saturn" for 2001. He did it here.

Michael Schwarz

Ive not seen it but the people who ha e seem to love it

harrypothead42024

The “horrors” of climate change.

Kurt Linke

Straight up sci-fi, needs to be judged for its time. It’s from an age when our society was just waking up to many problems that are now well known, and those who cared about it back then were marginalized and made fun of. This movie was meant to be cathartic for those of us who cared and it inspired me as a kid for all the decades since.

Paul Hess

George Lucas definitely saw this movie. Only 90 minutes? 🤔 True...

g g gooding

There's horror but not that kind.

Aaron Holden

Good movie for it's time. Rather dated now but worth a watch if you've never seen it.

Monty Crawford

It's straight up sci fi. Good movie though. Naw, for Halloween check out Alice, Sweet Alice.
