Of course Riker is in favour of Data jumping into a relationship :) It’s one of a few fun moments in an episode that feels like it should have been 2 separate ones.

Matthew McKinnon-Gray

It looks like we just lost ST:TNG and ST:VGR writer and showrunner Jeri Taylor a few days ago (10/24). Condolences to her friends, fans, and family.

Jeffrey P

Big time meh episode. It's interesting seeing Data trying to date, but it's kinda lame and awkward. Not the best, not the worst, but watchable.

Clyde Frog

Yeah, I think it's an interesting concept for an episode, but a little clunky, like it was written by a high school student that hasn't had a serious relationship yet. And of course The Serious Sci-Fi Threat had to be thrown in there. A "C" from me as well.

Jeffrey P

"A passionate kiss in the torpedo bay." Is that what the kids call it in the future? I would have gone with "aft thrusters" or "shuttle bay number two."

Jeffrey P

I had not seen this one before and, going into it I was really worried about how it would be handled, but I honestly have to say I really enjoyed it. It was A tier for me and this is coming from a guy whose dating skills were only slightly better than Data's (although my wife assures me I wasn't quite that awkward). I'm honestly surprised at the level of dislike directed at this one.

Nick Sauer

Yeah, it definitely was a shout out to the USS Eldridge.

Nick Sauer

The crewman being dropped halfway through the floor and killed makes me think. Star Trek meets the Philadelphia experiment

Thicketdweller

And now “spot” has a name I wonder which version of spot this was, And how many versions of spot were turned into feline supplement number XX

Thicketdweller

Data’s exploration of human relationships is clearly set forth both as an experiment in an attempt to grow. I have seen many human beings enter into relationships and be as inconsiderate and incomplete in the relationship as Data was however, in real life, I’ve seen many Jenna‘s stay with their automaton boyfriends because they don’t understand relationships either they just know they’re unhappy An incredible episode for trying to explore emotional relationships, and recognizing that many people, though involved in relationships were not ready for them I applaud the director and writers for giving Jenna the strength to move on and separate from Data instead of continuing in a hollow relationship

Thicketdweller

Is that Dr Pulaski I hear coming out of the turbo lift?

Owen Madden

Ah... someone's been wwatching The Orville!

Owen Madden

That's a valid choice. On the other hand, I respect and enjoy compelling well executed character development in what, in the final analysis is just a television show.

Owen Madden

One might say, that having is often not as fulfilling as wanting. It may not be logical, but alas, it is often true... Or word to that effect.

Owen Madden

An interesting episode, & a further explanation of Data's character. Jenna, though, is a rather weak & unbelievable character. She is a doormat waiting to be stomped on with muddy shoes. Then there is Sir Patrick's direction.... Star Trek's First Officers tend to make great directors. As for the Captains? Best they concentrate on their roles. In spite of the considerable flaws, I have to give this one an "A" simply for exploring this aspect of Data, that, come on - admit it - that we have all had questions about since "The Naked Now."

Owen Madden

They ignored that fact to include a silly sitcom line.

Joe Concepts

I’m sure Troi and Yar talked about how fully functional Data is, Troi knows what’s up 😂

marty63026

I don't find bad relationships very funny. Guess it's just me.

Jovet

Opening scene too cliché. 👎 I guess I should be relieved there are two performers that we don't actually know... out of a crew of 1000+...

Jovet

Up to now they have been convinced he has. Will be fun to see if that changes now. Spoiler alert: they still do think he has emotions.

Jovet

Yes 👍👍👍

Jovet

It's like watching a teenage boy ...discover himself... It's just not interesting or a compelling story, and it's pretty cringy to have to witness.

Jovet

"Honey, I am home" would have been on-character and increased the factor of amusement.

Jovet

Bingo! Hopefully this puts all that "but he has emotions!" silliness to bed.

Jovet

Because he IS limited!! He's not a human being.

Jovet

Very rare D for me.

Jovet

It is terrible. It's okay to admit it.

Jovet

I never registered that Data plays the oboe. Oh dear.

Jovet

It's pretty terrible.

Jovet

I DO NOT LIKE this episode. I don't quite hate it, but it's close. I am not going to enjoy watching it again. This episode is silly and misguided. Its only saving grace is it should put to rest those "theories" that "Data has emotions!" once and for all. He doesn't.

Jovet

This is cringe, not cute.

Jovet

I like this one. Data is not really prepared for an actual relationship but the sincerity of his attempts are endearing.

Alexander McKechnie

Sorry, but not a favorite for me. I'm fine with fun, light episodes, but this one just comes off as a little too cute for me. I do appreciate that Jenna kind of figures out on her own eventually that this was a bad idea, and that Data isn't capable of this sort of thing yet.

Joe Concepts

In a way i'm surprised that at the moment only 25% is showing A tier which is what i go for. Data episodes are usually popular, i guess some people might be put off by the comedy elements, which i love.

jon bolton

I watched this episode again so I could rate it. That's 45 minutes of my life I'm not getting back. It's not a terrible episode, but it's not good either. It's one of those really disappointing middle of the road episodes. Somehow, middling episodes are more disappointing than bad ones. C.

John

Data's day pt2 basically. Guys, guys, put the time machine away, at least wait a season before submitting more fanfic!

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

Some good stuff with Data, but an otherwise forgettable episode.

JoeCensored

Yeah, …no.

rear adm. crackbiscuit

That's my guess. "DID IT ALL FOR THE COMMUNITYYYYYY"

JGoss

In an effort to understand relationships and be a better boyfriend, Data briefly turns into Lore..............it didn't work out. Also Spot used up one of those 9 lives to not end up like Floor Lady.

Timothy Nikiforovs

2x15?

Timothy Nikiforovs

Forget everything else...this gets an A for the most shocking death scene in Star Trek!

David Wayne Fox

Look at our boy all grown up! 🥹 this b plot sucks worst than asking an android for dating advice, but the data plot hits hard ! Solid A

Sixto

Unfortunately, as with most episodes Patrick Stewart directed, it's fairly boring and forgettable (except for that death!).

Ian Westcott

The B-plot was much better than the A-plot.

Ron Hubbard Jr

One of the most horrific crew member deaths in TNG, and that's saying something. Picard directs! Data does his best to be a good boyfriend to Jenna but it isn't enough. His line to her after the breakup "Then I will delete the appropriate program" is really kind of heartbreaking. I have it ranked as "Excellent".

KatWithAttitude

When Spot IS a girl. That cat changed gender and appearance more times than I can remember.

Regan

I like this episode. Given everything the writers were doing with Data, it was only a matter of time before they tackled this topic. What's both silly (and a little sad) is how--as I've gotten older--I relate very personally to Data, especially in this episode, f'naaa. Two other take-aways is that this is Patrick Stewart's directorial debut in Trek, and hory fucking shiet does the B-plot give us unexpected nightmare fuel.

Shortskirtsandexplosions

Honey I'm home

Narnman

Patrick Stewart’s first directorial effort. He said he was lucky to get a Data episode, as those always went over well. Continuity Alert: Worf mentions that the windows are transparent aluminum, the same as what Scotty traded Dr. Nichols for the plexiglass he used to build the whale tank.

tyranusfan

I love this episode. This is a lovely segue from Data's talk with Troi on how he has not "ruled out getting married." And I find the ending an interesting precursor to the concepts behind, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," which came later (2004)...

Who North America

A couple missed opportunities for this episode to be something more, but any episode carefully exploring Data's humanity is still worth at least an A. Some fun moments too.

Dan Halstead

Spots the only girl data needs

LonghillAndy

C+. Its another angle at the traditional love story, let down with the guest actress who is kinda annoying. Although as it's played for comedy, it's just about tolerable. And of course, Patrick Stewart directing means that Picard *has* to pilot the shuttle alone to guide the ship out of the nebula - despite there being dozens of competent pilots aboard (maybe better than him, except for lack of plot arnour). Just about watchable, but meh for any rewatch value. Good case here to consider adding a new 'Yes/No' episode criteria for Season 5 onwards - 'Would you want to watch this again' perhaps..? 😄

The Ninth Doctor

Very good, 8.4/10, A+. Super underrated imo and one of my favorites. B-Plot's decently interesting, pretty disturbing death, but obv I just care about the A-Plot. Data's my favorite character and its cool to see him in his first relationship, which I'd consider possibly the most important part of life on Earth (or in space). I do think he did seem a little TOO emotionless at times, but it doesn't really affect my opinion of the episode. Seeing a (mostly) emotionless man trying to naviagate a heavily emotional situation like this was very interesting. Something about that last shot was very chilling, more so than any shot of actual sadness could have been, as it confirms that, as much as we'd like to believe, and as he no doubt wishes, the experience never truly brought him happiness. The last scene overall hits hard. Prob the most underrated so of TNG imo

Steven Cressler

B for me. Really enjoyed the honest exploration of Data's attempt at a human relationship. Aside from a few cringey moments (e.g. Data faux angry), I thought the writing here was quite deft and honest about Data's strengths and limitations and how, from Jenna's perspective, what we THINK we want in a relationship isn't always what makes a great relationship.

Lovok

I successfully repressed most of this episode. Not that it's terrible, but cringe and boring enough to skip when re-watching the show.

Tim b

For me a comedy episode worthy of A.

jon bolton

I almost expected it. He seemed to think other odd things were part of a relationship.

Crankygrandma

Well said. I had trouble putting my finger on why I disliked this one so much, other than I cringed a lot, but you hit the nail on the head. This episode is rather pointless and there is no growth.

Crankygrandma

Another Cringy episode. We have some really good episodes this season but a few that are not good. The idea sounds like a good follow up to Data saying he was interested in experiencing marriage a few episodes ago, but the way they executed this was downright embarrassing. It had a few good moments but overall it’s one I skip. I will give it a “C” because I’m in a generous mood.

Crankygrandma

I feel like this episode portrays Data as being a bit too limited. I'm also not too sure what the takeaway is at the end. That Data is incapable of growing further? He definitely didn't learn anything in this episode. He just has an awkward relationship and there is no character growth that comes from it. Isn't the point of Data supposed to be that he is more than just a machine? I just feel like Data regresses as a character after this one.

Spencer Loften

At least he didn't show up in dirty underwear and a nasty wife beater T.

Matt Newmark

Data deleting her file in front of her is an ice cold sigma male playa move.

Greg Quinn

This episode is well-placed in the season and series overall. At this point, I think the production team was getting the sense that the audience was seeing emotions in Data that aren't there. And this is kind of a reminder that maybe we were just seeing the emotions that we wanted to see in Data.

THE LORE!!!

For me it's not the subject matter; I like the idea of using Data to examine parts of our lives that we take for granted and dont really look at critically. I just didnt think they did a very good job of executing that in this episode.

Pokeysaurus

"Honey, I'm home!" Apparently Data CAN use contractions if he's quoting something or using a special program to say it. Maybe he should use that as a workaround. Or the writers just forgot again.

JGoss

My nails on a chalkboard guest actor isn't until DS9 S2, ugh, I have squim through that episode.

Nolan

Shoulda been titled "Data's Date" It's a fine episode, interesting to see Data in a new situation. Patrick Stewart is in the director's chair for the first time, so of course he calls this his favorite episode of Star Trek.

Nolan

B. I actually found the B plot to be more interesting. Features one of the most disturbing deaths in a Star Trek. I mean getting stuck in the floor? Creepy.

Keith S

This might have been a better episode with better casting. The actress just has a nails on chalkboard voice especially when she gets whiny. What saves this episode is the nightmare fuel of the lady in the floor. That might get a Remmick head explode reaction out of you. I also predict this will be one where you mockingly bring up "THE PLOT!"

JGoss

I don't get the hate for this ep (even if I only rated it a B myself). TNG figured out in the last couple seasons that Data is a great way of doing a kind of "wikipedia-level examination" of human behaviour and concepts and this episode really is about putting romance and relationships under a microscope to poke and prod and laugh at in a way that no other TV show at the time could. And Patrick Stewart's direction was rock solid for his first time behind the camera.

The Sultan

This one's ok, but Data's Day does this better. Jenna's not very interesting, and I always forget about this episode. Good concept, but I feel like they could have done this better somehow. B for could have been better.

BN13

This episode is a speed bump for the audience regarding Data’s evolution. He while well meaning is not ready for all aspects of human life. I have always wanted to yell “PERHAPS THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOU!” At my wife. This one is a bit awkward. Very forgettable

Phil Ken Sebben

I think this episode serves as a reality check for the audience and how we all tend to project more humanity onto Data than is actually there. Despite how the actor's performance and other writers in past episodes hint otherwise, he is in fact not a 'real boy'. I love Data and Brent Spiner, but just calling it how I see it. Overall, a good not great episode, and it gets a B from me.

Forbidden Donut

Another episode I hang on the cliff about the rating, but I will again give it the benefit due to Brent Spiner's acting and give it a B.

Collin Freeman

Does that say Directed by Patrick Stewart? Look at our boy go. Wish it was a little better, but decent first try

Elway Simpson

People are gonna vote this low, but TA (and many of us) thrive on slice-of-life episodes, and I think this one impacts more because of Data’s Day making Data’s thought processes and perspectives more understandable to us all. Troi did say it, “Data, you -do- have a lot to offer!”

Ross Townsend

C episode for me. A lot of good, and lot of really bad. Interesting concept, but I just couldn't fully buy into it. *shrug*

wildhunt1973

Well when Data said he was considering a romantic relationship it was legit. I like how to Data, it’s a subroutine that he needs to perfect but to Jenna she is having feelings for a man that cannot share those feelings, only learn how to respond to her emotions. B tier

marty63026

Hearing the Lieutenant scream and then seeing her morphed into the ground is probably the most chilling moment of the season. I would imagine Picard’s letter to inform her family was… interesting.

Evan Guthrie

Curious as to what your takeaway is from this one - does Data really have emotions of a sort, or are we (and Jenna) projecting emotions onto him because we want him to have emotions?

Steven Linden

It's nice to see the O'Briens with Data and his new love interest...oh and Patrick Stewart gets a turn in the Director's chair.
