This episode hits so much harder now, at age 64, than it did when I first saw it at age 30. Solid S-tier.

2024-11-16 19:04:00 +0000 UTCStunning portrayal of Lwaxanna by Majel Barrett .Definite S tier for me.Up to now there has always been a comedic aspect to the character though I have often wondered about the loneliness inherent in her continual hunt for a partner. But this time , my God, she knocks it out of the park. The compassion , the empathy, the bravery she shows gives us a whole new insight into what makes Lwaxanna such a force of nature. I always find this episode deeply moving . The whole cast is incredible . Ultimately there is no satisfying outcome and the tradition of Resolution - death at sixty - carries on regardless. Picard cannot change the inevitable, but to air this controversial topic was exceptional in the nineties. We are still debating euthanasia today - whose choice should it be? Star Trek leading the way as always.

2024-11-05 16:40:40 +0000 UTCIt's one of my favourite episodes of the entire show. In the hands of Ogden Stiers and Majel Barrett, the spark between Timicin and Lwaxana is palpable. I truly believed it was powerful enough to make this stoic man rethink his entire way of life. "Almost enough... but not quite". It's beautifully played out in thoughtful dialogue. Not afraid to say I wept several times, particularly when his daughter comes aboard. Michelle Forbes making a huge impact on the producers, as we will find out. The final line, "We are ready, Mr O'Brian" carries such profound dignity and gravitas, and we're left watching Picard come to terms with what has happened. A brilliant episode.

2024-11-02 18:13:05 +0000 UTCThat opening shot of the opening turbo-lift - and Picard peeking around to be sure "She" isn't there - is one of the most hysterical moments in 'Trek history. And there wasn't a word spoken - until "She" calls out his name from down the corridor. TOO FUNNY!

2024-11-01 17:17:46 +0000 UTCThis story's PURE DRAMA takes the place of high adventure in a way that made me forget about action-adventure: This became a Mrs. Trio Story in which the main cast took a back-seat (--which in this case wasn't bad at all because the storyline was so powerful--), and also the B-plot (Lwaxanna after yet another man, LOL) became so intertwined with the A-plot (how to fix the errant star) that no amount of so-called action-adventure entered my mind: the personal drama between the two guest characters became more engrossing and engaging (forgive the pun) than I'd seen in 'Trek for a while, making this become one of my all-time favorite episodes. I was openly weeping for Mrs. Troi as she explained her grief to Deanna in the transporter room. Now, in 2024, my own mom is in a nursing home, and I am facing exactly what this story was all about - so it's poignant to me as a person as well as poignant to me as a Star Trek fan who realized and appreciated the allegory. WOW, Majel's performance takes the character to a whole new level and depth (!!), proving what I've come to realize about the entire Star Trek saga: 'Trek endues because every actor, director, writer, production person - AND character in every story - does what they do OUT OF LOVE. That's what makes humanity worth a Star Trek future - our capacity to love, which provides the surest foundation for living long and prospering.

2024-11-01 17:00:08 +0000 UTCI read about the use of the MAID program, it's pretty scary.

2024-10-28 20:20:19 +0000 UTCWho would have thought the next Luwaxana Troi episode would take a sharp turn out of comedic relief territory into a drama about the value of older life? One cannot ignore that Majel Barrett, in real life, was dealing with Gene Roddenberry declining. By this time he would come to conventions in a wheelchair. Sometime in that next year he would pass away. She must of brought a lot of what she was going through to this performance.
Mike Rogers
2024-10-28 20:18:54 +0000 UTCAh, the euthanasia episode? Keep in mind at this time when Star Trek was being produced the infamous Dr. Kevorkian was helping with assisted suicide around the country regularly until he was in prison. Is euthanasia a good thing, Is euthanasia a bad thing, Is it an individuals right to the side , the path of euthanasia for themselves, or is it entirely up to society as to whether or not, you should be euthanized, To me society, deciding who should and should not be euthanized is fascism in its finest form, and is the kind of thing that Nazi Germany did repeatedly by just executing those they thought were weak, these deaths were above and beyond the holocaust persecution of Jews, this was just Hitler’s Way of ridding his society of week “vermin“ that sucked the life out of their country. A concept that in America is so unsupportable and yet there are many who try to push it as the way of life we should be following The part that makes this episode an S and puts it over the top is they could not stop the euthanasia, The societal indoctrination was so complete that even though he wished to remain alive to spend his time with Troy‘s mother, He gave into the societal pressures that were Imposed upon him by his daughter played by Michelle Forbes, one of the great actors to appear in science fiction Many people don’t like this episode based on the concept of euthanasia presented so readily, But as we can see from history, the question of euthanasia has had its moments where it was supported, and where it was denied. Star Trek wanted to make sure that this Outrageously touchy topic was one that was covered through a science fiction lens to help clarify exactly what it is you seeing when you think of euthanasia

2024-10-26 17:38:16 +0000 UTCWow, the best Lwaxana episode I have ever seen. It's amazing how well she works when used as an actual character as opposed to a caricature.

2024-10-23 20:51:43 +0000 UTCThis is one of my absolute favorite Episodes. Maybe mainly by the outstanding performance by David Ogden Stiers. The premise is interesting but not the main Element nor is it the dying Star. It is the Emotional journey of this Man. The Quest he has, the new found love but also his old convictions and sure love for his family. That strikes me everytime i look it.

2024-10-22 07:09:12 +0000 UTCDavid Ogden Stiers of M*A*S*H fame! What a guest star! I love Lwaxana in this. This is a new flavor on her usual antics where we first get a real look at the tragic angle of her character.

2024-10-21 23:16:06 +0000 UTCOh boy. An interesting premise but not for me. But the actor playing Timicins daughter - Michelle Forbes? Watch this space 😉

2024-10-21 17:20:18 +0000 UTCAh yes, the good Lwaxana episode. Well, statistically there had to be one.

2024-10-20 02:39:46 +0000 UTCUsually I love Lwaxanna episodes, she's generally a good comic relief character, but this is my second least favourite with her. Although, i do love the actress, Michelle Forbes who guest starred as the daughter of Lwaxanna's boyfriend. I give it C!

2024-10-18 17:59:10 +0000 UTCThis is probably my favorite Luwaxana Troi episode of TNG. There are some other contenders, but this is a very strong outing and Majel Barrett's chemistry with David Ogden Stires is good. Probably not a coincidence that it's the first in which she's not overbearing or acting as if she's fully in control of the situation the whole time.

2024-10-18 14:56:39 +0000 UTCLike I've been saying for some time..... from Season to season and on out from here, Star Trek RAMPS UP story-telling in many ways. The entire 'Trek saga (from TOS through all the rest) gets better all the time. .... You guys are in for a hell of a fun, wild ride!
Rhett Coates
2024-10-17 17:09:14 +0000 UTCThat's one of the scenes that left me weeping for Majel's character, and knowing what was going on in her real life with Gene made the impact of the dilemma all the more poignent.
Rhett Coates
2024-10-17 16:57:26 +0000 UTCSeveral times during this episode I found myself openly weeping for Lwaxana, and ended up having NEW AND TOTAL RESPECT for her. She was made, here, to be a full and thoughtful woman, and from then on I hoped she would return again and again to Star Trek.

2024-10-17 16:49:17 +0000 UTCI blame Picard. He should have just married Lwaxana and made her happy. Then Riker could have been his son in law (kinda).

2024-10-17 00:41:54 +0000 UTCMajel Barrett shows she can act more than the one note. Having grown up in the 70’s, it’s a testament to Stiers’ performance that I wasn’t distracted by the significant physical presence of Col. Winchester. Nice swerve to get a solid heavy theme when Lwxana’s mere presence foreshadows silliness.

2024-10-16 01:35:04 +0000 UTCHard S .one of hardest hitting episodes in the entire franchise. undoubtedly the best Lwaxana episode. great acting by all involved

2024-10-15 23:55:36 +0000 UTCI see your point, and that may very well be her intention, but being a part of the ceremony signals to the society a form of participation and acceptance of the grotesque practice. That choice by the writers brings the episode down a whole grade for me. If anything, she should have made peace with him just prior to the actual ceremony and then either returned to the Enterprise or stay and peacefully protest to try to inspire change.
Lovok
2024-10-15 14:12:34 +0000 UTCBarrett and Stiers absolutely carry this episode, and it's a welcome evolution of Lwaxana, no doubt informed by the imminent death of Gene Roddenberry. I can only give it an A however as the episode takes too neutral a stance on euthanasia IMO. I'm sure we can all sympathize with someone who's life is constant suffering wanting to end it, but these people are willing to doom their world rather than give Timicin a few more years, and nobody besides Lwaxana calls out the foolishness or immorality of it. As a Canadian, I've seen how quickly institutionalized euthanasia can turn into a barbaric nightmare.

2024-10-15 13:32:39 +0000 UTCI was going to make some golden bachelorette joke, but this episode makes me sad for all the right reasons, and it is without a doubt the BEST Lwaxana episode so far.
Sixto
2024-10-15 12:18:29 +0000 UTCI don't view her participating as in any way approving of the custom. I think she just decided that if it was going to happen, he might as well have someone there who isn't itching to discard him. Give him some semblance of happiness/companionship in his last moments.
Timothy Nikiforovs
2024-10-15 10:55:28 +0000 UTCAbsolutely with out a doubt, one of the finest moments in the series. Holy Effing S-Tier. Also, best way to give Picard an immediate panic attack: "My mother is on board."
Ian Westcott
2024-10-15 06:01:55 +0000 UTCWithout a doubt, the best Lwaxana Troi episode of TNG and I'm not much of a fan of the character.
Ron Hubbard Jr
2024-10-15 05:05:33 +0000 UTCDeanna's opening log entry will definitely make you laugh. Lwaxana is her usual pushy self for most of it, but she truly has a heart and it shows. I wonder which of his many roles you will recognize David Ogden Stiers from, if you recognize him at all. I have it ranked as "Excellent".
KatWithAttitude
2024-10-15 03:05:02 +0000 UTCWith as many appearances that she's made, it was about time that we got to see Lawaxana handle a legitimate serious, more mature, melancholic situation... and thus we see far more depth to her character and Majel Barrett's acting to boot. Yes, the social commentary is there to be commented on as well, but I really like seeing everyone put on their game faces for succulent romantic drama. As a bonus, we get to see David Ogden Stiers do a fantastic cameo, which finally gives me the opportunity to present this long-awaited question: When are you two gonna stop being cowards and react to all 251 episodes of M*A*S*H. I mean, come on, bros. (Just kidding [or am I{?}])
Shortskirtsandexplosions
2024-10-15 02:04:26 +0000 UTCThe Winchester episode! Featuring David Ogden Stiers from M*A*S*H*. This episode gives Lwaxanna a chance to be a little less of a caricature and more of a real person.
Regan
2024-10-15 01:48:22 +0000 UTCA different kind of Lwaxana story. Starts out fun, then takes a turn. It’s something to consider that Gene was very ill at this time. This probably hit at a lot of levels for Majel and the cast and crew.

2024-10-15 00:00:27 +0000 UTCI think this is the first Lwaxana episode where she isn't insufferable. Doesn't mean it's a great episode, I hate the ending, but it shows that there is potential here.

2024-10-14 21:23:00 +0000 UTCAn episode were lwaxana isn’t just the comic relief and I’m all for it on this one, but I don’t know if it’s the pacing in 45 minutes it just doesn’t tug on my heart strings as it’s obviously meant to but still an enjoyable watch
LonghillAndy
2024-10-14 21:19:54 +0000 UTCA personal favorite of mine. David Ogden Stiers slays this role with his quiet intensity and flares of emotion. Majel Barret Roddenberry finally gets a role that respects Lwaxana as a character with some depth and seriousness, and she manages to pull it off without betraying any of the ridiculous character buildup from prior seasons but instead embracing it and turning it into something sensible. Michelle Forbes with an awesome one-off appearance adding context and intensity to the plot while sporting the most ridiculous hairdo in sci-fi history.
Paul Hess
2024-10-14 21:15:52 +0000 UTCB tier, mainly as this is the first Lwaxana episode where she has something tangible to stand for. Elevated when considering that in real life Majel Barrett was likely caring for Gene in his own decline, drawing some hard parallels with her own life and this story.
The Ninth Doctor
2024-10-14 21:05:50 +0000 UTCC for me. A surprisingly nuanced and good performance from Majel here. Appreciate the added complexity they give her character. Great guest actor appearance here from David Ogden Stires. A very interesting premise that really tests the limits of respect for other cultures. (I do NOT think all cultures should be respected -- e.g. the Mayans.) I like that the episode honestly explores both sides of the core issue, but I ultimately feel it's one of the rare times TNG ends up leaning on one side, and the wrong side at that. Lwaxana's participation at the end was a real disappointment. Sends a terrible message. If it weren't for that ending scene, would have been a B for me.
Lovok
2024-10-14 20:53:41 +0000 UTCGood, 7.3/10, B-Tier. Objectively this episode is much better than I ranked it but I found some parts slightly boring. The ethical/philosophical questions and moral dilemma are great tho and a large part of what makes Star Trek Star Trek. Also cool to see Lwaxana have a deeper more humanized role. I should like this one more than I do.

2024-10-14 20:45:55 +0000 UTCWhat about that one in S7?

2024-10-14 20:44:20 +0000 UTCThe scientist performance saves this from an E for me. Even now Lwaxana is grating my soul as I am typing this

2024-10-14 20:17:25 +0000 UTCOne episode where Luaxana is a three dimensional person.
Greg Quinn
2024-10-14 18:35:51 +0000 UTCLwaxana is better each time she visits, and this is her best episode so far. David Ogden-Stiers believably falls for her, and it’s the real deal as he causes a planetary incident by deciding to stay with her. The ending made my bawl (English for cry my eyes out). Gene Roddenberry was involved in this episode and it’s poignant that he would pass away a few months later. David Ogden Stiers and Majel Barrett rehearsed their scenes at Gene’s home and he was able to have input.
Paul Rymer
2024-10-14 18:07:22 +0000 UTCEchoing everyone else - a Lwaxana Troi episode that is actually good. Who'd a thunk it?

2024-10-14 18:00:13 +0000 UTCThe BEST Lwaxana episode, no question.
JGoss
2024-10-14 17:06:25 +0000 UTCThis is one of my favorite TNG episodes. Great guest actor , very strong moral questions that never became two dimensional. A clear S to me. Good Sci Fi, doing what good classic sci fi does: explores human moral issues, and tells the story without sounding like a sermon. It just lets the story unfold and leaves you thinking. Maybe weeping a little.
Crankygrandma
2024-10-14 17:02:44 +0000 UTCHonestly one of the best Lwaxana episodes so far. Great ethical debate on a bizzare alien custom and what our response and role should be as we observe it from the outside. And here you meet Michelle Forbes who has but one scene, and despite the goofiest frakking hairstyle, just effing kills it with her acting.
Nolan
2024-10-14 16:57:04 +0000 UTCGets an A, loved David Ogden Stires as a guest star. Majel Barett was great at playing in a bitter sweet romance. The seen between her and Deana in the transport room was quite touching.

2024-10-14 16:55:26 +0000 UTCBy far Luxwana's best appearance!
Max Yoder
2024-10-14 16:25:35 +0000 UTCI can't stand Luxwana (which is a credit to Majel Barrett's performance of her) and while there's some value in seeing her manipulative bullshit explode in her face for once, the whole process is frustrating and cringy rather than satisfying. And its a shame because the themes of the episode are actually really good and this is definitely one of those rare TREK episodes where they ask a philosophical and ethical question that they can't answer and don't answer, but rather leave it for the audience to ponder.
The Sultan
2024-10-14 16:22:01 +0000 UTCFantastic episode about coping with aging. Lwaxana isn’t a preying on men this time she is genuinely moved by her relationship with Major Winchester. Majel’s acting here is a powerful performance and just kills it. We have not seen this vulnerability and passion from her before. It really rounds out her character. The star reignition plot doesn’t step on this too badly. I think you guys will like this one. I did
Phil Ken Sebben
2024-10-14 16:10:40 +0000 UTCIt may be an A tier, but I'm going with S tier because of the raw emotions that come out of the characters, and they really tug at my heartstrings. I like how this gave Lwaxana Troi more depth as a character, and it's an interesting / disturbing premise to chew on, which can often be a great quality of Science Fiction. Also a great performance by David Ogden Stiers as Timicin.
Forbidden Donut
2024-10-14 15:57:29 +0000 UTCI think this is my favorite Lwaxana episode. I've actually always liked Lwaxana, but she has a lot of narcissistic moments in her earlier episodes that get more insufferable for me as I get older. This episode redeems those moments by humanizing her and showing that she's actually very vulnerable. It's the first time you get a real glimpse into why she acts the way that she does. Plus, as a very reserved introvert, I really like and feel represented by Temison. I find myself thinking about this episode a lot, and the ending is heartbreaking. A/S tier for me.

2024-10-14 15:32:13 +0000 UTCI actually.....really like this Lwaxana episode. Also, is that a Michelle Forbes sighting? Loved her in Homicide: Life on the Street

2024-10-14 15:12:08 +0000 UTCGreat use of Lwaxana, she's the right person to call out stupid traditions.

Ross Townsend
2024-10-14 15:00:34 +0000 UTCC-tier for me. I don't think it's a bad episode, really, and I do give the writers credit for doing a serious story with Lwaxana. But I don't find the actor playing Timicin very compelling, and the story just feels very flat to me.
Steven Linden
2024-10-14 14:58:58 +0000 UTCEasily the best Lwaxana episode thus far, and David Ogden Stiers puts in one of my favorite guest performances on the show. Having to see relatives grow old and fade away, this really affected me. The show illuminates how much people tend to devalue the lives of the elderly, but also reflects our own fears of growing old and useless. The show offers no easy answers. You would think that the solution would be simply not taking part in the ritual, and yet it actually drives a wedge between Timicin and his family.

2024-10-14 14:54:37 +0000 UTCDavid Ogden Stires of M*A*S*H fame and Majel deliver powerfully in this episode as a great guest pair

2024-10-14 14:36:41 +0000 UTCUgh. Second bad episode in a row for me. Another episode that I just...hate. Luxwana was just overbearing, pushing herself onto a man who liked her but wasn't quite ready for her, then she almost ruins him in the eyes of his people. Nothing in this episode worked. Next.
wildhunt1973
2024-10-14 14:33:26 +0000 UTCthis episode is great, it the first time we really see Lwaxana Troi utilized seriously, with a good theme behind the character that isn't comic relief, she really had some growth by the end, and showing the different of culture and how it can clash
Dark Kronis
2024-10-14 14:32:23 +0000 UTCThis is Troi's mother at her most tolerable. And she still has her disturbingly tall assistant, so that'll rate it some points. I wanted to rate this quite a bit lower than I do, but I recently watched it again, and it wasn't as bad as I remember. Nothing next to the previous episode, but it's not a terrible episode.

2024-10-14 14:16:21 +0000 UTCThis is a very weird episode, but I’ve always enjoyed how Star Trek respects the cultures that they invent, even if they might not reflect the current values of society.

2024-10-14 14:15:26 +0000 UTCWelp, you got it. I think this is her best episode to date. Lwaxana is great in the episode and it’s heartbreaking at the end when he decides to go through with his suicide. That conversation with his daughter is top TNG writing and acting. A tier for me, great!
