It is the quintiseential filler episode that people seem to lament having in the modern TV format. I don't miss these kind of episodes. It was fine, Riker and Guinan are always awesome but Deanna has few strong episodes and most of them come later in the series. I feel like Sigourney Weaver's character from Galaxy quest is an amalgam of Deanna from TNG and Uhura from TOS in that they are somewhat underdeveloped characters that are there mainly to be hot.Don;t get it twisted, I like her character but episodes like this show how the writers often just didn't know what to do with her. Much like the warp core, transporters, or holodeck, her seeming insane powers go on the fritz whenever dramatically appropriate because if they didn't then every episode with person to person dilemmas would be immediately solved. If not already mentioned; Riker says "Imzadi" it's Betazed for beloved. It is a relic from their previous involvement. Not "I'm Sorry". He calls her that many times throughout the series.

And yes, Riker said “Imzadi,” which Troi called him in the pilot. I can understand you missing things in your first viewing, but I just wish you wouldn’t judge episodes on mishearings like this. There’s so many things that we know you guys miss in your first viewings of episodes that you mention or criticize, but one day you will eventually rewatch and pick them up the next time and understand better. It’s not a big deal that you guys miss details, we all do, but it’s only sad when it potentially becomes a critique of the episode.

To be fair, I enjoyed your Elf going to sleep movie story… I used to do something like that too. Can’t remember what movies it was to!

“Are you guys going to sit there and tell me that you watch this episode with the 2d species and think the b plot is good enough?” Let me go a little Deanna on you. Yes, exactly that. Because you guys are frankly still teenagers in Star Trek at best, only seeing this episode 1-2 times and making strong judgments about it, compared to others who have seen these episodes for years and years and multiple times. The point of the 2d species is not only that (1) they point to what Deanna is feeling, like she is looking at everyone in 2d with no depth emotionally, but also (2) that the rest of the crew are feeling the same way Deanna is with her loss of communication, because they can’t “read” or communicate with this 2d species (and figure out who they are or what they want). As Deanna gets more and more frustrated with her situation, feeling helpless and carried along through life with the loss of her control in each new situation, the crew is feeling more and more frustrated and helpless to understand and communicate with this 2d species as they have “lost” their ability to communicate and are carried along without their will, without power to control their ship and the situation, and it’s a mirror to them and to the audience of Deanna’s situation. I mean, what else do you want from this b plot? After you guys mature into Star Trek a bit more, I’m sure you will understand some of the “b plots” better that you always rag on, that almost always have a bigger emphasis than you understand in one sitting. That’s the mark of a great show, rewarding fans with each new viewing. If you think I’m being hard on you guys, it’s just that I lost my empathic powers recently and I’m mad at everyone, especially the crew. You don’t know what this is like. But honestly, we are only as hard on you guys as you guys are hard on the show. 😉

That's the Marina Sirtis I met at the Star Trek Convention in San Antonio, Texas

The tough love idea is a good one... but honestly Beverly had a bit of that and it was done better. She was coming at it from the "yeah this sucks, but this is where we're at" angle. She showed empathy, but was brutally honest about things.

I don't think that Riker said "I'm sorry." I think it was Imzadi which is Betazed for "my beloved" which they occasionally use to refer to each other.

Imagine you work in facility for people born with various disabilities, like those born without arms. One day you’re in an accident and you lose an arm. Yeah, that sucks ass, but are you really going to complain to those born like that? If anything, they’d understand the most. At the very least, don’t be a dick to them. It’s not about the bad thing happening to you, it’s also about the way you react to it, it shows how you really are. Troi is kinda aristocratic. Overall, this is kinda a D episode, there are better Troi episodes.

Troi episodes hit and miss..long as it's not her mother though. Guinan is the saving grace here. 5% Guinan works 100% of the time D+

Congratulations on getting halfway through TNG!

For me this episode is a solid A. Troi is my O'Brien: an underrated character I always want to see more of, and Marina Sirtis is an actor who always rises to the occasion whenever she's given anything of substance to do. I loved how she bitched out everyone in the crew: it showed that she's a three-dimensional person, not a cardboard cutout Starfleet perfect person. Troi was panicking this entire episode; the way she reacts to this is bitchiness and impatience and drama. And yet she has a specific skill set no one else in the main crew does. She's a trained psychologist. She specializes in the psychology of alien races, and it's nice to occasionally see that. As much as Guinan is good at listening to people, she isn't a trained alien psychology / first contact specialist like Troi is. And I have to disagree on your now-becoming-standard reaction to the "ship's business B-plots": I like seeing the Enterprise crew dealing with random science-fiction stuff. By the way, I think Riker was saying "Imzadi" in the Betazoid language. "Imzadi" is Riker and Troi's old romantic term of endearment for each other from when they were a couple, it basically means "my love".

Charlie's Illiteracy

Troi does get some good episodes, but this wasn't one of them.

Riker wasn’t saying “I’m sorry,” he was saying “Imzadi.” It’s a Betazoid word meaning roughly beloved or dear one. It’s a term they used when they were dating. Also, sorry if this posted multiple times. My phone is having signal issues and I think it’s trying to repost.

Yes, going blind doesn't make a person's ear drums work better. They're unrelated to the condition of the eyes. What DOES happen is one's FOCUS upon hearing increases, so hearing for that person becomes more relevant. I used to believe that hearing improves.... but it just ain't so.
