I always felt Season 1 was really messy and unpolished, but it was pretty evenly "meh" quality. Not awful, but nothing is exactly great either. Season 2 had episodes that were far worse than anything S1 had (except maybe Code of Honor)

When you were asking "where are the bad episodes", I don't think most people thought Season 1 was straight up unwatchable. However, the vast majority of episodes are ones you will never go back to. Most of them, you will never even think about. So yes, it is one of the worst seasons of Trek. I think 18 episodes being C or lower is accurate.

Naturally most would be C and D when episodes like Yesterday's Enterprise and Sarek are on your minds.

Different people like different aspects, and we/they forget we’ve been with this for decades. It takes years to digest this stuff sometimes. In BOBW, when the Enterprise unloads a barrage of phasers and photon torpedoes at the cube, I get jacked. But at the same time an episode like The Offspring breaks my heart, and writing matters. What matters to you is valid. And again, for a first watch, you guys have a first impression, and we can all fuck off lol. If we all agreed, it would be a boring place.
