Not en episode I remembered and a little weaker than some but fun to see Shatner in action

Thanks, this was a fun watch and I haven't seen any of these in years.

Great episode.

I'd definitely be up for watching DUEL. I haven't watched it in quite a long time.

Like Josh, one of the things I like best about this episode is that, depending on how the viewer interprets the story, it may possibly involve no sci-fi, fantasy or supernatural element at all. There are a handful of "Twilight Zone" episodes ("Where Is Everybody?", "Nightmare as a Child", "The Silence", "The Shelter", "The Jeopardy Room", possibly some others I'm forgetting) in which this is explicitly the case, but it's unusual for an episode's genre to remain ambiguous throughout. Given that Alex and Josh commented on Shatner's character and his wife initially sitting on the same side of the table, I was surprised they didn't point out that they sit on opposite sides after returning to the diner, when the fortune-telling machine is driving a wedge between them. The hapless couple at the end sit on the same side because they have both succumbed to the machine's influence. Richard Matheson, the writer of both "Nick of Time" and "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" as well as many other "Twilight Zone" episodes, also wrote "The Enemy Within"! Patricia Breslin (Pat Carter, the wife of Shatner's character) also guest-starred in "No Time Like the Past," one of the hour-long "Twilight Zone" episodes. ("The Twilight Zone" was a half-hour show for Seasons 1, 2, 3 and 5, and an hour-long show for Season 4. Rod Serling came to regard the longer timeslot as a mistake, and many "Twilight Zone" fans agree with him.) Ironically, given that "Nick of Time" is set in Ohio, Breslin later married Art Modell! Breslin died in 2011; Shatner is now the only surviving credited cast member from "Nick of Time." The post-apocalyptic episode with one man and one woman is called "Two" (Josh correctly remembered that the title is one syllable). A particularly interesting "war" episode of "The Twilight Zone" (although relatively little of it is set in a war zone) is "In Praise of Pip," the Vietnam War episode the show did in 1963, astonishingly early for such a storyline.

A few suggestions.. watch THE DEVIL'S RAIN (stars William Shatner, and John Travolta, is in his first film role.) THE OMEN (Richard Donner's first feature film. DUEL (directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Richard Matheson.

For the war episodes try The Purple Testament and A Quality Of Mercy with Leonard Nimoy

Mike Rogers

Shatner has a prolific career before Star Trek - i was not aware of this until recently, but he was great! he did many appearances in many shows in the 50's and 60's and all of them good. sometimes the show he was in was bad, but Shatner was consistently good

jan

And James Doohan in Season 4, Episode 3 "Valley of the Shadow"

You know, I have no idea why I never connected with Twilight Zone. I watched most of it, but I've just never cared to go back and watch it again. It was acted very well, it had good stories, but just something didn't connect with me. *shrug* It happens.

wildhunt1973

Interesting! Was it because there was too much supernatural or that it was too dark? Just curious.

Richard Matheson, the writer of this episode, also wrote the Star Trek TOS episode, The Enemy Within.

1960 was an election year. Dwight Eisenhower was president and John F. Kennedy won the election in November, sworn in in January 1961.

I just saw Shatner earlier this week on a 1966 Gunsmoke episode. He played a bad guy with a mustache. I was wondering how he managed to do that and appear as a star in the 1st season of Star Trek. I wonder if he had some kind of contract obligation to do it and they filmed it around the time ST was filming The Menagerie or Galileo 7.

If you think William Shatner being in the twilight zone was a shocker, Leonard Nimoy was also in an episode of season 3 called “a quality of mercy” although he only had a minor role in the episode. Season 5 “The Encounter” features an episode with George Takei. Might be worth checking out since these are shorter episodes.

Hidden Ruu

Wonderful, unannounced surprise, guys. This episode has always been overshadowed by "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet," so it's great to see you reacting to both.

Shatner went bald when he was a child, at like 9 or 12 years old. He has worn a wig practically his entire life.

Aramis Calcutt

No, it was A Stitch in Crime. Sorry.

James H

Oh, yeah. I think Nimoy’s episode was called A Stitch in Time.

Walter Koenig has a small role in one of those two Shatner guest starring episodes. Plus Nimoy also featured in another, playing one of the few villains to drive Columbo to genuine anger.

Numinous2019

I was never a fan of the Twilight Zone. Don't know why. Just never connected with it, I guess. But I did always enjoy this episode.

wildhunt1973

Both his eps were great

I thought you guys were doing The Acolyte for July?

Steven Johnson

I never knew Shatner was in this one. I only knew the, now iconic, "Nightmare at 20,000 feet". I grew up watching the 80s run of Twilight Zone episodes religiously, and it's made me into the semi-stable person I am today.

You know, it’s been suggested in the past that you might watch an episode of Columbo to see what you think of it. If you ever do that, you might consider the two episodes with William Shatner… Fade in to Murder (season 6 episode 1) and Butterfly in Shades of Grey (season 10 episode 8).
