PATREON EXCLUSIVE UNCUT REACTION - Tombstone (1993)

Comments

I like this movie more each time I revisit it.

Sure, watching Clint Eastwood portray a human character, with all their faults, is a highlight of Unforgivien. That actually applies to all the characters from that movie. But, Alex & Josh aren’t going to watch them. We’d just have to hope they can appreciate a movie that doesn’t have any traditional heroes, and everyone operates in the perpetual grey area.

startrekiborg

i'd probably watch of few of Clint's classic westerns before that one. Clint's role in Unforgiven is a bit of a pay off to those who know his filmography.

apparently Wyatt walking into the river in a hail of gunfire to kill curly bill is historically accurate. Wyatt never took a bullet in his career as a lawman which is astounding and unheard of given all the action he saw. the script was for a 3 hours long run time and spent a lot more time flushing out the Cowboys, but this movie was apparently a complete shit show to make with a revolving door of directors and they had to cut a whole bunch of stuff out of the script. some of the cowboy roles got abbreviated down to the lowest common denominator. The script was written by Kevin Jarre who is known for writing epic historical movies (Glory)

Finally watched it tonight. I can now say it's not one of my favorite movies. I've seen several westerns, and this was one of them. It was...OK, but I forgot almost every scene as soon as it was over. I might watch it again some day, but not any time soon. Glad you liked it, but I've seen several westerns that I liked a lot better, and at least a couple of them are in the lottery.

KatWithAttitude

Well, that’s kinda my point. Hey, my grandmother would’ve been aghast if I didn’t recognize Joan Crawford. I don’t see The Planet of the Apes on your list. I assume you’ve seen it. But, The Omega Man was. He wasn’t wearing a beard in that. lol FYI, you don’t need to add it to your to do list, but if you want to know why he’s the iconic actor he is, watch Ben Hur or The Ten Commandments. They’re usually on the list of the 100 greatest movies of all time. The were both the Gladiator of there day.

If he was in rags, had a full beard, and was yelling about apes, I would’ve recognized him! - Alex

Knowing how you guys like good characters, in a good story, if you're going to do another western, do "Unforgiven". It won best picture for a reason.

startrekiborg

Lol. You guys are definitely a sign of your times. You mention actor after actor, and then an iconic actor like Charlton Heston comes on the screen, and not one peep.

startrekiborg

Classic Western, one of the best, hope you guys do a youtube cut soon

Oh about to start it..we have waited so long..

Badger

I'll pass on this one guys. I've seen this movie twice and was not impressed either time. I don't know why it's so highly rated. It does not even come close to the best 20 westerns of all time.

Got home from work- check. Tombstone movie for my first time- check. Tombstone pizza read to go - check!! https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WxhdIowTMb_VJAdXA86TEt0UafIvhm1p/view?usp=drivesdk

Given your reactions, I think seeing Tombstone for your first Wyatt Earp film was a better choice than Kevin Costner's Wyatt Earp (though I prefer Wyatt Earp because I found it to be more true to the real people and events). I visited Tombstone when I lived in Arizona: 1 big tourist trap today. I recommend the 2007 version of 3:10 to Yuma, a seldom mentioned but really good western. If you like blood squibs and slow motion, then you need to see The Wild Bunch, although it's a long one and there are several different cuts floating around out there. For Clint Eastwood westerns, my favorite is High Plains Drifter, though the Leone Italian westerns are truly classics (A Few Dollars More is my favorite of those).

Collin Freeman

Nice!

I kind of lucked out even though I couldn't find my Dad's copy anywhere. This afternoon I went to Walmart for a different reason and went by the $5 movie bin, and guess which movie was right on top? If I don't watch it tonight I'll do it tomorrow night.

Here's how Biehn tells it https://youtu.be/tLUM5tQHeDA?si=XSL8bWgWk88tSsEy

There's a few good sources on this, but this is a pretty good one: https://ew.com/movies/2017/08/13/val-kilmer-kurt-russell-tombstone/

Seems suspect to wait for him to die…. Could anyone else confirm Russell’s claim? 😆

Josh (Target Audience)

This is one of my favorite restaurants Kurt Russell at his best. To me it's a masterpiece.

Jason Mitchell

Tombstone was secretly directed by Kurt Russell because he didn't want to helm it. George P. Cosmatos was the "official" director, but Kurt Russell went to his room every night and gave him the shot by shot to be directed the next day. He only revealed that he was a true Director after Cosmatos died in 2005.

The downloadable reactions are only for TNG right now.

Great watch guys. This is another uncut that I'll rewatch again sometime. They've both got great filmographies but this one movie has, in my opinion, the best Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer performances. Dozens of iconic quotable lines. I personally don't think a chronological approach to westerns is the way to go for Josh at least. The accessibility of something a bit more modern was the way to go. Hopefully we can get to some more later.

James Bottas

P.S. My copy on Amazon kept losing sync with yours, and I had to restart like 5 damn times because the window-in-window kept freezing. (I would have just downloaded the reaction, but it wasn't available... I guess I could have waited, huh?)

Steven Johnson

There's "tension speed" which is what I call slow motion used to depict a human's heightened sense of something bad about to happen. I know it does that at least once in the first John Wick.

Steven Johnson

It's interesting, you can actually look up the historical archives of Tombstone and see a couple of different news papers that wrote about the events of the OK Corral. The Earp's were not as popular as the western myth has made them seem. There were quite a few people who felt they overreached their authority and provoked a confrontation intentionally. On the other side, the gangs of the time were also out of control, and there was a lot of corruption, just like today. I find a lot of the questions early on from Josh amusing. Not because they're not valid questions, they are. They are a lot of the same questions I had when I first got into westerns. Things like how are things arranged... Well, by this time there was telegraph. There was still mail (delivered across great distances by train and horse and buggy.) Western Union and Wells Fargo, at this time, actually employed guns to ride on the wagons with a shotgun... Which is where the term "riding shotgun" and "coach gun" comes from. There are historical black powder shotguns from the era that are stamped "Wells Fargo." Honestly, I think the more westerns you guys watch, the more you'll come to love it. Moreso Josh, I know there was some hesitance, but the truth is that westerns are good and bad just like any other genre. There are some of my personal choices: High Plains Drifter The Outlaw Josey Wales (One of my personal favorites.) The Searchers Hang Em High Pale Rider Unforgiven (Also another one of my favorites, but I would wait on this one at least until you've done some Eastwood westerns.) There is another one that I would actually suggest if you'd like to try another "modern" western. The Quick and The Dead. It's a Sam Raimi western, with his signature style all over. Also, with another absolutely stacked cast. There's also, of course "The Dance With Wolves" which is one of those classic frontier/western movies of the early 90s, and I know how much you guys love a 3 hour movie. Val Kilmer absolutely nailes his role in this as Doc Holiday. When you read about Doc and see some of the old photographs... Yeah. Val is Doc in the same way that Heath Ledger is The Joker, or Brandon Lee is The Crow. He just got it.

Steven Johnson

One of the best things about this film HAS to be the amazing 19th century slang they used, authentic to boot

JUSTICE IS SERVED

JD Nevesytrof

Slow motion? Not that I remember actually. Gun-fu? Absolutely yes.

Ca$hWednesday

Jerry Goldsmith was hired to score this, but had to move on to another movie. He recommended Bruce Broughton as his replacement. Exact same thing happened on 'Lost In Space'. Broughton scored 'Silverado' too.

Numinous2019

Is there slow motion in John Wick?

Josh (Target Audience)

Matrix and John Wick all any other "gun-fu" movies were heavily influenced by him. I'm sure if you've seen those, you kind of have an idea.

Ca$hWednesday

Theatrical I beleieve

Josh (Target Audience)

I’ve never seen a John Woo film but I’ve heard about his style lol. Maybe your movie will change my mind about it

Josh (Target Audience)

I'm happy you guys finally got to watch this one. Tombstone was my introduction to the Western genre when I was a kid, so it's kind of cool that this is the first western you guys got to watch together on the channel. I was sweating when you kept mentioning the dislike for slow motion in movies. Meanwhile my Patreon movie pick is a John Woo movie lol

Ca$hWednesday

We've been buggin you guys for this one since Spectre of the Gun 😁 Just woke up and barely have both eyes open but I'm getting my watch on right now. Soon as my coffee is ready

James Bottas

Friday just got better, and I'm bringing hell with me...

MrDeadstu

if I can find my Dad's copy I'll watch it late tonight. If I can't find it I probably won't, but we'll see. I'm not going to go with another streaming service, not even as a free trial. Our local library doesn't have it. I can request it but it'll take a few days to get it. We'll see. While I'm searching, can I assume this is the theatrical version and not the Director's Cut?
