TODAY IS THE DAY!

TODAY IS THE DAY!

Comments

They say that the difference between TV shows and movies is that movies concentrate on one of the most important events in a character's life. Many people and I argue that this is the case for a Star Trek character in TMP.

Mike Rogers

I'm getting goosebumps

MrDeadstu

I'll go with the under the North Wall, where Travis died early in the battle. Seems fitting! LOL!

Shane Davis

Do you mean under the Alamo itself or under the basement? 😄 As someone who lives in San Antonio, I can't help but wonder.

Rory OToole

Oh yeah, don't forget the opening overture before the movie begins

Rory OToole

In release order

Josh (Target Audience)

Does anyone know when this reaction is going to be posted?

Tom Occhipinti

Yes I have that, a couple buttons and my mom took the program they were selling to the post office and they backed machine by 1 day and stamped it with the day it came out.

Badger

One of the greatest musical scores ever, not just for Star Trek.

James H

That's a tricky one. They should run it live... but pre-recorded.

Tom Occhipinti

This comments section is like die-hard fans queuing up outside a cinema for days before the release of a new blockbuster. We're all hanging around waiting until your review video lands.

Numinous2019

Have you noticed that De Forrest Kelly is not singing along at the end and is standing with his arms folded across his chest. I wonder if there was bad feeling on the set that day?

Numinous2019

Dig them Klingons!!!

Rory OToole

Greatest American Hero!?!

Rory OToole

Do you have the little gold Captain's Delta pin they were selling back then? I still have one somewhere. I still remember waiting in line with my parents to see Amityville Horror (I believe it was Amityville) along with a group of people waiting to see STTMP. I bought my pin that night and then went and saw it on my own when Christmas vacation began.

Rory OToole

It will be a few days before it’s posted, we just watched it.

Josh (Target Audience)

For Wrath of Khan make it a livestream event! That would be fun.

Ken R

Being older than the dirt under the Alamo and having been around for Trek since it was an original idea (something it hasn't done in about 20 years), I gotta say I really want you guys to like this film Like others, it has a few caveats... it is NOT the series, not even close. It doesn't have the pacing of a TV show... it is long and ponderous. Also, it has a rather... let's see, what's a good description..... detachment to it. With the TOS series, even very early episodes like "The Man Trap" you immediately get the connecting spark between Kirk & McCoy.... characters click fast. Strangely, in this film, even though they've already been doing it live & animated on TV for 13 years, their relationships at times seem... diffused. Yes, I get the entire Spock 'Kolinahr ' storyline is supposed to be leaning into that so Spock can 'come back' to the family at the end, but he really doesn't, not in that emotionally releasing "last joke with Spock on the bridge scene" way. It starts detached and clings to it a bit even at the end. Strangely, the wardrobe and production design color's blandness (those colors were the thing in the late 70's and very popular, it's why they picked them) inadvertently bolster the often tepid, non-sparking relationship connections. The good stuff? The visuals for 1979 were astounding...I saw it in the theater and was blown away...no more quivering nacelles from a store bought model kits, no more puppets with obvious strings as aliens, no more cardboard walls...this ship LOOKS like something NASA would build in 300 years... and the new Enterprise's reveal with Jerry Goldsmith's achingly beautiful score is transcendent. The look on Kirk's face when he sees her... everything in TOS about Kirk's love for the Enterprise blasts back in a second, you can almost hear his voice from "The Naked Time" here... "Never lose you....never." The music is simply sublime, epically boundless. And the cold opening with the Klingon battlecruisers is fantastic...sets up the 'new' Klingons as real badass warriors with new, highly detailed badass intimidating warcraft in once of cinema's best tracking shots, then sets up the *real* threat when the Klingons...well, I'll stop there. No spoilers. There *is* enough of the Big Three clicking to make you want more, it's not totally sterile of the series' friendship triad. McCoy bickers and throws barbs, Spock responds by being insultingly dismissive, Kirk commands but critically relies on both... the core is there. Go into it knowing it was directed by film legend Robert Wise, who knew nothing of Star Trek, but wanted to make an epic, overarching, philosophical sci-fi opera. I think he achieved it. Be patient, this is NOT a Jar Jar Abrams film, it is the slowest of boils. But in some strange way, without relying too heavily on Trek's past TV formula (besides possibly ripping off the story of "The Changeling"), it manages to capture the true spirit of Star Trek in a more grandiose way than ever seen before or since. Funnily enough, this is the only TOS film that is a true stand-alone story. The next five all connect either directly or indirectly, making them really a mostly continuous serial. Even the uni's are the same in films II - VI. TMP is the only one that looks this way, feels this way and really, is the only one that really captures an "Actual people in space on a plausible, working space craft" feel. I've never compared ST:TMP to the rest of the film series, it doesn't fit to do so, nor is it fair. It was the first attempt and the other did (or should have) easily been able to fix the flaws from the first outing. TMP is its own thing, in its own category, almost existing in its own universe apart from the follow up films. Judge as you will, but I've always considered t to be a wonderfully ambitious, recklessly expensive, epically aspirational one-off of the Star Trek universe. Nothing will ever look or feel like this film does, ever again.

Shane Davis

WTH guys? It's been 13h since you teased us! With my luck you're gonna put it up when I'm at work tomorrow and I'm gonna have wait ALL DAY before I can get home. :P

Firekrys FWO

“Row, row, row your boat. . . “

Tom Occhipinti

Very glad you go the director's cut. I think it is so much better then the theatrical cut. Looking forward to your movie reactions.

Seirsan

I hope you enjoyed it!

Bret Kay

I definitely approve of the Director's Cut.

Tom Occhipinti

Hey, where is it?

Tom Occhipinti

Now I'm going to have to go get the new director's cut so I can sync this.

MntrTodd

I think the first thing you'll notice is that its long run time is only compounded by the snooze factor. However, that being said, I saw it in the theater when it first came out and I have to agree with others that the director's cut is the better version. As also mentioned, it has a very sterile, 2001: A Space Odyssey look and feel to it, but hopefully you'll still find some gems in it. The next few movies are more fun (and shorter).

Collin Freeman

I wouldn’t like to guess what year it will be before they get to Strange New Worlds 😂

Silk

Glad your watching the Directors cut

Scarpad’s Domain

I'll be very interested to see what you both make of the first film. You've gotten into the spirit of ST from the very start, while also taking the franchise seriously enough to make valid criticisms when you felt they were warranted. The first film is like a TV pilot. The following films retained the elements that were too expensive to change (models, special effects footage, sets, etc.), while revising the approach back to the more traditional ST formula.

Numinous2019

"Director's edition"? But that's not release order!

Jeff Cornell

I was wondering which version you were watching. I prefer the Director's Cut as it is a more finished movie

Retro Tom

My favorite ST movie, especially the director's edition. I love them all (with the exception of one of them which I'll let you discover on your own), but this one has an epic, grandiose and (especially) cinematic quality not as present in the subsequent films.

David Wayne Fox

YES!!!! Been waiting so long for you to get to the movies. I saw this in the theater and still have the little pins and program they sold out in the lobby. I know this one gets a bad rap but- that cinematography (though i could live without the split-diopter keep everyone in focus stuff), that flyby and the music..This one always holds a special place in my heart!!!

Badger

I've come to really love this movie. You're right. It's 2001-esque. The music and the cinematography are so beautiful.

danzthename

Yes!!!! So excited for the movies. And I can barely contain my anticipation of you starting Strange New Worlds. And Next Gen.

danzthename

Yes!! LLAP!

Tuomas Leone

I just watched it last week for the first time since I was younger.. and I loved it this time around! I can’t wait to see your reaction to it!

TalynStarburst

Watch this on the biggest screen you can!

Bradley Weston

This is the best version of this film to watch. I am not sure if you'll like it but I love the first movie.

Mike Rogers

This is not the best film but it has a unique style and is a visual masterpiece.

Jonathan

GAH! Now I can't wait to get home, and crank the sound system. Woohoo!!

Firekrys FWO

Not the best film in the series, but it had intellectual integrity. And a style all its own. It has more in common with 2001: A Space Odyssey in its tone, perhaps.... than with Star Wars. The shame of the movie, however, is that it abandoned some of the tone of the original series. Still, it stands, and I respect it well enough.

Tom Occhipinti

Watched episodes 21-22 on Monday

Josh (Target Audience)

This made me laugh out loud 😂

Josh (Target Audience)

I saw this in theaters when it came out. It may not be the best Star Trek film, but it was the first

deskmerc

When's the next Star Trek video coming out?

Steven Johnson

Thrusters ahead, Mr. Sulu.... Take us out.

Steven Johnson

II is one of the few films that brings tear to my eye

AzoriusMage

The Human Adventure is just beginning!! :)

Dale Gonyea

God the wait is killing me it has been minutes and you haven't posted the completed video :)

AzoriusMage

Shoulda done this one LIVE!!! It's a milestone!

Michael Nemo

Nice! I was wondering which version you were going to watch. The Director's edition of TMP is probably the best, though the Theatrical version is the original experience. For Star Trek II, I highly recommend the Theatrical version. It's a tighter edit than the Director's edition.

Bret Kay

My absolute favorite of all the films. Hands down the most cinematic. For me this film IS Star Trek and Roddenberry in it's rawest form. Perfect? No. But every shot is art.

Michael Nemo

There are a lot of cool aspects to this movie. It gets beaten up a lot but it's actually pretty good. P.S. Don't forget Battlestar.

Rory OToole

Just two things to remember: #1 watch it on the biggest screen possible with the best sound system and #2at precisely 0:56:42, make ready your bong, blunts, whatever. At 1:03:37, spark it up, and don’t stop till the end. Trust me, you’ll thank me later.

Rich Cirivilleri

WAAAAAAH! COOOLOL! I can’t wait!
