You guys caught on to the one thing that distincts this from all the other Original Star Trek TV shows and movies...no Kirk!!!! He's not even mentioned! Plus larry Niven is one of my favorite sci fi authors. He adapted this from one of his "Known Space" universe short stories, which is full of hundreds of stories and books. In the original story the 3 were a human male and his human wife, and an alien called a Puppeteer. The rest of the story is the same, Kzinti and all. It's a fantastic series of stories and books, including the most popular and famous book, "Ringworld" which also has a Kzinti character in it. Anyway, this is my favorite episode of the animated series.

2023-07-18 03:15:59 +0000 UTCI wish they'd brought the Kzinti back somehow, though live action cat prosthetics would have been expensive (and Paramount was less likely to pull in another creator's aliens once they were back into making ST in the 80s-90s). The closest we ever got to seeing a cat race on screen was the Wing Commander franchise of games and it's lackluster movie in 1998.

I guess he wrote the original story when he was about 28 or younger as it was first published in the February 1967. The animation director was partially color blind, but the colorist was apparently a bit of a rebel. The Kzinti ship and Kzinti spacesuits were not supposed to be pink. D. C. Fontana only learned of the error...when she watched this episode's broadcast. ... She immediately called Larry Niven and apologized to him. Apparently one of Larry Niven's best known humorous works is Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex, in which he uses real-world physics to underline the difficulties of Superman and a human woman...mating. The Kzinti are one of the minor races featured prominently in the old complex Star Trek ship combat board game Star Fleet Battles along with the Gorn, the Orions, and the Tholians.
