UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek TOS - Elaan of Troyius S3E13

Comments

TOS Sex Scoreboard Elaan of Troyius bah… More like Elaan of Tiberius because the Dolman got KIRKED (and spanked) Kirk 11 new +1 Chekov 3 Spock 2 Bones 2 Extras: Hardcore Kirk gives and gets. You may say “when?” but I think a quickie happened right after the first kiss. Elaan almost states it talking about choosing Kirk and Kirk choosing her. We know what that means…. Oh yeah we do…. Yeah….That’s right. Humpy Dance time.

Prof Moff

This one was significantly better than I remembered. I guess when I was younger I just remember it as the episode with the spoiled, bratty woman Kirk hooks up with, but Elaan and Kirk's relationship was actually handled a lot better than I remembered in the second half.

Timothy Nikiforovs

Hmmmm... Someone was able to remove Spock's brain... How about removing Kirk's (Shatner's) ego? lol

MertzRocks

I like Beneath the Planet of the Apes the 3rd Escape from POA is silly at first but necessary in ultimate story ark but they barely had just learned of flight from Taylor's paper airplane. In the short amount of time they dragged his ship out of the ocean unnoticed. Learned how to use it and not be terrified of not only flight but spaceband time travel. Yeah right 😆 The first time I watched Beneath is a kid I had a migraine so each time Brent in in the ruins of New York I feel somewhat nauseous plus the doom and gloom of it was so well done no wonder it makes me feel sick each time I see it.

Brad Barter

There will surely be some debate on the merits of the 2nd PotA movie. Most seem to dislike it but I never had a problem with it.

MertzRocks

To address the Klingon part of your comment, the not-so-subtle changing to "heavy metal viking"-types was probably due to Ronald D. Moore's writing, which began in ST:TNG. Nearly all the Klingon stories have his mark on them. He later, of course, came to be the showrunner for the new Battlestar Galactica, for which he said he DIDN'T want any more "bumpy-headed aliens" so there aren't any aliens at all in that show, though the original 1970s BSG is rife with them.

MertzRocks

It wasn’t a double it was just stock footage they reused from a first season episode to save money

Scarpad’s Domain

That wasn't a movie, that was a very famous Twilight Zone episde and she wasn't in that.

People often comment on the seeing a substitute actor (extra) as you did for Chekov. This also occurs in action scenes. It is still done today but not as noticeable because they pick better doubles. They did not really worry in early films or shows due to the fact the viewers had no way to be sure of the double. When home entertainment units became popular viewers discovered 'rewind' and 'replay'. They were able to inspect the films/shows in greater detail. This pushed up the quality in many ways. If you look back on old movies, especially westerns or other genres that have fight scenes often, you can pause and replay and see the obvious stunt doubles. You can also see the clear miss of a fist during fist fights too. You should always judge classic media by the eras technology to create it. **Movie Trivia: Another substitute in the b/w film era was colors. Changing certain colors on set in b/w films gave a sense of a different color. Reds did not feel warm so a deep brown color used came across richer as red fabrics.

France Nuyen was also in The horror at 37,000 feet 1973 with William Shatner. A great movie you could review.

Definitely one of the better season 3 episodes, probably in my top 5 season 3 episodes. I give it a B+. The whole Klingon thing was to ratchet up the tension and give the predicament of Kirk being in love with Elaan a sense of urgency to resolve it. France Nuyen gives a great performance as 'the shrew', and Jay Robinson as Petri also did a very good job. Nerd fact: France Nuyen co-starred with William Shatner on Broadway in "The World of Suzie Wong" a few years prior to Star Trek.

This is one of the very rewatchable episodes for me. I like episodes in which the Enterprise is taking ambassadors from one place to another. There seems to be more attention to the characters and story. Journey to Babel is one of my favorites because of this. This episode could have been better with a few changes. Instead of cutting off Uhura twice, maybe have her showing the Elaan her quarters then she could have had more lines and reactions to the Elaan's being a brat. She could have been the one to tell Kirk about the tears also. Also maybe have Chekov find the Klingon ship and telling Spok about it instead of having Kirk back up on the bridge again. Chekov could have taken Spok's place at the science station while Spock was in the captain's chair. They could have had Sulu really showing off his piloting skills. That could have been a time he saved the Enterprise because he was able to dodge some of the attacks. They seemed to want to do something more with Scotty but it never completely panned out also. Good episode but some little things to include more of the B and C tier crew that will later play a larger role. Interesting that Spock and Bones definitely did not have huge roles in this episode compared to many others. They had their parts but they were sidelined some. They could have used that time for Chekov, Uhuru, and even Scotty instead of so much of Kirk.

While many things in the 60s were a little backwards, I think today is also not exactly great. Today media tends to deny human nature and our differences and the way men and women typically are. I think especially the 70s and 80s media treated men and women and their relationship and chemistry a lot more realistic and natural. It's not automatically a negative portrayal of a woman if a character has traits that are typical of most women, and that includes weaknesses, and the same for men. Todays entertainment often portrays people more like someone wishes they were like rather than what they actually ARE like. And women ARE attracted to a man that takes a more dominant role in the relationship, that's just the way it is, and if they do that willingly, then why would that portray the woman in a bad light. it's not like Kirk forced her into anything. I think today's entertainment needs to learn again to let people be people and that not everybody has to be invulnerable and completely self sufficient and all that. That's not what people are like, neither men nor women. So while SOME stuff from the 60s is a bit backwards, for the most part I enjoy watching their romance and normal sexual interactions a LOT more than in most stuff I see today.

Some info from Wikipedia: -This is the only "Written and Directed By" episode in Star Trek history. -This episode is also the last one with lighting by original cinematographer Jerry Finnerman and contains the final appearance of Mr. Leslie.

Helen of Troy from Greek mythology was a great beauty the most beautiful woman in the world and the cause of the Trojan war between Sparta and Troy. She was the queen of Sparta but kidnapped by Paris of Troy setting off a long war. So Elaan of Troyus is meant to sound like Helen of Troy.

Sherman Lin

This episode is fine but never a favorite. It has some concepts taken from the past, with women yearning to be tamed. I'll leave that for everyone to decide if that's true or not, but it's one I doubt would be approved in 2023 even though Shakespeare's play has been adapted in other mediums. I find the entirety of season three to be less than season one. The stories for the most part don't stand out like the earlier ones do. There are some good elements but the episode with the Horta, for example, is a good illustration of what's missing from this season. Also you can see the production has changed. The dramatic Shatner lighting is mostly gone, the green tunic is mostly missing, the use of the theme as atmosphere music is done. Just go back and watch the episode where Kirk is framed for jettisoning the pod and then this, and they are dramatically different in just two years. The next one is ok at best, if that, and most remembered for Batgirl guest starring and a certain code phrase every Trekkie knows by heart.

Alex remembering anything is a bonus ;)

A good episode with some good performances and an entertaining reaction from you guys. I think we have seen off the worst of season 3 though episode 20 is a pretty low point but your reaction will be good I suspect.

AzoriusMage

The director also gets the writing credit because Roddenberry wrote large parts of it but wasn’t allowed to. One of the conditions of the shows renewal was to try and appeal to women more since the focus groups said “women are scared of outer space because they prefer the comfort of home” (not sure how many women they actually asked it was the 60s). This is a writer and director who had worked on Star Trek previously last in The Enterprise Incident

Jonathan

Thank you so much for including that link, I've heard of this play but I had no idea that there was a clip available. What an honor to see it. Again, thank you!

Gary Leyh

OMG, thanks guys, that was a very fun reaction! It was so great when Josh got the crystals correct and when Alex recognized the Klingon ship! Although I've always loved this episode you made the re-watch a lot more entertaining. This is why I'm on Patreon. Awesome.

Gary Leyh

I enjoyed this one :) Glad you found another one for your top list Josh :)

Andreas Schmitt

"Yes! I can recognize ships. I'm becoming a full Trekkie" Yes, Alex. And it's fun to watch it happen :D

Andreas Schmitt

Great episode. There's behind-the-scenes footage of John Meredyth Lucas directing and the cast clowning around, especially Shatner. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMqp_1WCjY8

I loved watching with you guys 👏👏and good call on the crystals. I love when Kirk gets to display his diplomacy skills. Even though the typical love interest of the week was eventually involved, his leadership skills are on point. Great line about the logical women of Vulcan 😂 Also hilarious imposter Chekov 👏👏I never noticed that before 😂 oh wait but the best line was not in the episode “ antidote for my next ex “ 😂😂 epic 👏👏

France is French / Vietnamese.

Michael Nemo

I enjoyed this rewatch more than I remembered, but largely for the opposite reasons y'all did. By which I mean the Klingon ship threat added some excitement the episode needed in my opinion. But that may also be colored by the fact that there's a Next Generation episode that deals with a very similar premise of a treaty sealed with a marriage with a woman with a nearly-supernatural influence over men with one of the main cast becoming the target of that influence, and that Next Generation episode does focus mainly on that storyline rather than introducing a separate external threat (if I recall correctly). So it's entirely possible that I just don't appreciate the relationship storyline as much here because I compare it to the (imo) better-done version in TNG, so the Klingon threat gets more of my attention here.

Jeff Cornell

One of my absolute fave episodes of all time. Her crying while beaming gets me every time. I love this episode. With obvious connections to THE TAMING OF THE SHREW. Met France at a Con and she is super super super nice. Amazing woman.

Michael Nemo

Well he was eventually right and although he's been in other movies his 7 Trek movies will be the ones he is best remembered from above all else.

Brad Barter

Some consider the two season animated series to be the last two years of the 5 year mission.

Mark Chrisco

Shatner also turned down the tv role of Dr. Kildaire, filled by Richard Chamberlain, because he felt he was destined for a movie career.

Mark Chrisco

Since the Enterprise crew tends to eat coloured food cubes for the most part I think they tried to show how animalistic her culture was not just by how she and most likely all of her people ate but to show her tearing apart meat from bone as she ate and since she hates everything not of her world they most likely prepared food from her planet, but agreed adding green food coloring to chicken to appear alien just made it look bad overall. I also like how Uhura was upset about her quarters not being satisfactory and Elaan hopefully didn't break anything of hers that had sentimental or other value. The actress here I also know of from the final of the original Planet of the Apes movies. I am hoping we patreons eventually get to vote on watching the orginal 1960s and 1970s Planet of the Apes saga as all 5 of the movies are a continuous story ark.

Brad Barter

You know, it strikes me that, in all three seasons of TOS, the second-to-last episode would have made a better finale than the actual finale. "Operation Annihilate" was a perfectly good episode to end season 1, but its competition is "The City on the Edge of Forever". Season 2 could've ended with "Bread and Circuses" instead of the barely-actually-a-Star-Trek-episode "Assignment Earth". And for season 3, I don't hate "Turnabout Intruder", but "All Our Yesterdays" is a far better sendoff.

Jeff Cornell

Depends on the series in question. The Fugitive had a finale. MASH had a finale. My point wasn't that it specifically could have had an absolute "We're tying up story arcs" but if they had managed the five year run as Gene intended, it would have had closure. The Series is left open ended. And hey, everybody has different taste. Turnabout Intruder is the worst way the series could have ended. All Our Yesterdays would have been a far better send off for the show, in my view, at least it focused on all three principals and had some truly strong, non-campy interplay between the leads.

Steven Johnson

Thanks for sharing I had seen Shatner in Judgement At Nuremberg but this clip precedes that by a few years. People forget what an bright upcoming actor Shatner was before Star Trek. I think the collapse of the studio system prevented Bill from becoming a big movie star. He was perfect for the old star system

Sherman Lin

Now the ending I do like, on how they love each other but understand they have their duty. That part I like. There's just little things that bug me now as an adult, then when I was a kid

Firekrys FWO

I guess I am still too young

Josh (Target Audience)

With this one and Wink of an Eye it was interesting seeing him "forced" into the love interest rather than him seducing them

Josh (Target Audience)

Definitely one of my favorite episodes. I was too young as a child to get the Helen of Troy knock off in the title.

Sherman Lin

Ha ha good one

Sherman Lin

This is another odd one. A lot of Season 3, there are some I really like, some that I always skip when I rewatch it, and then there are those in the middle. I like this episode, but at the same time Kirk falling in love is a bit cliche at this point. When I first saw it as a kid, I really liked it. Now It's a nice rewatch but nothing compare to Enterprise Incident or Is there in Truth no beauty. Still enjoy watching it with you.

Firekrys FWO

Well, series finales weren’t a thing in the Sixties (except for The Fugitive). And I happen to love Turnabout Intruder.

James H

Kirk must’ve been talking over the exposition. We can relate.

Josh (Target Audience)

France Nuyen is French, but her father was either Vietnamese or Chinese. I think Kirk missed hearing the exposition about the tears because he was still talking to Uhura. The Elasian guard costumes were actually made out of plastic placemats. We'll see that stock shot of Sulu turning around a lot more. The guy next to him is definitely not Chekov, and the uniforms are the wrong fabric for the third season.

James H

Yeah 20 is rough though I look forward to their reaction.

AzoriusMage

One of my favorites of Season 3. Elaan is a fairly layered character. She starts out as, almost a sex object, then she's a brat, and then we get the reveal she's basically a trophy being passed off for this peace, and her bratty behavior is more likely a defense because she's being treated like a thing. Also, I'm a sucker for the Klingons. The original Klingons up through the first few season of TNG. After that they start to wear out their welcome (though I know a great many people who prefer their "heavy metal viking" tone seen through the later half of TNG and through DS9... I was never a big fan.) On the subject of space battles, Star Trek doesn't really do the action stuff particularly well, I think that's why Wrath of Khan is regarded so highly, because it does "action" so well, and by action I mean it does character-motivated-suspense with a dash of action. You can probably rack up all the action in Wrath of khan in about 5 total minutes of run time. Star Trek loses itself when it tries to be Star Wars. It's actually a rather fascinating trip to watch Wrath of Khan and then go watch Empire Strikes Back and compare what are often considered the "strongest" entries in their respective franchises. There are a few pretty solid ones left. Whom Gods Destroy was the inspiration for the ill-fated fanfilm grift known as "Star Trek Axanar" and Let that Be Your Last Battlefield is another highlight (in my book). Then there are some dogs like Lights of Zetar, Journey to Eden and Turnabout Intruder. Which, sadly, is the end of the Original Series, and not a good way to end at all. I had a friend many years ago who really enjoyed The Cloud Minders. I'll be curious to see that one again as I haven't watched it in years. You guys might give me a new appreciation for it. In a way I think its that bad ending with Turnabout that helped give Star Trek a lease on life. Had TOS ended with some kind of a proper "Okay the five years are over, we're going home now" finale it never likely would have come back.

Steven Johnson

From October 1958-January 1960, Shatner and Nuyen performed together on Broadway in the play The World of Suzie Wong. Here is the only known clip from the play https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19BKU7m2PXQ

Jeffrey Lindenblatt

The last couple of episodes of the season 3 are all great in my opinion it's only episode 20 that I don't like.
