EARLY ACCESS - Plato's Stepchildren: Hidden Gem or Quirky Misfire? (S3E10)

I really hated this episode and I was watching Star Trek when it was first broadcast. My dad liked the show. But this one....yeah Shatner forced to whinny like a horse was truly cringeworthy. The only historic aspect was when he kissed Nichelle Nichols. Allegedly they would not show this episode in the South. BTW, Michael Dunn also played a recurring villain called Doctor Loveless on the Wild Wild West around this time IIRC

Not only a quirky misfire, I put this one at the very bottom of the list. I find it to be embarrasingly bad, and although I've seen it several times in the past, it's on my "never watch again" list. The original series only has a handful of bad episodes, but this is one of them. Shatner acting like a horse may be the single worst scene in the entire series. Fortunately, things take a turn for the better in the next few episodes.

For me this episode is just all around cringy and uncomfortable. I have said in the past that even the worst episodes have some redeeming quality, although sometimes you have to dig pretty deep to find it. For me this episode's not-quite-hidden redeeming quality, other than the groundbreaking kiss, is Alexander. Everything else for me is...not very good. I don't watch this one unless I'm doing a complete rewatch.

Come on Alex! You don’t know anything about Greece? Really? Dude, Greece is the Word!🤣

I honestly didn’t even consider cable tv dramas when making this comment lol

Barbara Babcock who played Philana also played Mea 3 in the first season episode "A Taste of Armageddon", Trelane's mother voice, Loskene's voice from "The Tholian Web", the Beta 5 computer and apparently Isis' voices in "Assignment: Earth", and one more voice role yet to come in Season 3. She's still alive at age 86, but sadly she was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease almost 20 years ago. She was probably most famous for her role on Hill Street Blues. One of her last roles was apparently as Clint Eastwood's wife in the movie Space Cowboys. Interestingly, she grew up in Tokyo and learned to speak Japanese before English.

Some police dramas are still episodic. They might have a subplot that runs throughout a season (or seasons), but week to week they are mostly episodic,

I've always been in the camp of "quirky misfire." There's something in every ST episode to like, but overall I've never been fond of this.

I love how you both can look beyond a little silliness and appreciate the themes and importance of the relationships/characters

The wife was hilarious . Vanity even after millennial aging “that old!? I stopped aging at 30”

Hidden gem or quirky misfire? Unwatchable abomination, IMHO.

I loved Spock's "35" year old insult, from a time when young people were told not to trust anyone over 30.
