UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek The Original Series - Day of the Dove S3E7

Comments

It's not one of the best of the series, but I do like this episode. It's entertaining certainly with all the sword fighting, and pretty much every trek series has those episodes where some or all of the crew becomes unhinged, which is always fun if only to let the actors have something different to do. That said I didn't grasp as a kid how disturbing the scene between Chekov anjd Mara was. Also the cooperation between Kirk and Kang at the end was an early precursor to the eventual friendship between the klingons and starfleet in the next gen era. One thing that always makes me laugh though is Kirk's monologue at the end. "In the heart, in the head, I won't stay dead", "and it goes on and on, good old game of war, pawn against pawn". I don't know if it was intentional to make it rhyme like that, but it just kind of sounds like Kirk is trying to start a rap battle with Kang😂

Thank you for mentioning Ansara's memorable role in Babylon 5. I still haven't seen any of his 60s and 70s TV work yet. Still, just based on this and his B5 appearance, it was obvious he was a talented actor. A & J, Babylon 5 has an over-arcing story over 5 seasons (seasons 2-4 being the core of the arc) but there are many "one-offs" as well, somewhat Trek-like. There is a mix of great writing with sub-par writing, just like Trek, and the acting is a bit all over the map (from true dreck to STELLAR) but it's still a great show.

Future Klingons aren’t nearly as shiny, but aside from the knobbed foreheads and long hair, they still have these eyebrows and beards and the darkened skin. You’ll even see that gold sash again. 😉

If you liked Kang the Klingon, and Koloth (Trouble With Tribbles) and Kor (Errand of Mercy), you'll enjoy the fact they all reappear 26 years later in a Deep Space Nine episode 'Blood Oath'....it was great seeing them come back! Hope you guys do DS9!

Your feelings were on point. I didn’t like this episode in first watch and it only got me to rewatch once we saw Kang again and I realized the female Klingon was one of the stars of Dallas that was a favorite show of mine growing up.

Thanks Gary!

OMG, thanks for a super fun reaction! I laughed a lot with you guys on this one. When I was growing up my best friend always referred to this as the one with the "greasy" Klingons...I forgot how distracting the make up was. You made so many great observations in this one, just a lot of fun. Thank you!

I like this episode more than the last one (Spectre of a Gun). I am not so keen on most episodes in which they have a theme like Nazi, cowboy or something like that. But it is not one of my favorites. I think if they would not have showed the alien until almost the very end it would have been more effective. The scenes showing the aliens slowed down the episode also. Oh you had the same idea about the alien.

The actor playing Kang is Mike Ansara - considered a very good actor like Richardo Montoban who played Kahn. Notice these sterotypical names - you can tell they are going to be bad guys. On a different note Anasara was married to Barbara Eden of "I Dream of Jeanie". This was another hit show(like Batman) on at the same time as Star Trek. These shows were big time successes compared to Star Trek. I really think you guys should consider watching an episode of these shows to see what Star Trek was competing against. I would love to hear that commentary... I keep seeing that Batman movie behind you Josh.

I only saw "Day of the Dove" for the first time very recently. I even asked my brother if he remembered seeing it when we were kids, and he didn't. My guess is that the attempted rape scene with Chekov was too much for central Texas television in the 70s and early 80s. So yeah, it was pretty trippy to find a "brand new" episode of Star Trek.

On a separate note, your viewing in release order is literally going to have you watching TNG and DS9, and then DS9 and Voyager, all in the same week for a while. The shows had overlapping airdates. TNG ran from '87 to '94, DS9 from '93 to '99 and Voyager from '95 to 2001.

Kang was 60's TV bad-guy staple, Michael Ansara. Westerns and cop shows were his meat and potatoes. He reprised his role 28 YEARS later in the Deep Space Nine season 2 episode 19 "Blood Oath". In fact, all three major Classic Klingons were in that episode. William Campbell reprised his role as Koloth from The Trouble With Tribbles and John Colicos as Kor from Errand of Mercy. Three old warriors, teaming up for one final adventure along with DS9 crewmember Jadzia Dax, played by Terry Farrell. I can't wait until you get there. I grew up with classic Trek. I LOVE classic Trek with every fiber of my being, but I believe DS9 to be the overall best series in the franchise. [Strange New Worlds may end up being a contender. We will see.]

I enjoy this episode, and love Bones and his rant. Swords are fun, it is a nice change of pace I feel. It's one I have rewatched many times. Michael Ansara has a great voice for a villain, his wife here went on to star on Dallas. This is one of my favorites from season 3.

Ken R

The actor who played Kang as well as the actor who played Koloth in Trouble with Tribbles (as well as Trelane in Squire of Gothos) and the actor who played Kor in Erand of Mercy (as well as Count Baltar in the original Battlestar Galactica) will all make an appearance in the future together, but not in TOS or TNG. So a lot of Trek must be covered first but bare that in mind that you will see them once again.

Brad Barter

As I mentioned previously some new music cues were used in this episode when Kirk, Spock and the Klingon female first see the alien in the corridor. This music will be reused again of course as always but with some slight variations dependant on the episode it is in which also is as it was in the past 2 seasons.

Brad Barter

I was going to say as much. We will see him again as a future red shirt in Turnabout Intruder at least.

Brad Barter

David L. Ross, a frequent-flier redshirt.

James H

A couple killed redshirts returned. Eddie Paskey who played Leslie said the producers said don't worry and stay in the background for awhile until their death's were forgotten and they could return.

Mark Chrisco

The redshirt, Johnson was the one vaporized by Capt. Tracy in Omega Glory.

There was a "reveal" sort of that I didn't get until years later when it hit me that went along with the whole Chekov not having a brother thing. from the begining there actual was no out post at all. No one was killed because it didn't exist. That was why there was no bodies, no sign of damage at all. It was all just from the creature like the distress call to the Klingons. I completely agree with you takes on it. It was a always a below average ep. Not horrible but not one I think "cool this one".

Prof Moff

This is a great episode. Big melodrama, smart writing, large well-utilized cast, Roddenberry's philosophy (the thing that makes Star Trek Star Trek) in full display. If Frieberger was doing exposition dumps to make the show more accessible, I like having Shatner deliver them.

deconstructionist66

Michael Ansara played Kang, and he's a great character actor, did a TON of TV in the 60's and 70's. A lot of 3rd season episodes are weird and wild, for better or worse, that's season 3 Trek. Great reaction as always.

Chuck Rice

I think both of you had comments that were on point. Josh: nice summation of how I feel about the episode. I think overall it's subpar; another "meh" episode overall. By this point in this series, I am getting sick of these all-powerful entities that just magically do whatever the story calls for. In watching it this time, I was wondering how all the actors felt about reacting to essentially either nothing or a red stage light. At this point in the series, I can only imagine Shatner and Nimoy must have thought this was definitely going to be their last season, and if not, they were hoping it would be. Kor, Koloth, now Kang. I wonder what "Kirk" means in Klingon?

Collin Freeman

On the make up for the Klingons. It was always basically black make up and facial hair.. They were supposed to evoke Asian Fu Manchu type villains. Which is a good thing in a way because those nuggets of ideas were evolved over the course of future Treks. I don't consider this spoilers exactly, but if you've seen "Worf" from TNG, the actor in the make up I mean, that was what Gene Roddenberry always wanted the Klingons to look like., Budget just wasn't on the shows side sometimes. Incidentally the torture device they use on Chekov is from Mirror, Mirror. A little bit of universe building through budget recycling. I do understand what you guys are talking about. And holding the reveal off would make more dramatic sense, but I do think it's a result of the era in which this episode was made, as you said. You have to think about commercial breaks and people who tune in "mid watch." That's why sometimes in older shows you get redundant exposition over an episode (Along with filling time.) Speaking of Batman, Michael Ansara (Kang) is Mr. Freeze in Batman The Animated Series. He also shows up in Babylon 5 as well in a really memorable role. I love the allusion Kirk makes to it "being around for awhile" and "caused a lot of suffering" IE: Maybe that thing is among us right now, metaphorically. Maybe all this conflict we see in the world, that never seems to make sense, is really the result of some manipulative "thing." In our case it would be a mixture of politicians, media, etc. Human nature.
