UNCUT REACTION - The Expanse S1E1 - Dulcinea

We finish pilot month with the first episode of The Expanse

This is the most recently released of the shows we have been recommended, and neither of us had ever heard of it before so we gave it a shot! It is available on Amazon prime.

This will hopefully be up on YouTube Monday, so expect the edited reaction on Sunday!

Thank you for being a Patron & enjoy!

UNCUT REACTION - The Expanse S1E1 - Dulcinea

Comments

Probably no one will read this comment so many months later, but I've watched this episode ("Dulcinea") about 4 times now, both with and without your reaction, and I really like it but still haven't watched any more episodes (and know virtually nothing about the rest of the series). I can believe that the series becomes more engrossing as it goes on, but also this episode itself improves with repeated viewings when you know where it's going. It's very much in a modern graphic novel mode of storytelling, where there are multiple layers, and the viewer has to follow everything without straightforward exposition. I'm especially impressed by the way the episode tricks the first-time viewer about where it's going. Shohreh Aghdashloo's character seems so nice in the scene with her grandson, and, when she's called away, we're convinced that she's off to help ameliorate the interplanetary situation with peaceful diplomacy; then the tone of her voiceover bridging the scenes darkens, leading to the revelation that she's a torturer. More spectacularly, of course, the episode ends by killing off the majority of what we thought was going to be the show's regular cast, and I agree with you that the cliffhanger ending is the most effective part of the episode, especially given its interpersonal implications for the characters (Holden knows he is to some extent responsible for the Cant's destruction, but none of the other survivors except Naomi knows). There is only one Prime Video show of which I've watched an entire season. I don't want to name it because I don't want to put you off possibly reacting to it at some point. I enjoyed much of it, I care passionately about its source material, and I would recommend it to anyone on that basis. The fact remains, however, that it is very slow-moving, and, although many exciting things happen across the eight episodes of Season 1, the big-picture knowledge I have from the source material makes clear that the only *really* important event of the season happens in the last few minutes of Episode 8! I'm hoping that you continue watching "The Expanse" at some point so I can watch along with you (unspoiled, unlike the Star Trek shows).

Love this series and so delighted to read you are going to watch more.

This is a space noir opera. Not a space action show like Firefly, nor a space drama like Star Trek. You guys missed a lot of dialog that sets things up so it will be a hard sell going forward. Especially since it's already a slow-burn being a noir style. It has to be taken in it's own category and context to get the feel of the show. With minimal influence of other shows we might think is better in the moment. Bad idea to watch this side by side with another space sci-fi. When they in fact fall short compared to the depth The Expanse goes into. But it's not for everyone for that reason alone.

Hahaha damn!

you asked for someone to answer about did the guy get a new medal arm or grow another one. I can answer that without a spoiler. He was on the Canturbury (the ship that blew up). He definitely got metal arm but lost his other arm, his legs, and his head too. So that contract with the company is going to be tested I think lol

If it is supposed to be a real bird then yeah the CGI looked pretty bad imo

* The first season is a definitely a slow burn. Season 1 does a lot of world building -- esp. in the first 3 episodes. I recommend sticking with it until the end of episode 4. * The Expanse was on SyFy for S1-S3 when it was cancelled. Amazon picked it up shortly after it was the cancellation was final. (S3 was written as if it was actually the end of the show.) * Amazon produced S4-S6. * If you're not hooked by the end of 1x4, maybe it's not for you. But, I recommend sticking with it until then. * I also was *not* hooked by the 1st episode. In fact, I put the show on the back burner and didn't come back to it until months later. I finally gave it another try, and it wasn't until 1x4 that I was hooked. * Battlestar Galactica (2004 reboot) starts with a much bigger bang.

Yeah, it's a fully serialized show based on a series of novels, so this first episode is almost entirely devoted to introducing the world, with very little plot movement. It picks up over the next few episodes. And did the CGI bird itself actually look bad, or just the way it was flying? Because the fact that its flying looked weird was very much intentional, because Ceres station has low gravity.

I had to slog my way through the entire 1st season and almost all of the2nd season, but after that, the show definitely picks up and gets better. It reminded me somewhat of Firefly kicked up by several notches. The last couple seasons were a little bit lackluster and less satisfying but still decent.

The first ep is slow and the first two ep aired just 1 day apart meant to be watched together, originally on SyFy, hence the ad breaks, amazon picked it up after season 3. One of the best modern scifi shows in my opinion. People will usually say the show picks up after 3-4 episodes. It's also based on a pretty popular series of books.
